Coheed and Cambria have found their drum riser vacant after Chris Pennie has announced that he is leaving the band. According to Noisecreep, the former backbeat provider for Dillinger Escape Plan has left the group to focus on his Production Company, Flight Mannequins, as well as Return To Earth, a metal band featuring vocalist Ron Scalzo and guitarist Brett Aveni.
Pennie has issued the following statement regarding his decision:
"I am very thankful for the years that I shared the stage with the guys and want to thank the amazing, supportive fans that I've met while on tour, but there are a lot of exciting projects on the horizon, in addition to Return to Earth and Fight Mannequins, that I feel require my absolute 100 percent commitment and attention. I feel that this is the right time to make that happen."
Pennie’s departure is the second line-up shake-up that Coheed has suffered in recent months. The band and former bassist Michael Todd mutually agreed to part ways in August, after Todd was put into custody on charges of armed robbery in July. The bassist was reportedly attempting to steal prescription drugs from a Massachusetts pharmacy. Wes Styles acted as a temporary replacement for the band’s remaining 2011 tour dates.
Coheed, meanwhile, are set to begin work on their new album, sans Pennie and Todd. The record, which will act as a prequel to the band’s Armory Wars concept album series. Front man Claudio Sanchez offered the following statement on the as yet untitled disc at New York Comic Con earlier this year:
"We will be staying within the world of the Amory Wars and go further into the past. Fans should be excited who of the characters we have picked to follow in this prequel saga… I will say that it will hint & influence the pre-existing saga, and that it is all related."
He is probably in the crawl space.
