Corey Taylor Admits He Tried To Sing For Velvet Revolver

Slipknot singer Corey Taylor has finally confirmed rumors that he tried out for Velvet Revolver’s vacant lead singer slot, telling Altitude TV, "I had a meeting with those guys, we did some demos together, and it just didn’t work — for whatever reason."

Since Scott Weiland’s departure from Velvet Revolver in April 2008, everyone from Lenny Kravitz to Sebastian Bach to Chris Cornell to obscure Canadian singers have been rumored to be the permanent fill-in for VR, but Taylor is among the first to reveal that he actually tried out for the job.

"It was just really cool. It was one of those things where it’s like I could have got to jam with legends, man, in my opinion," Taylor said, adding that he’s still on good terms with the band. Slash had previously said in passing that Taylor had worked with VR, and while it seemed like Taylor might take over as lead vocalist, the band decided against it, Blabbermouth writes.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, even though Slash is currently hard at work at his own solo album, he’s still devoted to the singer search. "We (VR) know the right guy is out there somewhere," Slash wrote in a MySpace post in August 2009. "It’s possible somebody could turn up before I do my tour and we could start working on new material sooner than later, in a perfect world."

coulda been pretty cool...but i don't think i want to hear Corey Taylor with VR's sound...his voice works great for the alt. metal style and hard rock, but VR's style of hard rock still has a lot of the 80s/90s feel whereas i just can't see Corey Taylors deeper heavier voice fitting in that well. VR's sound needs someone with a high range i'd assume...i wish they'd just get the vocalist from the first Snakepit Album...that'd be amazing.

I love both sides. The band members in VR and Corey Taylor. I just don't think I can acually see them being together as one solid band. Their styles don't mesh very well. A one off jam would be awesome imo... just not a permanent band.

Duff does have a good voice, but he won't be singing for Velvet Revolver. There was a Guitar World interview where he said he can't play bass and sing lead vocals at the same time, hence why he plays rhythm guitar in Loaded.

I would've loved that. Unfortunately, I vaguely remember Hetfield stating in an interview that no-one from Metallica would do outside work or solo projects that could detract from Metallica overall. Something like that. But +1 for the idea

I actually think Chris Cornell would be a good choice...people can say his voice wouldn't fit, but isn't that exactly what was said about the whole Audioslave thing? that he wouldn't fit with the RATM sound? but that turned out to be amazing. Maybe VR and Cornell would be a great match, we just don't know it yet. None of us have really heard them together, have we?

I think It would be awesome to hear Corey with Velvet Revolver, I think alot of you are getting hung up on what you've already heard from him. He's extremely versatile, All of his bands are complete 180's from each other and his guest appearance on the Apocalyptica Track "I'm Not Jesus" is Phenomenal.

Why not do an album with all guest singers, kinda like Slash does sometimes? This way, the long hunt for a singer could still go on, but all the try-out demos wouldnt be wasted. A song or two with each singer would be great I think. But then again, it would be pretty hard to tour behind.

Total bollocks. Corey Taylor sings in almost exactly the same way in every band. He sings Corey Taylor tunes, about Corey Taylor things. His apocalyptica song sounded like it was stone sour.

actually they said they wanted there new record to be a lot heavier than vr's previous ones, so you never know

Walt Lafty from silvertide would probably fit in nicely. I've heard the rumors about Lenny Kravitz working with them and i think he'd be an amazing choice because of his funk influences. The rest of GNR with him as the singer would be huge... Bigger than the original GNR line-up. They'd probably sound like the Chilli Peppers on steroids, which would be rad!

it's ridiculous that axl and the rest of the band can't reconcile their differences. if these guys were to reunite and make a good album they'd be able to make a TON of cash. i would say at some point they will at least ATTEMPT a reunion due to the money it could bring in. it would be stupid not to.

im glad scotts back with stp but i liked him with velvet revolver too, they could be a really great band with the right singer. as long as it isnt someone really post-grungy cause then theyd sound exactly the same as every other rock band nowadays. they need someone distinctive like chris cornell or ocrey taylor

i think m.shadows from avenged sevenfold could be a sweet singer for VR! only problem is is that he is completely dedicated to a7x. he did contribute on slash's solo stuff so who knows. i don't know if he would suit them to well but he has a sweet voice and some kind of swagger to him.

Blah. There were two decent tracks on the first album. Izzy Stradlin was GNR, bottom line. Now, the funny part is, I noticed a distinct lack of memorable bass lines, or lead vocals from Duff...yet his "Loaded" albums for the most part kick ASS.

Velvet Revolver are a never-was that only served to prove that Slash had virtually nothing to do with the creative direction of GNR.

+1 on the defense of drugs lol. On Topic: VR just needs to stop IMO. It just seems so damn sluggish, and forced at this point. None of the singers I have heard that they have had try out would really fit into the band IMO. They need to find someone unheard of, someone new, not just scan the rock singer catalogs for an already known singer.

brent smith from shinedown would be the best choice realistically. i dont particularly care for the musical direction the band has gone in since their guitarist left before the last album was released. he's a classic rock n roll singer as well.
