Dimebag Murder Was Not Motivated By Pantera Breakup

The onstage slaying of Damageplan's Dimebag Darrell Abbott was not motivated by the break-up of the guitarist's former band Pantera, investigators have said, according to NME.com.

After months looking into the case and 287 eyewitness interviews, investigators have also ruled out the theory that the killing was over a public dispute between Dimebag and Pantera singer Phil Anselmo.

As reported by The Columbus Dispatch, who obtained a 627-page investigative file on the case, a document written by Detective William Gillette said: "There is no evidence leading detectives to believe Nathan Gale was communicating with Phil Anselmo or any other individual ... in an effort to hurt Dimebag Darrell Abbott."

Police searched Gale's apartment in the wake of the shooting and found no "computers or magazines or compact discs" connected with either Damageplan or Pantera, according to the documents. A Damageplan CD however, was found in the stereo in Gale's "Pontiac Gale Am" which he drove to the gig.

The eyewitness accounts reveal more about the events of the evening, before Niggemeyer intervened.

Damageplan's tour manager told police that he was shot first trying to prevent Gale from getting on to the stage, despite some witnesses claiming that the gunman produced the weapon and targeted Dimebag first.

The police documents state: "Mr. Paluska related he grabbed the guy and this individual turned around and shot him. After doing this, Paluska ran to the side of the stage, where someone helped him lie down and he watched as Dimebag Darrell Abbott... got shot by the shooter."

John Brooks, a stage technician, was another of the three people who survived being shot and told police that Gale made a beeline for Dimebag and shot him before turning on the group's head of security, Jeffrey 'Mayhem' Thompson, who was trying to help the guitarist. Thompson died from three gunshot wounds.

Brooks was later used as a hostage and shot three times during a struggle with Gale.

Gale reportedly pinned Brooks to the floor and the stage technician said that he could feel the gun pressed against head, while the attacker shouted "Don't move, don't move."

Travis Burnett, the third survivor told investigators that he climbed onto the stage and challenged Gale. After attempting to put Gale in a "wristlock", the gun was fired which nicked his left forearm. Burnett fled and said he immediately "heard three more gunshots that he believed were aimed at his head."

According to the reports, Gale scaled a wooden fence surrounding the venue's outdoor patio and his intrusion was encouraged by several gig-goers, who eventually helped the gunman sneak inside.

Gale walked past a security guard who attempted to prevent him getting into the club without a ticket.

Dimebag was one of my favorite guitarists. I like the way his solos simultaneously sounded totally orchestrated and like complete mayhem at the same time. No one sounded anything like him.

I really doubt that ANYONE heard him yell anything... the music would have been WAY too loud for even the nearest band member to really hear, let alone a witness/survivor/tech. To whoever it was that said those who didn't know Dime don't have the right to mourn: I take it you're not a fan. I've only been a Pantera fan for a few years now and as a guitar player, Dimebag has been my greatest inspiration. When I found out he died, I suddenly felt a sort of emptiness inside of me. I know it can't be compared to losing a family member, but it sure as hell felt like it. And where I was when all that went down, nobody new who Dimebag was. I was alone in my mourning. I wasn't even allowed to listen to music. All I could do was play my guitar and just break down in tears because the world had lost such an incredible person, an inspiration to so many. I've heard Damageplan, and honestly, I dislike them. I was so disappointed with the whole Nu-Metal flavor that was obvious with their record. I was hoping like hell that they would progress past that and back to true, ball-busting, in-your-f***ing face heavy metal. Now it won't happen. And it hurts like hell.

And I don't really feel like placing blame. You could say the security was way too lax, you could blame Gale's mother for buying the gun, or you could blame the people who helped the guy sneak in. But what's the point? Blaming won't bring Dime back, and it won't bring closure. On the other hand, I hope the police can get to the bottom of this. Because an explanation just might bring a little closure. And an explanation is sure as hell needed and deserved. The fans deserve it, especially those who witnessed the horror last December 8. Heavy Metal deserves it. But most of all, Vinnie, Dime's widow, and all of his other loved ones, they sure as hell deserve it.

As much as i respect there talent, they died at their own hands. Its a shame but they all had some part in there fate.

where as Dime, Lennon and Razzle were all murdered/Killed. I know its harsh, but that makes it harder to swallow that Dimes gone. If he'd have gone out from drugs or drinkning, it would be a shame but that would of been his choice.

i believe the reason for dimebags death was that the killer, Gale, was a satanist and/or white supremecist like phil anselmo which is one of the reasons pantera roke up and thhis killer was going to make it even for anselmo.
