UK based metal heroes Dragonforce have announced that their long search for a new vocalist is finally over. After entries from thousands of hopefuls across the globe, the shredmasters supreme welcome 23-year-old Marc Hudson to the band to fill the boots left by ZP Theart, who parted ways with the band in March of last year.
"I'm really excited about being a part of the Dragonforce family," says Marc. "It's always been my dream to dedicate my life to making music. I'm going to bring all the power and emotion I can to the songs, and help make the killer new record the fans have been waiting for!"
Born in Oxford England, Marc was picked from the thousands of applications via a number of impressive video auditions and live performances, which left the rest of the band in no doubt that they’d found their man. Since the age of 16, Marc has been building his vocal skills gigging with bands in the UK underground scene, developing a powerful style with influences which include Bruce Dickinson, Michael Kiske and Sebastian Bach.
Commented founding member and guitarist Herman Li: "After almost a year of searching around the globe, it's great to be able to finally tell our fans the good news. Marc's expressive and melodic vocals are sounding phenomenal on the new songs, adding another dimension to the DRAGONFORCE sound that I am sure all the fans will love."
The band has been working on a new album since early 2010, recording in various studios in California, London and the South of France. The follow-up to 2008's hugely successful "Ultra Beatdown" album will be highly anticipated, with top 10 and top 20 chart positions all over the world and a Grammy nomination in the United States setting the precedent. With Marc brought into the fold, the band is enjoying an injection of enthusiasm and hunger that sees Dragonforce prepared to return more focused and determined than ever before.
"Everyone in the band is extremely excited about how the new material is shaping up," continues Herman. "We haven't felt this kind of energy in the band for a long time. We can't wait to unleash the next Dragonforce album later this year."
The new album is expected to hit the shelves in September, with a full world tour to follow.
Cool.. Exciting how this works out.. Sounds like the sound hasnt changed so much since ZP Theart left.. But he sure has the skills, let's hope he's a great live singer, if so: they improved..

or maybe if the whole band could b great live lol sounds great on the albums though
I don't see where the hate for DragonForce comes from. I've never really sat down and listened to them besides Through the Fire and the Flames, but everytime I hear a clip or something from 'em I just think "Hmm not bad, pretty cool."
Do most people still hate them because they were on Guitar Hero? If so.. Stop being butthurt about it.
Hmm...still sounds exactly like they did 10 years ago. There's a TOTAL lack of innovation from this band, they just reinvent themselves again and again and again and it would have been nice to see something which didn't sound exactly like it has always sounded. :\ Uncool to me.

they are known for being terrible live so people think that their albums are not accurate showings of their skills
...I had REALLY hoped a change in singer might result in some better lyrics (yes, I know Totman writes them, but still). Oh well, the dude has a cool voice. Sounds more like a power-metal singer than ZP did.

Which isn't very accurate either. Most people think they are terrible live because they watched a Youtube clip of one bad performance.

Dragonforce are actually pretty brilliant live.
This. If you look around YouTube there is more video clips of good performances than bad from Dragonforce. Hell, one video I saw Herman Li doing the sweep tapping to the Valley of the Damned solo while jumping up and down and he nailed it pretty well. (Guy was jumping pretty high too)

I saw Dragonforce live and they aren't terrible, but they certainly aren't anything to write home about. If they stopped jumping around so much and making faces at the audience, maybe they'd actually be able to play proficiently. This new singer is boss. Maybe he'll motivate them to clean up their live chops.

I started likng them from GH actually... Not a fan now, all their songs have pretty much the exact same formula. It's one thing to have a style you stick too (I love Amon Amarth) but not every song in that style has to have the same sounding guitar riffs, the same long flashy solo, and the same lyrics. Plus they're just too cheesy for me to stomach for long stretches. I can listen to one or two songs from time to time but no way could I stand hearing a whole album all the way through. But that's just me, I hate power metal almost without exception.
Hmm...still sounds exactly like they did 10 years ago. There's a TOTAL lack of innovation from this band, they just reinvent themselves again and again and again and it would have been nice to see something which didn't sound exactly like it has always sounded. :\ Uncool to me.
They have a formula, it sells well, they enjoy the music they create...would you change your music?
i literally forgot about this band. I bought one album because they were the thing to talk about and i didnt like the album at all. The solos are wayyy to long and just generally not fun to listen to. I guess i just got out of this style of music they play. Hearing that they suck live doesnt keep me interested either .
I've seen Dragonforce live and yes they missed quite a few notes. But at least they have a definite stage presence to make up for that. I mean, Dillinger Escape Plan jump off 16 foot platforms and jump into the audience while playing and not missing a note, but whatever. On youtube it's definitely different. Live, you'll find it far easier to forgive them because they still try their damn best. I grew out of them because their music is repetitive. But I'll never bash them because of their talent, because like it or not, it is there.
This new singer is quite good.
Would still prefer ZP, but this guy was the only one I wanted to be in DragonForce from the auditions. So glad they picked him!
Can't wait to see all those who can't play DragonForce cry over this.
Dragonforce can't even play Dragonforce. they got the nickname studioforce for a reason
Like I said to someone else, at least they're better then you.
Doubt that. Anyone who can actually play a song accurately can play better than Dragonforce. Ever see them live? They hit maybe three correct notes per song.
I didn't even know their singer left. It would have been nice if they'd have taken that as a hint to just give up.
TheAbsentOne wrote:

It's essentially a band wagon pretty much.
I can't speak for everyone, but I find their music boring and trite. I was dragged to a Dragonforce show once by an ex and they were just... TERRIBLE live.

Don't cry. Keep practicing, you'll be able to play one of their songs soon
The reason they sucked live through the tours for their first two or three albums was a complete lack of crew or even monitors. They couldn't hear anything on stage. They're better now.
New singer sounds awesome, and if he actually shuts up during instrumental sections when they play live, it'll be incredible.

Yeah, they were
Get the point?
Anyway, this is great news. Always liked dragonforce
ive seen them live recently...end of 2009, and they were fantastic, not a single slip up as far as i could see..theyve really got their act together :P

In all honesty I think that limits bands/artists entirely too much. Something that I respect about a musician is versatility. My idea of a great band is a band that can change up their sound but still stay true to their style, and then it's even cooler to see a band play a style totally different to theirs. Dragonforce's formula is very generic and quite frankly boring. they'll never earn any real musician's respect by pumping out the same music with slight variations consistently, over and over again.
I saw Dragonforce live at Mayhem Fest in 2008...they weren't bad live, I don't know where alot of it comes from. You can't watch a video on youtube to decide.

What point? I said they were terrible live when I saw them because I saw them in the past. I can't possible say "I saw them live, they ARE terrible" because I'm not watching them live at the moment. Nice try.
Either way, just because they sound good live now doesn't mean they suddenly aren't a boring band. Because they still are. This new singer, sure he's got ...some... range but it is still the same boring, trite dragonforce formula.
Er.. most people hate them because they play mindless speed metal, or at least that's what I've always assumed. I can understand that there are people who like such stuff, and I'm fine with that, but... imo the music is pretty much just pure bull**** designed solely to show off, and nothing more. There's just nothing of any meaning to any of the songs (though I can't say I've listened to them all - haven't quite been willing to put myself through that - so I admit I have a bit of a bias here).
I await with to hear the different synonyms for "so far away" they have in this album, as well as cheesy soloing.
I'll give the guys credit, they are talented on their instruments. But the repetition these guys put out just doesn't make them appealing to me. I liked a few of their songs at one time, but it just got boring to me. If they change up their song writing, lyrics, and play better live (according to the comments), then maybe I'll pay attention to them again.
And this might not be true, but I heard they were terrible live because (in addition to other reasons), they didn't have in-ear monitors. Not sure if that's true or really contributes but there you go.
Just to add, this guy DOES have some serious singing chops but I want to hear how he pulls that off in a 2hour live set (his voice will probably be hurtng I think).
Cute how much Power Metal Kid is riding everyone who doesnt like this band.. "Dont be mad cuz u cant play their songs!" As already stated, Dragonforce cant even play their own songs.. and just because people dont like a band, it isnt because they cant play them.. Everyone hates nickelback and there isnt a difficult riff done throughout their career. People generally dont like bands when they can listen to one song and get the gist of every other song ever recorded by said band.
not even Bruce Dickinson singing could make this band worth listening to.

Come one. Look st 0:18-0:24, Fucking high shit right there.
I do like this band (and power metal in general) however I would like them to follow and the path they took on UB and keep expanding their sound, not just all shred all the time.

i like dragonforce's instrumentals but never really cared for the vocals, this guy sounds a little better than zp. not that zp is a bad singer, i just dont really care for his style.
Oh, and everyone saying Dragonforce played badly live because they didn't have in-ear monitors? Look at the Beatles. They didn't even have PAs. And still played in tune, on key and never missed a note or harmony because they played off Ringo.
These guys obviously need to l2metronome, regardless.
This vocalist seems a little more Maiden style which I can handle ALOT more than ZP. The vocals have always been the reason I never listened to these guys because they were so ridiculous. It's a shame because they actually write some sick stuff on occasion. Maybe if they had a Scar Symmetry vocalist style, it'd be better.
This guy isn't THAT great. I mean he's a very solid vocalist for sure, but out of thousands of applications I'm kind of surprised that this guy is the best...
All of their music is very similar in sound and structure, which is a shame. they would sound good playing something a bit heavier and gritty. Dforce just sounds to computerized and unnatural
Seriously guys. Dragonforce can play live. They used to be awful because of tech issues and monitoring problems, but since they started using new in-ear tech they've seriously improved. Saw them on the Ultra Beatdown tour, barely any notes dropped whatsoever, no slowing down needed. Only person who made mistakes was ZP, looks like this singer will be a bit stronger live.

How is it other bands have managed to play together for the last 40 years without this magical in ear technology? If you need tech to play/sound good, you are not good.

No, cause like, Dragonforce and the Beatles play the same kind of music right? One of them isn't much more technical and faster than the other or anything, right?
But anyways, it's cute the way people just jump on this DF hating bandwagon. I mean, they could be much better, but to say that they can't play their own songs live....
Well, then you clearly have never heard their live stuff before

WHAT?! YOU'RE TELLING ME THAT METAL ISN'T PLAYED ALONG WITH DRUMS FOR TIMING?!?!?!?!?
And back in the day, when they "*sniffcrai* didn't have any in-ear monitors", they really couldn't play their stuff accurately. Sure, they're good live now. But boring. Still.
Well I don't hate dragonforce, I just dont care for them. Never liked any of their songs but I'm hoping I like something from their new album. I recognize how talented they are and it's kinda frustrating that nothing they've done so far has appealed to me. I dunno its just that their style and lyrical content is just terrible imo. I don't want to feel like I'm in a mega-man boss level when I listen to a song lol
I don't think anything played by Dragonforce is hard to cover, but maybe a little hard to play the entire catalogue. In any case, hope the new singer is good and hope Herman Li plays faster than ever before (and maybe make the songs a bit more complicated, playing an entire riff on one string is a bit too easy. Even I can play the riffs only 2 years into playing guitar.)

Some people were dropped as a kid, you were apparently thrown at a ****ing wall.
Seriously, if you can't do a simple google search to find out about live audio technology and systems, then your ignorant rampaging here is less than irrelevant. Every single band that plays outside of club shows, has in ear monitoring. Everyone from Lady Gaga to Behemoth, from Taylor Swift to Devildriver. You have rear facing P.A systems for the vocalist, (they usually have in-ear as well) and the rest of the band have them, plus side mounted speakers so they can at least hear what they're playing.
I've seen Dragonforce 3 times, and never been let down. They're performers. So they perform. Who cares if you think Dream Theater are "better musicians", I'd rather watch people having fun than stood staring at the floor with no stage presence at all.

THANK YOU
I saw Dragonforce on their last north american tour with ZP, and they put on a good energetic performance, and they played all their stuff right.
Took 'em long enough to get a new singer though
Wait you guys are worried about how old he is???? WTF????
Either you're women or a bunch of Fagsssss!!!!
Who cares how he looks, its about the music remember MUSIC!
not models!
He sounds pretty good, but im not a fan of this band.
good luck to them.
To all the wannabe Metal Fans...GTFOOH! Music comes first not looks

The problem isn't that they gained a ton of exposure from Guitar Hero, it's that people say that all they do is mindlessly shred (sloppily live) and that the music is repetitive and boring. I, for one, think a new member may help turn that around a little bit, but I listen to them minimally anyways.

You REALLY missed the point considering a lot of bands from the 60s up until the late 80s didn't have in ear monitors.. even in stadiums.
Come on guys. Give them a break. Just because you don't like them doesn't make them bad musicians. Their writing what they want and crap if you like power metal as I do, they aren't that bad.

Compared to other power metal, they are bad. Eidolon ftw.
I'll admit, I'm not a big Dragonforce fan. But why all the hate guys? This guy has a good set of pipes. And yeah, the musicians aren't the best but there are worse ones out there. Just because we aren't fans doesn't mean we can't be happy for the band or epsecially this guy.
Not really a big fan of Dragonforce but Im keen to hear what they sound like with a new vocalist, the lineup changes that alter the bands sound the most is normally the vocalist or guitarist in some cases.
Someone up there already said this so I'm just gonna refresh it down here. Their songs tend to run together. The talent is there for sure, but it wouldn't hurt them at all to change it up a bit. This new guy is infinitely better than Zp though. I COULD NOT for the life of me stand his voice! I'll have to borrow the new album before I even attempt at buying it. All their albums put together back to back sound exactly the same.
:/

This. In full groove mid-tour, they are almost awe-inspiring. But hey, let's keep hating on a ten-year-old youtube video where they had no monitors. YEAH!

How much 250 bpm power metal was being played in the 60s and 70s again?

Their songs make me think of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Brings some good nostalgia there.. But they DO make a lot of similar sounding songs, and it gets to be repetitive. Regardless of my opinion though, I hope they find some success with this guy.
People listen to Dragonforce because of the vocalist?
That's funny, I thought they listened to it because of the guitarwork that sounds like it's been computer-harmonised like 5 times.
For the record, people hate on Dragonforce not because they were on Guitar Hero. People hate on Dragonforce because they are terrible live. Honestly, their keyboardist/keytarist was the best part of their whole set.

You REALLY missed the point considering a lot of bands from the 60s up until the late 80s didn't have in ear monitors.. even in stadiums.
How much 250 bpm power metal was being played in the 60s and 70s again?
How is that relevant? There were deaf musicians that could play in key and in time better than Dragonforce without their precious in-ear monitors. All music.... LAWLZPOWURMETULZ INCLUDED ... plays along with a metronome.. I.E. ....drums.
Don't cry. Keep practicing, you'll be able to play one of their songs soon
Wow dude how old are you? you're telling people who don't like your precious band that the only reason they dislike dragonforce is because they can't play any of the their songs?? umm since when did you have to be a musician to dislike a band?
by your logic everyone hates Justin Bieber because they can't play his songs right?
Don't get all the live bashing... they've massively improved, saw 'em touring the last album when I was still listening to this kind of thing, and as well as sounding decent, they actually put on an ENTERTAINING and FUN show, which is more than can be said for alot of bands
why change the vocalist? i always thought vocals were pretty much ok. the should change the, so called, "guitarists" of this band which are well known for not being able to play their own songs.
It's good that they are changing something, but if all the creative input is still exactly how it was then all they have done is added some blonde to their photoshoots.
I had the pleasure of seeing Dragonforce and being opened for by Turisas. I'd only seen DF at Download where the sound is bad enough from being open air and windy. I have to say in all honesty that Turisas blew them out of the water. They were more entertaining in costumes, instruments and general changes in sounds for their songs. Dragon force has 'that' power metal singer that 85% of the bands seem to have. And all guns pointed at speed so nothing 'that' clever is ever really put out. However that seems to be the hole they are digging so it's personal preference as the whether you like it. Just that it's earning them a bit of a reputation as a band for kids so they can laugh at their friends and their conventional rock/metal.
But, yeah. When Dragonforce played after Turisas they stuck the volume up to 12. It was completely deafening. People didnt seem that moved either. The trampoline antics were okay, but they had been seen before. It's like they are trying to press a funny button. They keytar sections were really good and using soundbytes from videogames made the whole thing a bit more fun, but they still weren't pulling the crowd. ZP got really angry at this and started being obnoxious. Even started throwing beer. Water is fine, but beer is sticky stuff when it dries, and it's not as though you get to drink what they throw at you unless it's in a bottle.
I was a big fan when Valley of the Damned first came out. But they were my first power metal band and I only had a few songs of theirs to compare. But as each album came out it was always the same sort of formula. I can't hate them as they ejoy what they do. It's other people rubbing them in my face for better or worse that I hate, but they threw themselves into the firing line.
I can't see this guy making much of a difference, but I will check out their new album. It will probably be their last chance to pull in any sizable amount of new fans before people decide that they can't change their formula and another nail gets added to the coffin.
