Dragonforce Split From Singer

British extreme epic power metallers Dragonforce have officially announced the departure of lead singer ZP Theart.

"It is with great regret that Dragonforce announce a parting of the ways with singer ZP Theart," the group writes in a statement. "This is due to insurmountable differences of musical opinion but the rest of the band sincerely wishes ZP great success with his future projects.

"While the creative core members have begun writing the fifth album, they have also started a worldwide search for a new vocalist."

"We are looking for a powerful, melodic singer to write a new chapter of Dragonforce with us," added guitarist Herman Li.

Anyone wishing to audition for the vacant position should apply by following the instructions at this location.

Dragonforce's latest album, 2008's "Ultra Beatdown", sold 24,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 18 on The Billboard 200 chart.

Dragonforce had its first two studio albums — "Valley Of The Damned" and "Sonic Firestorm" — reissued on February 22, 2010 via Spinefarm Records UK. Both titles were made available with updated packaging and bonus audio/DVD content, some of it exclusive to these releases.

I didn't really like his voice as much as other singers of similar styles, though.

I had no idea that people still cared about them. Li is NOT a good guitarist. His style is very annoying and probably the most unthoughtful music since I first heard screamo bands. I have not met a single person that likes Dragonforce and most likely never will. The other guitarist, from what I've seen, is drunk the whole time too. Their set as Ozzfest was terrible and so sloppy. I give the guy credit, Sam and Herman do most of the writing, so as far as ZP adding "fire, dragons, and dreams," I think he was probably the one who wanted to get more serious and out of the Fantasy genre. i laughed when i read that but then i decided to actually look it up, and Theart actually wrote some of their best lyrics. All the songs with those words in them were written by Totman or Herman.

What they really need is a good lead guitarist. Herman Li= sloppy, shit guitarist that speeds up his playing in the studio, and fails playing it live.

I am not a Dragonforce fan AT ALL, but it's always a shame to see a band member leave. People really need to stop hating on the band. They played a couple of infamous bad shows,(which Herman Li explained was the sound technicians fault BTW). They now sobered up and put on great shows.

I am not a Dragonforce fan AT ALL, but it's always a shame to see a band member leave. People really need to stop hating on the band. They played a couple of infamous bad shows,(which Herman Li explained was the sound technicians fault BTW). They now sobered up and put on great shows.

I have no reason to respect Dragonforce. First, the name alone makes it near impossible to take them seriously as musicians. Secondly, the music is all very similar sounding (i.e. AC/DC). Good songwriters don't have to rely on the same formula for every single song. And finally, their lyrics are very childish and cliche. I like DragonForce. I am aware that the mere thought of someone liking DF is bewildering to the haters, so allow me to qualify it. I accept that what they do is hardly pushing the envelope of power metal, and they are far from the greatest band on the planet. However, both the band and the fans are aware that DF's music isn't meant to be taken completely seriously, which is part of the reason that they have had such a lasting appeal. The haters, on the other hand, seem to be so obsessed with an empirical definition of "good music" that excludes DF at all costs, that they forget that "good" is entirely subjective and the definition of good music will vary from person to person, which is a ridiculous standpoint and denies any argument they make any ounce of credibility, displaying a considerable amount of disrespect to the opinions of others in the process.

glowinghamster4, I think you're the one who needs to give it up. Not everyone thinks they're great, not everyone think's their bad, everyone has their own views of music. I myslef listen to everything but rap, hip-hop, and country. anything that isn't in those, i'll listen to and give it a try. i listened to these guys, and thought that they were fairly good. the repetitiveness that everyone is referring too probably comes from the face that there are only 22 (or 24) frets on the guitar and there are only so many notes you can use. If you listen carefully and try to pick out each the notes, you can tell them apart. They definitely aren't even in my top 20 favorite bands, but they're ok.

Bottom line is, everyone has a different opinion on music, and I don't think everyone should be arguing about whether they suck or not, because everyone will think differently. Can EVERYONE just give up and stop being "fanboys" and "haters"? Just agree on the fact that this is the way they make their living, and apparently, it works for them. Get over it and move on.

GOOD:
- "Valley of the Damned" and "Sonic Firestorm" were great albums
- Regardless of how likeable their music is, they did something no other power metal band has done. (incorporating blastbeats, videogame guitars/keyboards)
- Sam Totman and Herman Li arent the best guitarists in the world, but theyve fashioned a distinctive style. Buckethead has done something similar too.
- ZP is a pretty good vocalist live. Ive actually seen him live on the Ultra Beatdown tour. Not perfect, but then again, no one is. Definately better than youtube videos though.
- Keyboardist is quite technical and entertaining live (playing simpsons medley, jumping up and down etc)
- Their new bassist is very good and probably the only likeable person in the band, except for the drummer who is also amazingly tight.
- No one else sounds like them. That is an achievement in itself, much more commendable than any popular core band. You can be as talented/technical as you want, but to gain popularity (what ANY musician wants, deep down) you've gotta have a distinctive sound (eg. nickelback, creed, acdc etc).

BAD:
- Lyrics are extremely cheesy. Then again, most power metal bands do. It's like telling Blind Guardian to stop talking about mordor.
- ZP is very arrogant live. He doesnt come off as a likeable guy. Also gets too drunk.
- Sam and Herman can pull of their guitar solos live, but favour wanky improvisation over staying true to the record.
- Sam and Herman are not guitar gods. Jumping on a whammy pedal 24/7 and churning out albums like Inhuman Rampage and Ultra Beatdown are proof of this.
- Sam Totman is also quite drunk live and therefore tends to be slightly sloppy.

End of it all. Dragonforce seem to be quite successful (finally.... from someone whos followed them since the original demo), they seem to be having the time of their lives.
Theres no point them trying to write a "clever/deep and meaningful" album because people dont already respect them - they might as well keep at what their doing.

- No one else sounds like them. That is an achievement in itself, much more commendable than any popular core band. You can be as talented/technical as you want, but to gain popularity (what ANY musician wants, deep down) you've gotta have a distinctive sound (eg. nickelback, creed, acdc etc).

BAD:
- Lyrics are extremely cheesy. Then again, most power metal bands do. It's like telling Blind Guardian to stop talking about mordor.
- ZP is very arrogant live. He doesnt come off as a likeable guy. Also gets too drunk.
- Sam and Herman can pull of their guitar solos live, but favour wanky improvisation over staying true to the record.
- Sam and Herman are not guitar gods. Jumping on a whammy pedal 24/7 and churning out albums like Inhuman Rampage and Ultra Beatdown are proof of this.
- Sam Totman is also quite drunk live and therefore tends to be slightly sloppy.

End of it all. Dragonforce seem to be quite successful (finally.... from someone whos followed them since the original demo), they seem to be having the time of their lives.
Theres no point them trying to write a "clever/deep and meaningful" album because people dont already respect them - they might as well keep at what their doing.

1. DF is not the only band who sings about that stuff. some bands do it way more than them, and that's what Power Metal is mainly about. just listen to Rhapsody of Fire, Hammerfall, or Blind Guardian.
2. They used 'dragons' in their lyrics literally TWICE.
3. With the release of Ultra Beatdown, their latest album, they admitted that they're eradicating all 'fantasy' related lyrics from their songs.
4. They used to suck live but now they're amazing. FACT. this disproves the whole 'studio editing' theory.

And speed up? last time I saw them they played their songs as fast or faster than the studio versions, Herman wasn't sloppy at all and he didn't have an ego.

i laughed when i read that but then i decided to actually look it up, and Theart actually wrote some of their best lyrics. All the songs with those words in them were written by Totman or Herman.

Was never a big fan of the band and the singer was the weakest link to me. They seem to play fast just to play fast. If you don't have anything interesting to say musically, doing it really fast doesn't make it better.

That said, it takes a ton of technique to get to the proficiency level of DF. Li and Totman are definitely gifted players. Just not my cup of over-caffeinated tea.

One could argue that pop is a better genre just because it has so many followers. I personally watched them at Download '07. They sucked ass guitar wise and were more bothered about landing on their little mini trampolines than landing a right note.
Despite better judgement I again watched them at Download '09. They were infact worse than last time with possibly the exact same setlist (can't actually tell they're that repetitive).

1. DF is not the only band who sings about that stuff. some bands do it way more than them, and that's what Power Metal is mainly about. just listen to Rhapsody of Fire, Hammerfall, or Blind Guardian.
2. They used 'dragons' in their lyrics literally TWICE.
3. With the release of Ultra Beatdown, their latest album, they admitted that they're eradicating all 'fantasy' related lyrics from their songs.
4. They used to suck live but now they're amazing. FACT. this disproves the whole 'studio editing' theory.
5. just because they sing (or used to sing, now) about fantasy, doesn't mean they're bad.
6. No one is making you listen to them.
7. No need to troll on this post, which clearly brings out bad news for us DF fans. It's not like you need to make it worse for us, and what exactly are you accomplishing anyway?
8. Dragonforce sounds like a nerdy name, sure, but there are bands with names like Fairyland, Wizards and Demons, and Power Quest.

btw, i liked dragonforce before the whole guitar hero thing, so i'm not one of those people. maybe you guys are just raging cuz u can't beat TTFAF on your shitty game? anyway, peace.

Your the only one..Saw them live at a couple of festivals and I just found myself trying to find an off switch for their gear....just a mash of noise..then again that's why it's called an opinion.
