Duff McKagan: The Last One Who Saw Kurt Cobain Alive

Velvet Revolver bassist Duff McKagan (ex-Guns N' Roses) has told Patrick MacDonald of The Seattle Times that the group are currently working on their sophomore album, writing songs to be recorded in the fall, reports Blabbermouth.net.

"It's great to be back in a band that means what they do and does not compromise," McKagan said. "We've written so much material and jelled so much more. We've found our identity, who we are. We started to find that out on the road. And we found out that there is no envelope for this band. It can go from one extreme to the other and still be the same band. For me, it's a high water mark. You go into rehearsal and every day you have to be on top of your game.

"Our reputation precedes us, and there is a curiosity factor, the Evel Knievel factor. And there is the music-lover factor."

McKagan said he and Courtney Love recently sang GN'R's "It's So Easy" together in Las Vegas, as celebrity guests at a clothing-store opening. "I'd talk to her a couple times since I've been sober," McKagan said. "This time she was sweet, just really nice, and healthy. She started apologizing to me for what Kurt [Cobain] said, criticizing Guns N' Roses, and I said there is nothing to apologize for. That's rock 'n' roll."

McKagan was one of the last, if not the last, person to talk to Cobain before his suicide. They flew together in first class from L.A. to Seattle in April 1994. "He said, 'Man, I just escaped from Exodus' [a treatment facility]. I didn't have any foresight that the guy was going to do what he did. I could tell he was bummed out, and I'd been that way before. We were at baggage claim, and I thought I'd ask him to come stay at my house. I turned around and he was gone.

"What if. Only if. A lot of my friends have died. If only he'd ... " McKagan's voice trailed off.

"But we're alive. We had a band meeting the other night to talk about business and just kinda take inventory, like, 'Is everybody cool with each other?' And we toasted this thing that we've done, that we've done it on our own terms. And it was so powerful. We didn't say it, we didn't vocalize it, but you could tell it was also like ? and we're all still alive. When all five of us could have been dead. And we're not only alive, we're stronger than we were when we were 20 years old."

McKagan sounded like he was choking up. But he pulled himself together.

"It's freakin' great!" he concluded.

Yes the same could be said to man people that drive after drinking and they have a blood alchohl level that is way over the lethal dosage! Want to know why? Cause they build up a resistance to a drug. Kurt was an addict he build up a resistance. And the majority of people that claim kurt was murdered were only 7-10 years old when he died. They wouldn't know shit about it. Plus, seeing as he was such a huge icon in rock, don't you think they would of went more in depth about it cause he died? Kurt Cobain is overrated simply because Nirvana was a good band but since he died they were elevated to a God-like status even being compared to Pink Floyd and Zeppelin which is not right. I have said it before and I will say it again: Nirvana was a good band. A very good one. However, Pearl Jam, AIC, and Soundgarden all were better because not only they had better lyrics but also better guitar playing in my opinion.

I have nothing but respect for Nirvana but it pisses me off how people started praising Cobain like he was Jesus since he died.

By the way, Duff is totally right. what if cobain would have been there when he turned? Things could have been different.

I seriously doubt any of the bashers are anywhere near as creative as Cobain was, or could do so much with such simple music. First, R.I.P. Cobain. The man was a damn genius, and he deserves to be remembered as such. He brought some of his own personal pain into the music industry that allowed for fantastic music, the problems started when other bands tried to copy him. He WAS a good guiarist (listen to Bleach, especially Love Buzz, School, Blew), and his particular style of playing brought a lot of emotion to Nirvana. I don't know whether Courtney Love hired someone to kill him (it's impossible that SHE did, she was in Italy at the time, but a lot of evidence shows she may have hired someone) or whether he took his own life, but either way, it still saddens me to think about it. And Duff seems like a genuinely cool person, and I'm glad VR is going in the direction it seems to be going in- Contraband has a lot of great musicianship that isn't evident at first glance, but gets better as time goes on. They'll never be as good as GnR (in my opinion), but it seems like with their attitude towards a new album they could be trying to surpass Appetite For Destruction and incorporate more elements from both bands rather than trying to come up with something completely different. Sticking to what you know in rock music is a good thing, especially when you're so good at it like GnR was.
