Fender Launches Billy Corgan Guitar

artist: smashing pumpkins date: 07/04/2008 category: general music news

Fender has unveiled the latest in their artist signature line of guitars, the release of the Billy Corgan Stratocaster.

Designed for maximum sound versatility, the instrument is made to mimic Corgan’s signature mid 90’s buzz saw tone.

"The versatility of this instrument is what impresses me and is why I’m really excited about this model," stated Corgan.

"This guitar has both a Strat articulation and enough low-end heavy metal sound to get the ‘Sabbath’ out of the guitar I want. My greatest go-to guitar got stolen at a Pumpkins club date in 1991, and I’ve always struggled since then to find a guitar that was my guitar.

"I’m really pleased with this model’s versatility, which I need because I’m playing music from a 17-year period of the Pumpkins’ history—from spacey early stuff to grunge to all-out cyber metal, then back to ballads."

The guitar is available for purchase now.

Thanks for the info to Gigwise.com.

How's he doing that? Dave Dustaine has a signature guitar, Alexi Laiho has one, Kurt Cobain has one. I don't see the problem.

Awesome guitar!
Of course, I'm horribly, horribly biased, but still.

Also, the reason for the not-lace sensor pickups is because he designed the guitar to have a wide variety of sounds so people can get their own unique tone out of it, not so they could just mimic what he has.

most of the time don't these guitar companies seek out the musicians with the idea of making a signiture guitar anyway? I don't see a problem, even if the musician came to said company trying to get a signature model, if I could have someone make me my dream guitar for free I'd go for it...I'd like to meet the guy who wouldn't...so I can kick him in the head.

Still, Pumpkins are awesome, so this is cool.

Although, the guitar isn't really that cool....

It is admittedly very standard looking. I can't see how this is any different from a standard American Strat in all honesty. This is just visually speaking at least. Even Geddy's sig bass, which is basically just the same black and white American J-Bass has some cool black inlays and better metal on the hardware.

Well, it should sound great. Right?

Im sure it sounds awesome, but its just a black strat. wooo.

Kind of surprised it doesn't have lace sensors. He used the red-silver-blue set which is really versatile but I really like this strat. I'm so glad fender is finally putting out another hardtail strat, I actually prefer them.

I don't I've every seen Billy with a Jazzmaster to be honest!

Anyone know which guitar was stolen? Was it the Strat with the marbled/psychedelic finish?

POSTED: 07/05/2008 - 03:00 pm / quote |

two of the pups are "specially designed" billy corgan pups, so that adds a bit to the pricetag.

Well I love it. Since I play a lot of hendrix's stuff.

JUST ASKING, but, is there any STRAT that fender sells WITHOUT the tremolo ? I don't like it and that's the only thing holding me up from buying an american strat. If anyone knows, hit me up please .

dude, that comment is insanely irrelevant.

anyhoo, it looks nice. probably doesn't sound great, though. you'd think for that price, they'd throw in a bit of his tremolo system.

Wow. Looks great. just like every other Fender Strat in the world. What will they think of next? Maybe a blue one? Or Red. Signature guitars should look kind of... well. Original maybe?

Warheart1188 :
Yea, it looks like every other Strat. It actually looks exactly like a Squier strat I've seen in MF one time. The best Strat Fender put out was the Eric Johnson strat.

Because a Tom DeLonge signature guitar is sooo much better.

POSTED: 07/06/2008 - 03:13 pm / quote |
Anonymouslyours :
ehh.
the only real turn on for me to this guitar is the two custom dimarzios. the third one is a chopper.
instead of getting this i'd rather get a fender american standard, new knobs, and some regular dimarzios, at least that'd have a tremolo.
the white looks nice but its not much of a custom.

Bobbito315 :
Well a strat is always going to look like a strat because believe it or not, it is a strat. And for a strat I do think this is fairly original. With that being said I don't really like it in any way. but that's just me.

I just order one yesterday on SamAsh.com, however, I got a call today from a rep saying that Fender won't be shipping any out till September-October.
