Well, that sucks, but they've deserved it. Since '95 it seems like Dave Grohl has been working on Foo Fighters: recording an album essentially by himself, forming a band, touring, recording a second album, doing the drums after original drummer quits, replacing said drummer, touring, replacing Pat Smear on guitar, only to have his replacement quit, more touring, recording another album, adding Chris Schifflet on guitar, touring, recording, recording and touring with QOTSA, scrapping Foo Fighters album and recording it again, touring, recording Probot album, recording a new two-disc FF album, touring, recording a DVD, recording a new FF album, touring, and I'm sure a dozen other things I missed. And that's just Dave Grohl! Taylor Hawkins has his own side project, as does Nate Mendel, and Schifflet has Me First and the Gimme Gimmes and Jackson United. It'll be good for them to take a break, do their own things, and then come back with a great new Foo Fighters album.

I think its good for them to take a break. They've never been away from the public consciousness and sometimes you need to sit back and let your natural creativity dictate where you go. Churning out mediocre album after album (which is what the foo's have been doing for the past 5 years or whatever) may be good for their bank balance but not so much for their credibility of a good rock and roll band. Its all been downhill since the Colour and the Shape for me. Hopefully if they take a good 3 or 4 years off, when they come back a new album will sound progressive and refreshing as opposed to the banality of recent recordings.

No harm man but they haven't been churning shite music out, admittedly 'One by One' was pretty mediocre, but TNLTL album was fantastic, one of my favourite albums, hugely diverse, and 'In Your Honour' an the recent effort were sound follow ups. Still i think they more than deserve a break, constantly working, especially as an artist can take its wear, hope they're back sooner rather than later.

Honestly, no. It's a technique used by many writers (refering to people by things they have done in the past) and it helps give more of an overview of what he's done if you don't know much about him, you're whining about nothing tbh.

I don't really understand this. Nothing that is quoted from Grohl seems to point me in the direction that they are taking a break from making music or touring anywhere but the UK. This may be another case of assumption we see so often on here. Likewise, Blink 182 is going to reunite... I can't trust anything I read on here that isn't in quotes.

Yes. Because it seems writers think that people are so small minded they have no idea who Dave Grohl is.

I personally think they deserve a break, and come back with great new material.

so true. it's the right time for them to take a break. wait until rock music is relevant and not dominated by mediocre bands like nickelback, buckcherry, and the like. and pop punk is really irrelevant at the moment as well. i went into hot topic (is not punk rock), to visit my friend that works there and the walls are plastered with Paramore posters, and a bunch of other bands that i don't even know who they are. i wish more bands i liked would take creative breaks to regroup and reboot. i wouldn't have to put up with the sub par albums they keep releasing just to remain "relevant" to a dying scene. we all need music to go underground, and stop making money, because it's ruining the art.

NNNOOOOO!! First Incubus and now the Foo!?! pretty soon there isnt gonna ANY good music on the radio! Well, atleast Rage and Alice in Chains are back. Maybe when either of them release new music America will remember what rock and roll sounds like.
But it doesnt say theyre breaking up. It says a 'long break'. Same with Incubus. Same with Weezer when they tooked a break. The Foo were on pause when Dave worked with Queens of the Stone Age too.
Heres the problem, the Foo have become a staple in music. Theyre stil awesome, but everyone expects them to always be there. So Dave's right: take a break, come back when people really miss you. And Id wager this might have to do with Dave wanting a break himself. This was the first band Dave ever fronted and look what happened. When QotSA were on tour in Europe Dave said in an interview that he was enjoying just being back behind the kit again. Because fronting a band was so exhausting. So yeah, Dave right in his statement, but I think it may have just as much to do with his own rest.

Its not an advanced technique, its patronising in a way, and what I'm saying, is that he has moved out of the Nirvana shadow. He is big enough to just be described as "Foo Fighters frontman/guitarist." It makes it sound like Nirvana is his only achievement. So I'm not "whining about nothing," you smug bugger.

why are people freaking out because of this? it's not that big of a deal. It happens. With Dave, he'll probably be still writing music, and doing stuff. Dave won't stray from the scene too long- it'll probably be like 2-3 years and he'll be back in top form.

RHCP will be back too. I think that you know, those guys are even older than the Foos, and it takes them a little longer to wake up. I love their music, and for me, i can listen to Stadium Arcadium all day and not get tired of it still.

I do wish Incubus was back around. But I think Brandon Boyd is actually going to college or something- USC (Southern Cal) I think? something like that. I don't know how long it will take him, but you know, i honestly think that what he's doing is smart- it gives him some new perspective- some new angles for his music. That guy is a genius with words.

lol, this year alone there have been new albums from Widespread Panic, the Black Crowes, Jakob Dylan, Mudcrutch, Mike Gordon, Drive-By Truckers, and Blind Melon. Gov't Mule, the Allman Brothers, and Phil Lesh & Friends are all on tour, and Phish might be re-uniting next year. Seems to me like rock is still alive

I like to foo fighters and I'm a big fan of Dave Grohl, but this is for the best. Anyways, the things that Grohl has done on the side (drumming for qotsa and doing probot) are better then the foo fighters in my opinion. So during this hiatus grohl probably won't be sitting on his ass, he'll be doing drumming in a bunch of other bands/side projects which is a good thing. Dave will also probably be in the next desert Session as well which is awesome.

why are people freaking out because of this? it's not that big of a deal.

Yes. Because it seems writers think that people are so small minded they have no idea who Dave Grohl is.

I personally think they deserve a break, and come back with great new material.

Not all of us are well informed on who are in/were what bands. For example my father was looking for Eddie Vedder's latest solo CD and the guy working at Circuit City didn't even know who Eddie Vedder was or who Pearl Jam was.

So what? That's his job. And he does get paid well for all this "trouble". And it's not like he didn't choose it.

Now they dont need to write a biography!!

I think in any walk of life if you work as hard as he does you deserve a break, and we wouldnt want them to just force a half baked album out, rather a 110% labour of love!

It aint always good when a band goes away for years and returns. You're never going to meet everybodys expectations. Take Weezer as an example.

Dave has worked his ass off for more than 10 years. He deserves a break for all the great music he's made.

During his hiatus, i bet Dave still manages to write a song or 6 about Courtney Love

Yes. Because it seems writers think that people are so small minded they have no idea who Dave Grohl is.

I personally think they deserve a break, and come back with great new material.

It annoys the crap out of me that he's referred to as Nirvana's ex-drummer - I mean, he is, but he's been the frontman for the Foo Fighters for the last 13 years.. Get with the times!!

But on topic, you wouldn't be able to comprehend how annoyed I was when I logged on to UG and saw this on the front page.. Fair's fair, they've worked their arses off for years without any significant break and they deserve some time off, but you never expect your favourite band to come out and say something like that. I hate the word 'hiatus' and I hate the words 'long break'.

Look, all this means (if they really are on a break, which the article doesn't outright say, as usual) is that other bands who have been quiet for a while are going to come back with kickass albums. Then, by the time you've listened those to death, the Foos will have their next album ready. It's a cycle.

We are definitely in the middle of a good rock music dry-spell.

If you think we're in the middle of a dry spell, you obviously haven't tuned your ear to any My Morning Jacket yet. But, all shameless whoring aside (!), I really like the Foo Fighters, and Nirvana, and QOTSA. BTW, this article really doesn't state in ANY way that they are done; It clearly defines the "long break" as being in the UK, but that may possibly cover everywhere else, too, lol. Anyway, I don't think their latest one is very good. The cut-off point for me was probably right around One By One (although I bought the IYH Special Dual-Disc edition, haha). Regardless, though, the Foos will always be one of my favorite bands, no matter how un-"Everlong" it continues to get.

especially since the foo fighters are probably far more relevant and well known to the current generation of rock fans than nirvana is.

we like our generational icons alive, thank you very much.

les_paul_01, I sadly believe you are correct. Yet our current genreation of PATD and MCR lovers should take the time to listen to "Unplugged in New York" or really ANY Nirvana. Music isn't just about Handlebars, Lollipops, and the Beatles! =p

Although, I had my time of PATD. I was surprised because on Pretty. Odd. they actually used geetars.

Well done Dave. Now go rest, and come back with some freakin' awesome music. I'm a pretty big fan, and even I can admit their sound has gotten a little stale. Long Road to Ruin is the only Foo Fighters single that I turn off if i hear it on the radio...no more Long Road to Ruin's!
