Golden Gods 2012: The Winners

The third annual Golden Gods Awards took place in Los Angeles last night, and the rock gods were out in force to celebrate.

Performances included a collaboration between "Riff Lord" winner Slash and Alice Cooper who played "School's Out" along with tracks from Slash's first solo album. Slash also played "11 seconds of noise" in memory of his friend Jim Marshall who died this week.

Rush were given the lifetime achievement award by Tenacious D, who said Rush "has been blowing our minds and expanding everyone’s definition of rock" for 40 years.

Korn's dubstep album won the award for "Best Album", proving (perhaps regrettably) that dubstep is officially part of the rock mainstream.

Slipknot won "Best Comeback" after the tragic death of their bassist Paul Gray, whose name is officially attached to the "Best Bassist" award which went to Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx.

The event will be broadcast on TV on VH1 on May 28.

How is Gene Simmons the Golden God and finally, why did that filthy-ass Manson get to go on last like he's really somebody? I watch this last night. I was think "finally a big show for metalheads" but what I watched was just disgusting. It made me feel ashamed for being a metalhead. The highlight of the show was Neil Peart, Yngwie & Trivium playing Creeping Death. The rest was horrendous. Black Veil Brides were horrible as expected but for their guitarists to beatMustaine & Broderick is just disgraceful. I was hoping for one true Metal guy like to apologise for all those shitty bands but it never came. Also Korn getting album of the year for a Dubstep album!!! Why? Oh Why? Also Dream Theater should of won the Best Comeback Award (Which is also a bullshit award because none of the bands in the category actually went away). They found a new drummer, released a successful album. Headlined The High Voltage Festival and Got their first Grammy Nomination. I'm sure Slipknot went through a rough time but they haven't really done much since Paul Gray died. Also X Japan winning best International Band.....I voted for Opeth on the voting page but then on the night they didn't even show up on the category. And if I remember correctly X Japan weren't even on the voting page.

When any musician dies, their talent is suddenly boosted, in some cases they deserve the recognition. Kurt Cobain is a pretty good example, he wasn't the most popular rock star on the planet in the 90s, and now people love the bastard, whereas Layne Staley, who died fairly recently isn't talked about half as much. Another example is "The Rev", Avenged Sevenfold was around for about 10 years, and he didn't get much recognition until he died. I guess it is really only pity. I am a Slipknot fan, but I do not agree with an award being made for him called "Best Bassist". Show was a disappointment though. I used to hear great things about it.

Eh... This isn't really worth worrying about. I mean, I don't need, or want, my tastes in music validated by any sort of award show. The average person probably wouldn't find fault with these choices anyway, because they don't know any better, and the average person is who they are pandering to.

It's near impossible to judge a musician accurately without having experience yourself, so you're either told who's talented by others, or make assumptions based on what you like. Since people love thinking that they know what they are talking about, even when they have no idea, this sort of pandering will always work... It's kind of interesting to think about.

Agreed. And this is what makes the elite musicians special. They don't think average. They don't conform to current trends and standards. Elite in a certain view of the term could mean the "best few". Hence, they will not win popularity contests like this (well, unless you're fortunate enough).

Moving on, to those of you pissed about A7X winning best live band and thinking that Judas Priest should've won, look up A7X's live shows because they blow Judas Priest out of the water. Judas Priest is a great band and I love them, but in terms of live performances, A7X has way more energy (which is most likely because they're younger) and they are more crowd pleasing, meaning that they interact with the crowd more and deliver a better SHOW. They don't just stand there and play the songs.
Paul Grey was an ok bassist, but do your research before questioning why he should have an awrd named after him. He was the main song writer in SLipknot. He contributed the most to the band AND got them started. Without Paul Grey, there would never have been Slipknot. He was a talented musician, not just a bassist.
However, what pisses me off the most is all of you calling us BVB and A7X fans little emo kids. We never go out and attack/make fun of you. We just keep to ourselves, listen to what we want to listen to, look the way we want to, and try to not cause issues. Maybe you should try doing the same thing and not judge us. You're nothing but a bunch of inconsiderate, ignorant bullies. Yeah, that's right you're just bullies. People need to understand that it is pretty much just down to who has the most loyal fans to vote for them. It's pretty much down to that, and if your fans are teenagers who go crazy over the band, then of course they're going to win.

However, I can see why the whole Metal thing is getting to everyone, considering Foo Figthers and Guns N' Roses were nominated for best live performance. You can't exactly call them Metal, as much as I like their music, they're just not metal, yet everyone's complaining about lack of metal fans actually voting when there are a ton more mainstream rock fans voting for them.

It's just down to opinions - and most of UG dislike half the bands that won awards, just calm down and accept that the event wasn't actually 'Metal'.

This is possibly the biggest disgrace to metal since what's her face tried to redo sweet child of mine. You could have literally picked anyone from that list for best guitarist and they would have been better then the Black Veil Brides. Best drummer, yes Jeremy Spencer wasn't a bad choice but Chris Adler is probably the most impressive drummer on that list. Amy Lee wins over Sebastian Bach and Ivan Moody? We'll come back to my complaint about this one at the end of my rant. Album of the year not a bad choice in mho I believe it should have went to Anthrax, 5FDP, or LoG. Gotta agree, the only winner I'm glad to see is X-Japan. (Wtf, Korn? Why were you even nominated?) I've been following them for years and their recent singles have been amazing; their upcoming album is going to take the world by storm.

While I would've liked to see more visual kei metal bands on here (Dir en grey, The GazettE, or Luna Sea, for example), that it's getting some well-deserved recognition is enough for me. ^_^

NONE of the winners should be privy to the titles awarded in comparison to fellow nominees. This is a result of kids voting for bands who fuse genres in order to gain bigger, commercial crowds and its utter BS!!!!! Give us our genre and pride back!!
