Gorillaz To Quit?

Gorillaz latest album "Plastic Beach" is likely to be the group's last.

The animated band's bassist, Murdoc Niccals, said with the group's third album their work "feels complete" and it could be the last time the collaborative project comes together.

Murdoc - who is a cartoon mouthpiece for project masterminds, former Blur Frontman Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett - said: "I think it'd be very hard to top this one at the moment. It feels complete... today."

He, however, added: "But every album I enter is made as if it's my first and very last."

"Plastic Beach" sees collaborations from artists including Lou Reed, Snoop Dogg, Bobby Womack and former clash guitarist Mick Jones and rap group De La Soul alongside Damon and others.

Murdoc also said that if he is discontinued he'd like his ashes to be fired into space, or inhaled by Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards.

Murdoc added: "If I ever do die, if I do get a choice I want my ashes ground up with charcoal and sulphur, shoved into a barrel, and then exploded out into the nocturnal sky, among the stars from whence I came. Either that or I'd get Keith Richards to snort them."

Keith famously hinted in an interview that he had mixed his own father's ashes with cocaine and snorted them, a claim he has since denied.

"Plastic Beach" is out now.

Thanks for the report to News.Yahoo.com.

I agree, I never was much of a Gorillaz fan anyway, so you won't see me missing them much.

Murdoc added: "If I ever do die...

Umm, you will. An arrogant thing to say, but being snorted by Keith Richards would be funny.

/discussion.

I mean, I'm sure that atm, he thinks he will never be able to top it. But let them tour, take a break and live life a while, he'll probably have new material.

Exactly.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a new album again somewhere down the road... Damon Albarn is a super creative guy, i'm sure he'll make new songs for Gorillaz. It's just a matter of time.

Human371 wrote on 03/10/2010 - 12:10 pm / quote |
If you thought gorillaz were just a one hit wonder band, then why read this? anyway they had at least 3 very successful singles (clint eastwood, 19-2000, feel good inc.) bah this new album would be a terrible note to go out on

Dakkstar wrote on 03/10/2010 - 12:13 pm / quote |
this album was weak. I was completely disappointed. How can a group that had massive songs end on this sad note?

Goth JR wrote on 03/10/2010 - 12:17 pm / quote |

I can't even believe the people who are saying this album is no good. First of all, Gorillaz is one of the most innovative and ground breaking collaborative hip hop groups today. Secondly, this album RULES! It's the best gorillaz I've ever heard. I don't know how you could possibly not get into songs like "Rhinestone Eyes", "Plastic Beach", "White Flag", "Superfast Jellyfish". I think it has taken what gorillaz was already good at and maximized it. Honestly, this is an amazing album. Screw you guys.

This album was really good, but nowhere near what they're capable of. I really hope they don't end it here

Gormanilius wrote on 03/10/2010 - 01:27 pm / quote |
The Gorillaz are not a 'one hit wonder' band and anyone saying so is being silly. Im pretty sure if you hear 3+ songs of theirs on the radio constantly, they can not be labeled as such.

The new album is ok, personally I liked the Alex Metric remix of Stylo quite a bit.

deadlyMETAL wrote on 03/10/2010 - 01:51 pm / quote |
Note that Murdoc didn't say this WAS the last or that he wasn't looking to continue working with the Gorillaz, but that he felt it would be hard to top that album, as any band would say after finishing a great album.

So, I'm not expecting any of this to be done anytime soon.

Just because you only like one song doesn't make them a one hit wonder band. Their 2 first albums were hailed by the media and imo both are absolutely great, miles better than anything blur ever put out, and I usually dislike hip hop. Not that they are a hip hop band, they don't really have a genre, if you only listen to the singles you won't have any idea of how original or how diverse their sound is. Except for this last album which is complete crap, they are closer to the beatles and blur (specially their first) than they are to hip hop.

Haha I remember hearing on the radio that they killed captain america. No, not the actor (if there ever was one), but in the actual comic they killed him.
Not quite sure how to take that lol

I can see how people can not like this new album as this is a guitar website predominantly, but I love them. I agree with a previous poster who said that you either love them or go meh, and I for one love them, and Plastic Beach is my favourite album by them, I think it blows Demon Days out of the water, and I haven't really listened to much of their debut either but from what I know I like this album more. I can't see them ending either, as they are pretty much Damon's "I'm bored with all my other stuff and I want to have fun" band, and they said that after Demon Days as well. They have a completely original sound and none of their songs sound alike, try comparing Spitting Out the Demons with Stylo and Dirty Harry and El Manana. You just can't. Ah well, just my two cents worth.

This ones more like the first album. Disjointed with very few hooks and melodies to keep you interested.

Demon Days seems to be their only good album, if they intend to quit now.

I'm pretty sure having two albums that have gone platinum multiple times combined with 9 charting singles in the UK, 5 in the US Alt chart, and 3 in the US 100 makes you NOT a one hit wonder.

Dakkstar wrote on 03/11/2010 - 04:39 pm / quote |
