Grammy Nominees Announced

Metallica, Judas Priest, Mötley Crüe, Slipknot and Disturbed are among the nominees for the 51th annual Grammy Awards, which will be held on Sunday, February 8, 2009 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The nominees in the "Hard Rock", "Metal", "Rock Instrumental" and "Rock" categories are as follows:

For the first time, nominations were announced on prime-time television as part of "The Grammy Nominations Concert Live!! - Countdown To Music's Biggest Night". The one-hour special — broadcast live on CBS from Nokia Theatre L.A Live — featured past Grammy winners and nominees reading nominations in several categories, as well as performing songs from the Grammy Hall Of Fame in celebration of the grand opening of the Grammy Museum.

Grammy ballots for the final round of voting will be mailed on December 17 to the voting members of The Recording Academy. They are due back to the accounting firm Deloitte by January 14, 2009, when they will be tabulated and the results kept secret until the telecast.

The 51st annual Grammy Awards will be broadcast live in high-definition TV and 5.1 surround sound on CBS from 8 to 11:30 p.m. (ET/PT).

I prefer Viva la Vida over Death Magnetic personally. Musically, it's a much better album. Best metal will go to Metallica, just because it's Metallica. Metallica will probably take best instrumental, yet again because they're Metallica. Hard Rock will go to Disturbed

Best Hard Rock Performance: Quite like Inside The Fire. Lords of Salem is OK, but not my favourite Zombie song. Haven't heard the others, other than Saints Of Los Angeles, which wasn't special.

Best Metal Performance: Haven't heard the Priest or Ministry songs. Heroes Of Our Times was good, as was My Apocalypse, but I have to say I like Psychosocial best there.

Best Rock Instrumental Performance: I've only heard the Metallica one, so it'd be unfair of me to comment

Best Rock Album: Death Magnetic for me, easily. Can't stand Coldplay. The other three are bands that I don't dislike, but don't really listen to that much.

Foo Fighters album was last year and it won best rock album of the year. Also, I am a fan of all kinds of different music like Gojira, Metallica, The Fall Of Troy, and Coldplay to name a few. If Coldplay won it would not be undeserved, it is a pretty incredible album. Also, Consolers Of The Lonely is an amazing album as well. It is a tough call between Viva La Vida and Consolers of the lonely in my opinion.

I agree with you, but in order to be eligible, the track/album had to be commercially available before September 30, 2008. So none of Chinese Democracy could be on this year's Grammy List since it was released 11-23. Maybe on next year's Grammy's though...

personally, i think that whoever nominates in the rock/metal categories only nominates the most mainstream or the most heard-about metal band because they absolutely hate that genre (damn pop/hip-hop lovers...) and they don't give a damn about how good something is. for instance, they only nominated Dragonforce because they've heard of them through stupid guitar hero...and mostly everyone's heard of metallica, so yeah. And then they throw in all the sell-out poppy, crappy artists like Kid Rock or Coldplay because they're so poppy and mainstream that they want to give them the award instead of to the bands that truly know how to rock...

It's because they're mainstream and popular... I'm not meaning this as an insult, (I'm a big Slipknot fan), but it's always going to be "mainstream" metal bands that get nominated. Extreme metal bands, like Gojira, aren't going to be nominated because they are fairly "underground" (from the Grammy's point of view). That's why there are metal focused award shows (ie Golden God Awards). No one cares about the Grammys anyway...

ya know i hope third eye blind gets nominated for a grammy next year. IMO they are a true modern rock band and their albums are worth buying. stephen jenkins is a great songwriter who deserves a lot of credit.

I want the Raconteurs to do well in this one. That's seriously a great album. And I'd love to see Dweezil get the instrumental. "Peaches En Regalia" is one of my favorite songs of all time.
