Green Day Punks Up 'Simpsons' Theme

In a new twist, the score soundtrack for the upcoming "Simpsons" movie, featuring Green Day's rendition of the show's famous theme, will be released simultaneously by three companies.

On July 24, three days before the film opens in U.S. theaters, Warner Bros. Records will put out the Green Day single (the band also appears in the film). Fox Music will make a digital score album available through its Web site and other outlets. And Extreme Music, usually known for its vast production music library, will release 25,000 pink doughnut cases to such specialty retailers as Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart and Barnes & Noble.

For traditionalists, jewel-cased CDs also will be available. "We really wanted to think outside of the box," Fox Music president Robert Kraft says. "The Simpsons Movie' was a perfect vehicle to try a new approach."

The idea largely was the brainchild of Kraft and composer Hans Zimmer, who scored the film. "Hans has a great relationship with Extreme Music," Kraft says. "They are known for their creative packaging. The model of handing over a soundtrack or score to a traditional label and then hoping it does well is changing. This is a coordinated marketing effort of behalf of Extreme, the studio and Warner Bros. Records."

Green Day recently recorded a cover of another famous tune, John Lennon's "Working Class Hero," for the upcoming Darfur benefit "Instant Karma." The song, which the group performed on Wednesday's "American Idol" finale, climbs 25-14 on this week's Billboard Modern Rock chart.

If this had happened in the Warning era you wouldnt be saying they suck, but just cos everyone bums them and its not "cool" to like mainstream bands, you slag them off.

not going for either argument here - but loads of bands (often pop-punk bands) that have simple guitar parts have much more complicated drumming than most other music. particularly guitar heavy rock. nothing wrong with either, just a different way of making music. guitarists are so narrow-minded (obviously there are exceptions, including you if you're fine with greendays simple guitar)

Sonic Youth did one of the best versions of the Simpsons theme for the episode Homerpalooza. The Smashing Pumpkins did appear in the same episode, though. The episode is in the show's seventh season, if you wanted to know.

Just because GD's music had changed doesn't mean they've become corporate ****. When they started writing way back in the 80's and their first album was in like 94 or sometime, obviously they've changed in that time. i was very sceptical about the sipmsons movie, but i read a review in Empire of it, and they said the opening 15 minutes was the funniest simpsons ever... soo looks a bit more promising. I dont see why GD need to punk up the simpsons tune tho... its fine as it is and will never be better than the original.

I just wanted to throw out there that Green Day does not suck. The only reason people think they suck is because they spawned a bunch of really crappy bands (Sum 41, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, etc.). People listen to these bands and just assume the whole pop-punk genre sucks and then associate them with Green Day because they are also pop-punk. And for the Simpsons movie, the Simpsons is a once great show that started to decline in quality around 1999. By 2002, every episode was complete garbage. Lets face it, the movie is going to suck balls with or without Green Day

I just wanted to throw out there that Green Day does not suck. The only reason people think they suck is because they spawned a bunch of really crappy bands (Sum 41, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, etc.). People listen to these bands and just assume the whole pop-punk genre sucks and then associate them with Green Day because they are also pop-punk. Mike Dirnt is an awesome bass player btw!! He may not play hugely complicated stuff like flea but he writes sum damn good catchy bass lines, and thats all that is needed!

RHCP are awesome, and much more talented musicians than Green Day. Anyone who says different is fooling themselves. Having said that, Green Day is one of my favourite bands and I like their music more than that of RHCP. Just because you like a band more than another doesn't necessarily mean they're more talented.

For the record, Green Day are not sellouts. They were making pop-punk way back in 1989; they were still making pop-punk when they went mainstream in 1994 with Dookie. American Idiot is more rock, but they're older, and they needed a change. Something different. Selling-out means changing your music and your ideas because of corporate ideals; Green Day did not in any way do this. Lawrence Livermore knew that they were too big for Lookout! Records so they went to Reprise on friendly terms and carried on making the same music, just with a bit more money to improve the quality and more opportunities. They'd already toured Europe and America out of their own back pocket. What was their next move? A 9-5 job? Wouldn't THAT in essence be selling-out of their ideals? They were musicians and there was nothing more for them at Lookout!. It was either move on or give up. But that wasn't an option either, because their lead singer was soon to be wed, had a child on the way and had next to no qualifications. The reason no one likes them is because their coming spawned shitty pop punk bands like Good Charlotte, Blink-182 and Sum 41, and everyone blames Green Day for this and throws them in the same case. The difference is that Green Day got there by elbow-grease. Good Charlotte got there by looking pretty and hosting an MTV show. Get what selling-out is yet? As an aside, they let Lookout! keep the rights to both their first album, which have given that area of the punk scene a lot of money. Forgotten their roots? Hardly. Billie-Joe and Adrienne own their own punk/indie label.

The Simpsons movie is good and the punked-up theme tune is amazing.

I'm done. Disagree with me if you will, but no one's going to change my mind. Green Day are amazing!
