Green Day Top The Charts

Green Day knocked Bob Dylan off the top of the UK albums chart yesterday (May 17), going straight in at Number One with their new effort "21st Century Breakdown".

Dylan's album "Together Through Life" slipped to the Number Eight spot, with Green Day's album clocking enough sales since its release on Friday (May 15) to bag the top spot ahead of rivals including Maximo Park and Lily Allen.

In the singles stakes Black Eyed Peas went straight in at Number One with their comeback single "Boom Boom Pow".

UK singles chart Top Ten:

01. Black Eyed Peas – 'Boom Boom Pow'
02. Tinchy Stryder featuring N-Dubz – 'Number 1'
03. La Roux – 'In For The Kill'
04. Eminem – 'We Made You'
05. Lily Allen – 'Not Fair'
06. Ironik – 'Tiny Dancer (Hold Me Closer)'
07. Lady GaGa – 'Poker Face'
08. Calvin Harris – 'I'm Not Alone'
09. Ciara featuring Justin Timberlake – 'Love Sex Magic'
10. Prodigy – 'Warrior's Dance'

UK albums chart Top Ten:

01. Green Day – '21st Century Breakdown'
02. Lily Allen – 'It's Not Me It's You'
03. Lady GaGa – 'The Fame'
04. Prodigy – 'Invaders Must Die'
05. Pink – 'Funhouse'
06. Maximo Park – 'Quicken The Heart'
07. Beyonce – 'I Am Sasha Fierce'
08. Bob Dylan – 'Together Through Life'

Thats good. I felt this album was much more superior than American Idiot.

Now we wait for the overkill of this album.

I've heard "know your enemy" twice and its so remedial and pointless. I know that punk rock is supposed to be simple, straight-forward music....but this is just lacking any excitement whatsoever.

i'm not surprised it when to the top it's a good album but this album has it's share of great songs and rather simplistic talentless songs. my favourite is 21 guns i'd say know your enemy is the most overrated one on the album

This album would likely have been top regardless of how good it was - people would still buy it. But as far as i am concerned, i really like it, and i don't normally like Green Day - American Idiot was ok, and Dookie was great, don't care for the rest - i'm into metal more than stuff like this, but this album is really good.

lol pm everyone who judges this album only by listening to Know Your Enemy is totally wrong since that's the worst song. and 21stCB is the most political song so i think not everyone will like it.

this is an epic album imo and deserves to be number 1.

Not surprising but totally deserved. Personally my least favourite green day album but hopefully it'll grow on me as it is still a brilliant piece of work for what it is.

Really enjoying ¡Viva La Gloria! Murder City, Restless Heart Syndrome and Horseshoes & Handgrenades and looking forward to the tour!

Very good album in my opinion, one of Green Day's best albums, if not the best. I love their old stuff as well, but I think they've come a long way and its for the better. The albums are produced a lot better, Billie Joe's voice has definately improved even more (he always had a great voice, but I think its even better these days)

Exactly. Know Your Enemy is catchy but zero substance. But, the more I think about, the more I'm glad thats the first single. Butcher a song where there is nothing to butcher really. I mean, they could've picked one of the ballads or one of the numerous other songs on the album and come out huge right away, but they didn't.

In any case. I really really am into this album.

I've always thought there was a difference between real punk and punk rock, but maybe that's just the way I look at it.

Either way, I'm in the process of listening to the album, and I gotta say, I feel a little let down. Maybe my tastes have just changed since 2004. There are a few tracks on here that I really like (Viva la Gloria! and Murder City) but other than that I can't really get into it. Maybe the album will grow on me with time.

That's not really the point of number one albums dude, everyone could buy it in its first week to see what it's like and they all absolutely hate it, but it would still get to number one cos of album sales. Charts are popularity lists with many of the buyers going in blindly. I, however, am a great fan of the album.

This is a great album and I don't see the need for people to whine about it. American Idiot is a different album than this, stop saying it's the same. It [bis[/b]still political at times, but that doesn't mean its them trying to remake it.

Also, Know Your Enemy is good in the context of the album. Listen to it in order.

This album is not old Green day, its kind of a mixture between Greenday the warning years throwing in some My Chemical Romance and some pretence at being queen like rock opera in places.

The albums not bad its just not good and not Greenday.

The album went to number 1 as american idiot sold well and theres alot of sheep nowadays people.

Whilst the album is policitcal in places it also feels false, where it feels punkier it feels like thier trying too hard and should now just settle down in to the pop punk genre Greenday ahve become and go tour with Avril and Pink.

The Greenday of old is dead, and so it should be, they were a product of their time.

To be honest if I was in my late 30's to early 40s with a wife and a couple of children happy with my life and not a stupid kid smacked out of my head on drugs and scratching to make it, I would be writing differently and making different music.

Its what Greenday have eveolved to.

This would probabaly have happened to other bands of the era who imploded, we have yet to see if this will happen when faith no more release thier new album, but influensical band slike Nirvana if they were still around would have thier old fans moaning about how good they used to be(actually in the case of Nirvana I think they would have fadded in to obscurity)

Love the name. Peacemaker is on my my favorite songs from the album.

And I agree. Know Your Enemy, as far as the studio album is concerned, is one of the weakest tracks. It has very good LIVE potential, though.

I don't NOT like ANY song. The closest song there is to the "Do not like" zone is Christian's Inferno, but even that one I still like.

Listen to any original punk-rock song from the sex pistols or ramones they literally took five minutes to write, but they were amazing. Original punk rock was about doing your own thing and not giving a shit about what other people think anyways.

A five year old? I hardly doubt so... If you're going to try to diss them, at least be intelligent and don't pull crap out of your a$$.

And there is no resemblance to AC/DC here. Sure, there are power chords, but about EVERY BAND ON EARTH has used power chords.

Wow. I agree. The world disappoints me, too.

Personally, I find this news entirely shameful to the music world. Now, I'm not a fan of Green Day, at all, however, I will give it to them, they have a good fan base. The music... eh, kind of makes me want to vomit. How they could top Dylan on the charts is beyond me, but I could see how they could be up there. I still think that Bob Dylan deserves his place at #1. But then again, the Billboard Charts aren't really a reflection of skill or how good the music really is, it's merely a reflection of album sales.

its topping charts because of the name "Green Day". would make no difference if the album was shittest thing ever or greatest thing ever it was always gonna sell well. its their first album in five years.

and from what i've heard its not bad

Now we wait for the overkill of this album.

I'd say Know your enemy was one of the weaker songs on the album, but hey ho..

im a big fan of glam metal, and all things hard rock.

big suprise, Know your enemy not in the top ten and yet the album is no.1. green day have always written albums, not just singles... and in my opinion kye was a poor choice for the first single...

Why is everyone loving this album so much? It's so pedestrian and bland, half of it may as well be an MCR record, the only Green Day album I haven't enjoyed. Every track sounds ridiculously similar, mostly starting with piano or picking intros and then going into the same power chord rhythm and a massively overused structure

loganpwns wrote on 05/19/2009 - 09:00 am / quote |
please, lets not call this a punk album, its clearly not

I think they deserve it. It's a great album. I don't really like Know Your Enemy, but songs like Viva La Gloria and 21 Guns are pretty great.

Oh, and can we not call it a punk album? Not that it isn't great music, it's just not punk. Pop punk, maybe.

Dude.

It's Green Day. That's the structure of... Well... Every song they do. Or ever have done. Ever.

So, I suppose if you're a new band starting out, you should really just label yourself as a pop/punk/rock/metal/folk/country/motown/rnb/hiphop/deathmeta l/emo/screamo/alt/nu-metal/rap/grass roots band so you can forgo the lame ass excuses like 'they're not punk' anymore.
Let it go people...it's rock...it's music...wether it has 2 chords, or 50 chords....1 word lyrics, ..or 1000 words.
Everyone remember Rage Against the Machines song 'F$%k You I won't do what you tell me'...? How many times is that repeated over and over? Why do you think that was? ...IT'S ARTISTIC CHOICE! If you don't like it, skip it.
Green Day made an album they wanted to make. It's melodies are incredible, and the fact that the album tells a story is something that every songwriter should be envious of.
There's a rule you follow in the studio...K I S S...keep it simple stupid....you don't have to write the craziest riffs in 5/8 timing wilts singing opera to impress other musicians. You just have to write good songs.

Congrats Green Day! This album is incredible.

And.... who called it? kind of a no brainer really. they r mainstream, so they become successful with songs that a five year old could write and that resemble riffs in the likeness of ACDC, but they r rich and famous. Good job world. you never fail to disappoint.

Im with you, it sucks that actually talented bands spend months writing songs, and then a bunch of antsy retards can discover three chords, and use them to write an album in the amount of time it takes me to do a shit.....

I can't wait to get this album! I still listen to American Idiot all the time; Jesus of Suburbia is probably my favorite off that one. I haven't heard anything from this one yet, though... Hopefully I can get it soon!

Are you kidding me? Concept albums are hardly new, and most of them have much stronger stories than this. Listen to Dream Theater's Scenes From a Memory, Queensrÿche's Operation: Mindcrime, or even Bathory's Blood on Ice, then talk to us about concept albums.

I'm no fan of GD, nor will I ever buy this album (or download it, for you semantics majors), but man, "21 Guns" is a freaking catchy song!
