'Guitar Hero: Aerosmith' Announced

Activision Inc on Friday unveiled a new "Guitar Hero" video game focusing on the rock band Aerosmith, taking the billion-dollar franchise in a new direction.

Called "Guitar Hero: Aerosmith," the new game will arrive in stores this summer, a surprise to many analysts and fans who had expected the next title to come out closer to the year-end holiday shopping season.

Aerosmith, known for hits such as "Dream On" and "Sweet Emotion," is the top-selling American rock band of all time, with sales of 66.5 million albums in the United States alone.

The game will feature about 30 Aerosmith songs as well as others from various acts that have opened for the band. The price has not yet been set.

"The premise is that it's going to cover the 30-plus years of the band, from high school all the way through the rock superstardom of today," Kai Huang, head of Activision's RedOctane unit, which guides development of the franchise, told Reuters in an interview.

In the "Guitar Hero" games, players try to press colored buttons on a guitar-shaped controller in time with notes cascading down the screen. If the notes are hit, the song plays properly, and the player earns points.

Since the original "Guitar Hero" was released in late 2005, the series has gone on to sell more than $1 billion. Depending on the version, a bundle including the game and a controller costs from $80-$100, while the stand-alone game costs $40-$60.

When Activision reported quarterly earnings last week, analysts grilled the company on its plans for the franchise, expressing concern that sales would slow this year because many players who bought earlier versions with guitars would opt to buy the lower-price stand-alone game disks.

Huang said Activision had not yet decided whether it would offer a special controller with the Aerosmith game.

YES!!!!! Finally, I get to play tunes off of Toys In The Attic, Get Your Wings (although Same Old Song And Dance was on GH3), Rocks (although Last Child was on GH2), the self-titled album, and several others!!!!! I love Aerosmith and Joe Perry is one of my favorite guitarists, since he has heavily influenced my playing style. This is a huge treat for me! ROCK ON, AEROSMITH!

well this is a huge shocker because next to nobody thought this would be a smart business decision. this means they aren't stretching out to a lot of genres to reach the maximum number of people to entice into buying the game. i guess they have some freedom to explore new directions now. i will expect to see more guitar hero games in a similar fashion after they release the Aerosmith version, if it proves successful of course.

this won't sell neeeeearly as many copies as the previous games...if they are going to make an entire game dedicated to one band, they should release them more frequently, like one every 2 months or something...a hardcore gh fan might not buy this unless they are also a huge aerosmith fan...i think this will hurt the franchise financially...but who knows.

How about a coheed GH game where it takes you trhough the amory wars and subsequent stories and you play along to progress to the next part of the story. Kick off with some Time consumer....go through the story and end up at some end complete

seems stupid to me as well, but i disagree with people who say they'll be losing money... "Aerosmith is the top-selling American rock band of all time" (didn't know that before) and there are hundreds of thousands of casual gamers who already have previous versions of GH; that's a huge installed base... and all Activision has to does is keep the same engine, with a few small tweaks. It'll probably be a lot like Rock the 80's was... maybe they'll have band skins (scary to think about Steven Tyler's virtual mug). Activion/Neversoft will probably milk this franchise dry by providing little in the way of innovation and releasing sequel after sequel. Ever heard of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater?

how about this for an idea. take a successful concert series and turn it into a game featuring bands how have played the concert. Ozzfest, Warped Tour, or how about Woodstock even. I for one think a GH: OzzFest would be killer. And this isn't necessarily even a major release - it certainly isn't Guitar Hero 4. For all we know, they'll shell it out for £20 as a kind of mission-pack for the hardcore Aerosmith or GH fans. They could make a variety of different versions of games like this, I imagine they could do one every three months, and that'd be great because eventually someone you like will get featured. Besides, if a rollercoaster based on Aerosmith can make a profit, there's no reason a videogame can't.

I think it's just that they're having problems getting the rights to too many good artists, groups, and bands.

Aerosmith are good. I think it'll be neat. As long as it comes out for the Wii, I'll buy it. I'm a huge fan of Aerosmith (as I personally love blues-rock.)

As a note, if you like Led Zeppelin, then blues-rock stuff like Aerosmith should be very much up your alley.

Now, I do aggre that they half-way sold out when Steve Tyler stopped writing his own lyrics in the early 90's (when they re-kindled their careers after spending the early 80's getting off of drugs), but they still make good music and Perry is still an amazing guitarist.

I would've thought a Guitar Hero: 50 Years would've been a better choice. Where you start off in the 60's, with Blue Cheer, Cream, Hendrix etc. and move on to 70's with Led Zep and The Clash etc. and eventually you get to 2008. If they released this at 2010 it'd be awesome.

I second that idea. That would be pretty sweet I would buy it but sadly i dont think a lot of people would. Guitar hero is ok, but rock band is much better. I'm not a big fan of aerosmith though so im not gonna be buying this. They're ok though. I'd buy another guitar hero game like rocks the 80s where its songs from a time period or genre. Like if they did Guitar hero rocks the 90s or Guitar hero Alternative, Guitar hero rocks the 70s, Guitar hero Punk, or Guitar hero metal... id buy any of those but i really dont care for aerosmith, makin the game around one band isnt very smart, no matter how much people like aerosmith its still not a smart move on neversoft and activisions part. Wow- pretty shocking they'd base a game off one band, I agree. But I'll probably buy it seeing as Joe Perry has some bad-ass riffs. Sure they're not metal riffs chug chugging along, but I personally love blues-rock too. And if you want the challenge of playing hard-ass metal - play it on real guitar! well this is a huge shocker because next to nobody thought this would be a smart business decision. this means they aren't stretching out to a lot of genres to reach the maximum number of people to entice into buying the game. i guess they have some freedom to explore new directions now. i will expect to see more guitar hero games in a similar fashion after they release the Aerosmith version, if it proves successful of course.

Its more than likely that Aerosmith are only going to be the first band to have their own game; whilst I'm pretty ambivalent about Aerosmith, a Guitar Hero: Iron Maiden or Foo Fighters would totally float my boat. As to whether or not it will succeed or 'fail', I'm fairly certain a big company like Activision (or whoever) will have done their market research and wouldn't go ahead with it if they didn't know they'd make a profit. Oh, and Zeppelin are pretty renowned for their unwillingness to give their songs to things such as this. By the way, this is the first time I've actually felt compelled to post a comment on a discussion on this website.

no theyre not KISS had a few games. 50 cent (the talentless doiuchebag that he is) had his own game too. hopefully theyll be the first to have their own GOOD game. But its not likley, the great thing about guitar hero (dont own it but play it at parties) is that there is a diverse selection of songs and theyre planning to take that all away, i doubt this will sell very well.

No particular punk band was "most influential," and the Ramones had at least a couple hits, undeniably. (They may not have been super-popular until the past decade or so, but they're well known.)
I would say the clash had as much influence on 'punk' musicians as the Ramones ever did, and I'm fairly sure they had more albums.

You obviously know absolutely nothing about what you're talking about then.

Real guitar is ALOT harder than guitar hero. First of all, how long have most people been playing guitar, and overall practise (in terms of hours) before they can play a Dragonforce song 100% perfectly (which I doubt you can, as you think it's nearly all finger-tapping).

If you had been playing Guitar Hero for years on end, you'd find it a hell of a lot easier than guitar.

Secondly, Guitar Hero on expert mode often includes more than one guitar part, or maybe a few added buttons to make noises that were added in the studio etc.

Guitar Hero also requires alot less coordinaton than guitar. and you don't have to move to different positions all across the fretboard, not to mention there's only really one picking technique needed (rather than including sweeps and sweeps with tapped notes etc.) and you don't have to mute etc in Guitar Hero to achieve perfect clarity of notes.

On topic, I think this Aerosmith thing is certainly an interesting idea; though, we'll have to wait to see how it all plays out. I'm not a huge fan of GH. The comments saying Activision will not be making money off of this are incredibly dubious. They have market analysts and whatnot analyzing this stuff. Firms do not enter markets unless they are confident that there is profit to be had. So, unless you call yourself an economic expert and/or you work for Activision and know their fixed and variable costs, you are wasting your breath.

Being the first doesn't make them the most influential, though. Led Zeppelin and The Beatles certainly weren't the first rock and roll bands to change things up, but they influenced many following artists, most likely more artists than most other Rock bands influenced. If you're referring to the way that a band would influenced another band, and that other band would go on to influence other bands, thereby spreading the innovations of the first band, I get what you're saying. Still, I would say the Clash and other English punk groups had as much influence on future punk groups as the New York / American punk scene(Groups like Television or the Ramones.) did.

One other thing... It's not all Aerosmith. I don't think they specified how many songs are gonna be on there not Aerosmith, but I would suspect anywhere between 10-20 more songs. So why complain? That's gonna mean som GNR and some Motley Crue probably(Sorry I can't do the fancy shit with Motley Crue, I have issues with it.) Although, I do agree with the people that are saying it should be genre based, because that'd be much better, but Aerosmith'll be fun. And if you don't like the other instruments... Well, if you're a huge guitar hero fan, maybe you should buy Rock Band. As you can see, Activision is just milking this franchise whereas Rock Band is breaking new ground with Downloadable content. Hell, Rock Band doesn't even need a sequel, it already has 53 downloadable songs and there is still more to come.

Personally, I don't play Guitar Hero or Rock Band, but this doesn't sound like the best idea to me. I think that by doing this they really narrowed down the amount of people that it would be appealing to. Aerosmith is awesome, but I think they'd rather not have a bunch of fans just because they can play their songs on Guitar Hero.

Point being Aerosmith is one of the most famous bands, even nowdays, when they're going to be calling it quits, from what the band has previously said. They have so many hits, and their songs are so different from each other a game can be made out of just them.

While they have a lot of hits, there are other bands with just as many if not more hits. The Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin, David Bowie (though not all of his music would translate to GH), there are a lot of bands with more hits, this is a smart move to put aerosmith in the game if they were going to put one band, but its not a smart idea to begin with. A ton of bands have as many or more hits than Aerosmith. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Beck, The Beach Boys, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Talking Heads.
And there are many others that don't come to mind.

some bands that have hit songs...those songs aren't necessarily good GH songs. like, would you really want to play "yesterday" or "i want to hold your hand" on guitar hero? probably not. i can see your point on led zeppelin, but i think aerosmith is a more marketable band. (they have their own roller coaster...nuff said.)

While their earlier material wasn't particularly interesting guitar-wise, The Beatles' Later material is very possible on Guitar Hero. (Helter Skelter, Something, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Taxman, The End, etc etc) I wouldn't exactly base a game around them if I were to design the next guitar hero, though. My point was that they had far more hits than Aerosmith. I do think Queen and Pink Floyd could easily translate to guitar hero, though. I'm not sure they would sell as well as Aerosmith - but then, I'm not entirely convinced that Aerosmith would sell well in the first place. I know I wouldn't put my money towards it.

how about a guitar hero: black sabbath? but as a twist, u play all the years with ozzy, dio, gillan and glen hughes, u play as iommi or geezer butler throughout the game, but u also play songs from ozzy solo, as rhandy rhoads and zakk wylde, plus u play in deep purple cause of ian gillan being part of it, and rainbow and Dio because dio was part of it, and, if you want, black label society.

After the disappointment that was GH3, I don't think I'll be able to even take this seriously. The note charts on GH3 were pure trash in my opinion. Not that the song choice was bad mind you. I did like most the song choices.

And honestly, this idea doesn't seem too intelligent..I like GH1, and 2..But now that Activision has control, I seriously doubt that it will do any good. Aerosmith is an alright band, but buying an ENTIRE game of them? No.

Aerosmith is not exactly the first band I'd choose for this. I think they're alright, but this is just a bad idea. When it comes down to it:

On the plus side, they will also have songs from bands that have opened for/toured with them, but that's still really limited. I can't see this game selling very well.

And if they do make it a game that is centered around one group they could at least make it harder songs like some stuff from Michael Angelo Batio, or Yngwie Malmsteen, or even Buckethead he was in Guitar Hero 2 and that sold fine. maybe even all of them and make it Guitar Hero: Solo Artist!!!!!
