Guitar Hero III Announced

After warming their amps in the basement garage to rocking sold out shows at Stonehenge, fans of Activision, Inc.’s wildly popular Guitar Hero franchise will now be able to shred like never before with the next iteration of the game that will be available this fall. The new game will be released on the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system and Playstation 3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and Wii video game system from Nintendo.

Turning it up to 11, Guitar Hero fans will channel their inner rock god using Gibson Guitar’s Les Paul and Kramer models as the industry standard. In addition, players will experience an incredible number of newly added features and explosive content including a new multiplayer action-inspired battle mode, grueling boss battles, a bevy of exclusive unlockable content and authentic rock venues. Expanded online multiplayer game modes will also allow axe-shredders worldwide to compete head-to-head for true legendary rock status.

While continuing to retain all the key features from their prior legendary performances, fresh downloadable content will be offered on multiple platforms, and players can now shred to a killer set list from many of the gnarliest rock songs ever recorded. Delivering more master tracks than ever before, strategic partnerships have been secured with all the major and independent music record labels and publishers to allow unrivaled access to their deep history of music catalogs, along with supplying artists’ original recordings for even greater authenticity.

The initial list of face-melting awesomeness includes:

  • Paint It Black (by The Rolling Stones)
  • Cherub Rock (by Smashing Pumpkins)
  • Sabotage (by Beastie Boys)
  • The Metal (by Tenacious D)
  • My Name Is Jonas (by Weezer)
  • Knights Of Cydonia (by Muse)
  • Rock And Roll All Nite (as made famous by Kiss)
  • School’s Out (as made famous by Alice Cooper)
  • Slow Ride (as made famous by Fog Hat)
  • Cult Of Personality (by Living Colour)
  • Barracuda (as made famous by Heart)

For the first time ever, Guitar Hero fans will also be able to thrash and burn with new wireless guitar controllers available for each platform. The exclusive Gibson guitars will include innovative features such as removable faceplates that will allow fans to later personalize their guitars and make it their own, and a new button color design that will be integrated for an even greater authentic feel and rock experience. Gibson Guitar’s Les Paul model will be the battle axe of choice, and an industry standard for all rock gods on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 system, and Wii. After much anticipation, PlayStation 2 system fans will also be receiving a new exclusive shape as well, the classic Kramer guitar, also a Gibson brand, popularized by hard rockers and known for its body design, pickups, electronics, and construction for furious finger fretting.

I think the only reason that some of the premier artists are not on this is due to restrictions from the record label(s) and/or the bands themselves.

    GH2 was mostly metal.

Glad to see a Muse song on there. Hopefully the expert difficulty has that tremolo section during the initial build-up.

Well, I had three predictions for songs to be in this game. KNIGHTS OF CYDONIA WAS ONE OF THEM. My other 2 were Find the Real by Alter Bridge and Welcome Home by Coheed and Cambria. 1 for three so far

    THEY'RE USING SABOTAGE!!! REJOICE!

Great to see they're using a hiphop song and not just sticking to metal and classic rock.

    Songs that would be sweet:

    Renegade - Styx
Maybe I'll Die Tomorrow - Paul Gilbert (Movie theme or something) would be an awesome bonus track. It kind of reminds me of Jordan.

Am I missing something? Listening to a band doesn't make a band overrated, it just makes them more popular. Say a 100,000 people start to listen to Metallica a bit because of the game, would that really make a difference seeing metallica has millions of fans?

Metalcore could be considered metal, but it can be more hardcore than metal. And when it gets like that, they should call it hardcore metal tbh. Back on the subject, can't ****ing wait fo this game. But i realy do hope they put some more metal in. Even if they are just bonus tracks. Songs like, Viking Kong by Racer X or Technical Difficulties by Paul Gilbert. And at least a Children of Bodom song

Megadeth has been in every GH game along with Kiss(i think). Its time for some soft stuff, but still great songs. The only think i won't be interested in are the really cleche songs like rock and role all night and school's out. It will still be awesome though.

People who are worried that their favorite stuff isn't on here should breath for a minute. This is eleven tracks and the game was just announced. The first two games had somewhere in the neighborhood of thirty tracks, and GH II's final setlist wasn't released in its entirety until shortly before release. There will be more.

As far as making genre specific games, they are doing that to an extent. They've got an eighties glam-rock specific one coming out (I Wanna Rock, Metal health, Round and Round, Holy Diver, that kinda stuff) for PS2 and will probably explore other genres sooner or later.

Can we all just shut the hell up about who is metal and who is not? Christ. It doesn't matter what you think of the next person thinks about what genre a band is because either your views and lebels are going to conflict and it's just going to cause tumult.

As much as I hate people who pwn at the game the think they get on a real guitar and shred, the game is quite fun. I'm happy to see that there is Tenacious D on there. Slayer would be awesome on there so would Metallica, but Metallica are to cheap to allow it. If Cliff were still alive he would allow it.

You are one arrogant son of a bitch. "I know more than you", "Slayer suck because my opinion is law". Nobody cares, ok? Fact is, Trivium and A7X are metal, whether or not you like them. Not all metal has to be good, not all metal needs to be approved by you. You can't have a genre populated by only good music. It just doesn't happen. Besides, Trivium finally got it together with the Crusade.

After saying that however, GH seems to be going downhill after the original. I hated the tracklist to GH II

    Yeah...
See, I play for the passion of playing. I love music, I love writing music, I love guitar, and I love the feel of a real guitar under my fingertips.

"Thousands of dollars and years of my life in practice." - I'm completely self taught, the only money I've spent is in buying my guitars, which I love more than my life. As for the term practice, is practice really still practice if you really have a passion for it ? I sure as hell know that I don't practice, I play.

And screw the record deal, I'm talking about personal satisfaction. I suppose if pressing a series of buttons
is your way to gain that then by all means go for it.

Anyone that put's down the guitar for good for the sake of this game doesn't deserve the joy of playing anyway.

You also said that you were a "guitar nut", and that was your reason for buying the game. I'm supposed to derive you being curious about the game from that statement ?

I can't imagine how James Hetfield's voice would sound if someone tried to recreate it. The real one is already terrible enough for someone to have to come in and make it worse.

So rest assured, I would beat the song and then avoid playing it at all costs afterwards.

Its stupid making the comparision between playing the guitar and playing this game. Guitar hero is nothing like playing an actual guitar. I don't get all the hate for this game amongst guitarists.

So you can't listen to a good band because they're overrated? Get over yourself.

And for all this talk about, "Real guitarists should be ashamed of this game" You do know that a lot of professional guitarists play and love this game right? And you know why? Because its a video game. Created to have FUN. Just like every other video game out there. It was made for people who can, and can't play guitar to have fun. Plus, this game has made a few of my friends actually pick up the guitar, and I have 3 more clients in teaching guitar now. Not to mention this game gives more exposer to bands who need it. So stop making accusations at people just because they enjoy playing a video game. Let your childish side come out and take this stick out of your ass, live will be a lot easier.

come on, the people who decide what songs should go on guitar hero dont care about the music, they just care about making money, they are just probbably putting the songs on that they enjoy listening to instead of what other people would like on it. i bewt that the people who decide what songs to go on are not even guitar players, just people out to make a fortune out of all the people stupid enough to buy the game.

that's not true either. all the people who chose the songs actually play the guitar, and they put songs they think will be enjoyable to others. not everyone's a metalhead; lots of people like blues, others indie. . . .they try to even it out. you don't like it? deal with it

plus they actually get to use the real recordings in this one! they use to have to do crappy covers. i don't know about you guys, but i thought the heart-shaped box one on GHII sucked big time

chimaira, Children of Bodom, Dragonforce, Job For A Cowboy, The Red Chord, Beneath The Massacre, Origin, The Faceless, Necrophagist, Odious Mortem, Misery Signals, Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster and as it goes for older bands maybe Danzig, Cryptopsy, At The Gates,Cannibal Corpse or carcass and Annihilator

so whos with me on having some of those bands on the new guitar hero?

Nicely done. So you've just admitted that you paid some ridiculous price for a toy that you use possibly 1 hour a week, just because you like to associate with anything to do with guitars. Hey, I've got a pubic hair that's curved itself to look like a guitar... you want that ?

You're blowing it way out of proportion, I don't associate with everything that correlates somehow to the instrument, I merely bought the game out of curiosity, that of which I probably should have reiterated several times to ensure I did not mislead plebeians such as yourself.

I thought it was interesting and never planned to give up the actual instrument and replace my actual guitar as I very well knew I would never get anywhere playing an imitation and not the real thing.

I never insinuated that it's making people put down the guitar for good: "As for one of the largest guitaring sites on the internet being open to the idea of a game that actually gives you a reason to put down the guitar - for no matter how long - in exchange for a battery operated plastic toy, I am apalled." Anyone that put's down the guitar for good for the sake of this game doesn't deserve the joy of playing anyway.

You also said that you were a "guitar nut", and that was your reason for buying the game. I'm supposed to derive you being curious about the game from that statement ?

I just don't agree with the concept of the game. I can't understand why anyone would want to play a game like that.

dude it's just a game...and they play it cause it's fun, entertaining, and it's a good party game to play with your friends, just cause it's not the most realistic thing in the world doesn't mean it sucks, so what...you're playing a plastic guitar on tv, it's just fun (to me and apparently alot of other people at least) btw, i would like some AC/DC songs on there, sounds like this one's got some good songs going to be on there

Some people take themselves far, far too seriously because they've learnt to play guitar.

You are hitting a string, strapped to a bit of wood, held over a pickup. Got it? Please repeat this the next time you feel your ego inflate.

I love guitar, i love to play and write music, but I by no means think that because I make a noise on an instrument, that I am suddenly a Disciple. Its still possible for people to, you know, *just* have fun. Those arguing against playing Guitar Hero because "you can just play the real guitar!"... yeah....I could *also* enlist in the army instead of playing Ghost Recon, but I don't think so.

And further, a number of my friends have started to learn to play real guitar after they got hooked on the game.

Anyway... great to see Smashing Pumpkins and Living Colour on there. Glad they've backed off the metal a bit.

So shut up already and talk about the damn game ! Everyone says GHII was mainly metal...well...I must disagree ! "Hangar 18," "Madhouse," "The Trooper," the...Lamb of God song that I can't remember...and maybe a few others; that makes GHII mainly metal ? No, just no.

Pantera - Floods / Cemetary Gates.
    Megadeth - Tornado of Souls.

Asinine, purely asinine. If anything, Korn and Slipknot aren't metal. O.o. "OMG WE GOTZ DWNTUND GETARZ MENING WERE HEVY MENING WERE METALZ!1111" No, just no. For us enlightened metalheads, we all know that Trivium WAS metalcore, and is now heafy/thrash/speed/whatever metal, and In Flames is melodic death metal. Korn and Slipknot ? Nu metal, and since when has anyone permitted nu metal bands to stand alongside the other genres of metal ? Never, because we're elitist pricks ! ^_^ And I can live with that.

Also, if I could pick any song and have it be in the game, it would be Highway Star by Deep Purple.

And in the vein of Trogdor, they could throw in "Cut You Up With a Linoleum Knife" by Mastodon (from the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie).

In GH1, they said "Don't worry, they don't REALLY want you to play Freebird" and Freebird is actually the final song in GH2. In GH2, they say "Remeber, NO STAIRWAY!", which I think means that Stairway to Heaven will be the final boss song (and what a song this is going to be!)

I think having Genre specific versions would be great for the game and the company profit and popularity-wise, like have a Classic rock version, hard Rock, Modern, METAL, Blues, etc. or have them downloadable. it would be so much better. on another topic, having some classic thrash metal like slayer metallica megadeth and others wou8ld be awesome, but i do have to agree with one of the previous comments, people would all of a sudden say " OMG Metallica (or whatever) is my favorite band they're soo good " but then when you ask them what their favorite album is, they can only name the one off GH. Metallica has millions of fans and there's nothing wrong with turning new people on to cool bands and shit but i think it would get annoying, hearing people talk like they know everything about a band but they've only heard 1 song... Off a video game. lol

Do you actually expect Metallica to let Guitar Hero do it? HAHAHA! Anyways not a bad song list at all to start. Nice to see them go for more popular artists for the comedic songs like Tenacious D and the Beastie Boys.

I don't care that much about the tracklist. I admit that the greatest flaw about the 2nd part was the small amount of really kickass tracks, but it also made me learn some stuff (Carry On Wayward Son and that Allman Bros song) which I wouldn't have explored if there had been a lot of Zeppelin on the game.

What I'm really excited about is the new wireless guitars, which will basically allow for people like me to make an even bigger ass of ourselves than ever before. They could've added a toggle switch though: would've made the Tom Morello and Buckethead stuff all the more realistic...

Plus I figure it could add a certain excitement if you flick the switch and then release a scorching solo for certain songs, just like in real life

    Trivium is not metal.

We're commenting on this crap, yet no mention of the obvious Spinal Tap references with no hint of a Spinal Tap song for the game? (I don't really care their songs kind of annoy me and their much funnier without instruments, found it interesting though)

To all you people saying Trivium is NOT metal...have you listened to their new album? Yea their older stuff is metalcore but their new album is 100% thrash. My brother has it, so I borrowed it and now have a new respect for Trivium. I used to hate them.

Love to see Tenacious D on there. Also SUPER excited about Sabotage, I love the Beastie Boys and that is one of my favorite songs ever of all time. Yessss.

I hope there is less metal this time, and less classic rock... two genres I can't stand (as a whole).

    @vengance-
That's one hell of a thought out list. Probably need to add some lesser known bands into the bonus list, but I'd play the s#it out of that game.

And to everyone else who keeps saying that GH demeans real guitar because everybody now thinks they can play it: Does playing Madden make you think you can throw a 75 yard touchdown pass? If you are good at Fight Night, does that mean you can go out and fight a professional boxer?

It's a game; 99% of people realize it as such, and as many people that I know play the game, none of them legitimately thought that they could play "Freebird" just because they mastered it on a plastic guitar. Just get over it and quit being offended that someone is having fun with a guitar game.

As for one of the largest guitaring sites on the internet being open to the idea of a game that actually gives you a reason to put down the guitar - for no matter how long - in exchange for a battery operated plastic toy, I am apalled. I used to play with that sort of crap when I was 5, it was better back then too, it had an inbuilt speaker so I could play it anytime I wanted!

    Honestly, this is shameful.

Am I the only one that thinks that pressing buttons on a toy is a lot less fun and/or satisfying than actually accomplishing something like learning a song for yourself ?

dude, it's fun, end of story. and ive actually found that it contributes to finger independance and dexterity, and I know you could do the same thing and more with constantly running scales, but sometimes that just gets mind-numbing.

I would be ashamed too if I was a narrow-minded person like yourself. 9 out of 10 people would say the opposite of your opinion right thar; Majority rules and people wanted those bands in and Activision decided to listen to them. I think what people are getting at is that even though Trivium are TECHNICALLY metal, they are not worthy of the title of "being metal", if you know what i'm sayin. Personally I think saying Trivium is metal is straight up embarrassing to the genre, but thats just me.

Anyways I heard they had Slaves Shall Serve on GH2 but I never saw it on 360? That would be ****in killer to get heavier shit on there like Behemoth again. Some tech shit like Dragonforce or Necrophagist or Sleep Terror would be killer too.

hahaha, if you think METALLICA would be strict with putting their music on here, just sit back for 2 minutes and imagine how hard it would be to get ZEPPELIN, notorious for not letting people use their songs, to let them put even 20 seconds of one of their songs on their (which sucks, because it cant be a REAL guitar video game unless they have the zeppelin in at least ONE of their games)

These people are doing a great deed to our music culture, don't you see? They're putting (mostly) decent music into a game and turning people on to better stuff than most of what comes out today. So what if people like the music. What kind of snob would dislike the idea of "their" music being in a video game. Besides, maybe if you didn't suck at it. You would like it. So deal hombre, it's just gonna get better and better.

You know, i've found that people that are good or have even played guitar for more than 2 months, are realtivally good at Guitar Hero, so for people that say they play guitar, and hate guitar hero cus they suck at it.... lemme put it this way, if you're not good at a game with 5 buttons the size of the neck, and you want to play an instrument with 138 different sounds (# of strings times # of frets), you should probably spend alot more time on the guitar, or switch to drums (no offence any drummers that read this, though i dont know why they would...)

If some kid who plays Guitar Hero is going to school saying he's a great guitar player, by all means, feel free to school his ass. Show him up. I'm only saying this because that HARDLY EVER HAPPENS. I own the first Guitar Hero for PS2, and I play guitar. That does not make me a poser. It just means that when I have people over, this is something we can do together. Not everyone I hang out with plays guitar.

I completely agree. I've read through this forum and all people want to do is hate on it becasue they are good guitar players. Noone is going to try to get a record deal for playing guitar hero, it's just a fun game that doesn't force people to spend all their time and money on playing the guitar.

This is a good list, although I do have a problem with having November Rain in Guitar Hero. the game is awesome. its a good laff. and nobody who can play guitar hero well would claim to be good at real guitar. what the game needs is solos, and things that make you have to play hard. playing the same not iver and over again is boring as hell. therefore most metal is crap for the game (note, for the game, not full stop). get some old school rock in there. gnr, maiden, clapton, hendrix, vai etc. nobody wants to here someone scream down a mic while you play the same notes over and over again.

I like the inclusion of Sabotage too - shows the game designers' willingness to expand the genre scope.
I think the best way to move this game forward would be more funk - I think strumming patterns are probably harder to master than the hammer-on/pull-off shredding.

Heh, I feel proud that I play both real guitar and Guitar Hero (whenever possible, as I don't own a PS2, but rather a Wii .) Even though I'd rather see people picking up real guitars and playing, Guitar Hero as a franchise is actually a very good way to influence rock and guitars and REAL LIVE music to those people who think computer bleeps and bloops are music. Maybe they should create a peripheral that could hook onto a real guitar, and you could create your own songs or play songs on different difficulties using six strings and however many frets you have.
By the way, I've played Jordan on Expert in GHII. I lasted about 30 seconds. Note that I play real guitar (I can play Jordan on real guitar, and I even have a video of it on YouTube under the same name as my user name) and I can only play on about a Medium difficulty level in GH. I feel quite proud of myself :P.
Anyways, I'm going off-topic. There should definitely be some Metallica here this time. I know, the whole thing with Napster, but think of the good marketing, Metallica! We need One, Sad but True, The Shortest Straw, Master of Puppets, Enter Sandman, ...And Justice For All, Blackened, etc.! I'd really like to see Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb and Empty Spaces/Young Lust, too (as if I already haven't mentioned Floyd in my last post, but I'm just stressing the seriousness here.) Come on, all of you inspirational and big bands of the greatest era, the 1970s, put your songs in GHIII!

a lot of you are complaining that they need to put better songs, but sometimes that isn't possible. all the songs on the game are covers, which means they have to hire musicians to create the cover songs. how many people out there can create a decent enough cover of a satriani song or a hendrix song? and for those who can, they'll want some serious cash, sometimes more than a video game development team is willing to fork over even for one song, let alone a few dozen. but who knows, maybe they have enough cash stashed from the sales of the first two that they can afford better songs cause believe me, i am all for better songs. i'm just saying, they're not just holding out on us.

Whoops I remembered it was Winger not Warrant who did Seventeen. I get the W-bands mixed up.

Cool.....I still think that there should be a better song list though. Why not songs like:

    Black Dog - Led Zeppelin
    Paranoid - Black Sabbath
Layla - Derek & The Dominoes
    Dream On - Aerosmith
    Enter Sandman - Metallica
    Love Hurts - Incubus
You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC
Pour Some Sugar On Me - Def Leppard
November Rain - Guns N Roses
All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
    Eruption - Van Halen

This is a good list, although I do have a problem with having November Rain in Guitar Hero. Don't get me wrong on this one, it is one of my favorite GNR songs but it takes a pretty long time for the guitar to come in and that's a lot of sitting watching the guitarist stand and do nothing.
Yeah that is true but I Figure look at carry on my wayward son.....that took a while before the guitar started coming in.

just 2 questions. how is The Metal in there if Tenacious D wasnt formed until the 90s? and also, how come they put Beastie Boys in there? arent they rap?

    Mr. Brawl wrote on 06/14/2007 - 12:54 pm / quote |
The Beastie Boys are rap, but they also usually have rock rhythms, riffs, and beats in their songs. They also have a lot of Zeppelin in their songs; I don't remember the name of the Beastie songs, but they took the drumbeat of When the Levee Breaks and the lead guitar in The Ocean to create two different songs. So, yeah, they can be in Guitar Hero III.

yea man.. i thought of that too.. but i jsut said the trivium master of puppets because it is better than metallica's. but that is the best encore song ever.. i hope they consider it and put it in the game.. at least as a bonus song..

ok if anyone actually reads all these comments you need to leave. And also, anyone who thinks this game is stupid your wrong. If you think we should spend our money on a real guitar, shut up! I have a Strat, and I own This game. and for people who don't play guitar, they don't really think they are gonna learn by playing. They just want to have fun. People don't play Tony hawk to learn how to skate. So shut up, don't buy it if you don't like it, and play ur real guitar. As for me I'll be playing my real one, which sits right next to my little plastic one.

Yeah, MattStrat is completely right. I do the same; I play Guitar Hero (whenever possible; I don't own a PS2, only Nintendo ) and I play my own Strat. There's nothing wrong with playing both at all.
As for more songs for GHIII, here's a list.
Dragonforce - Operation Ground and Pound, Through the Fire and Flames
George Thorogood - Bad to the Bone
    Buckethead - Nottingham Lace, Padmasana
Metallica - One (it HAS to be there. NO EXCEPTIONS.), Shortest Straw is an amazing song as well, so it should be there, too.
Chevelle - Straight Jacket Fashion, Vitamin R, Open/Point #1, just some Chevelle please.
    Shinedown - Save Me, Heroes
RHCP - Readymade, Storm in a Teacup
Audioslave - Cochise, Show Me How to Live, Your Time Has Come, Out of Exile, Be Yourself, Gasoline, Like a Stone, Revelations, One and the Same, Jewel of the Summertime
There's a whole lot more that needs to be in here, but just those for now.

they should put canon rock (arranged by JerryC) in there, maybe as the top song or something, that would be THE SHIT!!!! I also want classics like Clapton, Zeppelin, Metallica, AC/DC, Vai, Pink Floyd, Satriani, Priest, Malmsteen, Ted Nugent, Rolling Stones, Aersomsith, Santana or some prog stuff like Dream Theatre and maybe some euro metal like Nightwish, Rhapsody of Fire, Epica, Kamelot, Dragonforce, Helloween, Sonata Arctica... you know the ones if you're into that sort of music
