Guns N' Roses Bottled Off Stage

artist: guns n roses date: 09/02/2010 category: general music news
rating: 0 / votes: 0

The Guns N’Roses car-crash continued last night after Axl Rose kept fans in Dublin waiting for over an hour – then walked off after three reportedly lacklustre songs.

Support act Danko Jones played for 70 minutes and went off at 9.10pm. But GN'R didn’t appear until 10.30, by which time the restless Dublin O2 audience had begun booing and hissing.

Eyewitnesses say Rose’s performance was uninspiring until the band broke into Welcome To The Jungle. At that moment some bottles were thrown onto the stage, and Rose stopped the song to warn the crowd: "One more bottle and we’re going home – we’re here to have fun but one more and we’re gone."

At 10.50 another bottle hit the stage while Rose was introducing the band. He said "Good evening" and walked off, leaving the unhappy audience furious. Ten minutes later a venue official announced they were experiencing "technical difficulties" but hoped to bring GN'R back on, but at 11.10 the house lights came up and arena staff began advising people the night was over.

Video of Axl stopping the show can be watched below (advisory: adult language).

But at 11.25 the band went back on stage and began playing again, to an almost empty room, leaving many of those who’d left even angrier than before. Eyewitnesses suggest Rose spent the best part of the show downstage with guitarists DJ Ashba, Richard Fortus and Bumblefoot left to lead the performance.

Almost immediately Rose’s Wikipedia entry began to be vandalised, with one edit saying: "Rose is noted for having stolen 80 quid off 10,000 Irish people." The clean version of the page has now reappeared.

Rose has yet to state who he blames for the latest in a spate of recent fan-alienating episodes.

GN'R played in Belfast the previous night, starting a relatively brief half-hour late at 9.50pm but playing a full-length show until 1.10am. While some audience members described the performance as technically proficient but lacking in emotion, Guns N’Roses News reported: "Axl captivated the crowd with his mere presence and the engaged audience absorbed his every lyric. Every voice was united in effort and the result was spectacular."

Thanks for the report to RockRadio.

I am returning my GN'R tickets for the concert in prague. You know if this was the original GN'R I'd accept it. But when you're leading a new band under a big name and know the fans aren't 100% convinced about it, you shouldn't do crap like this. And these tickets aren't cheap.

im not defending axl cause he IS an ass, but he opted to stay if the audience wouldnt throw shit at them (a common concern) and no1 complied.

There's always gonna be that one guy who's gonna throw that bottle or pushes the button that shouldn't be pushed. If Axl says something like that then it's only daring for it to happen. He knows full well what'll happen when he says something like that.

Axl has been being more of an ass lately, but people shouldn't throw shit on stage, either. Why pay to go to a show just to harass the band? By now people know full well what Axl is like and what sets him off, and people still go on and do it anyway. He's been showing up late for many years, so if you don't know that before going to the show, that's your fault. When I saw them back in '06 I fully expected a delay, so I wasn't too bothered by it.

He really needs to start realising without the fans he'd be nothing. But as long as he is in GN'R he'll keep dancing in the money.
I hope people stop buying their tickets and CD's and merch, just to see how pissed Axl gets.

Alot of the people who are saying that the fans were throwing bottles gave the band a reason to leave but the band rockstarring their fans by going on an hour late and then half-assing it when they finally did show.

Bands who don't screw over there fans and don't treat them like walking wallets don't get everyone in the first 17 rows throwing bottles at the stage over and over.

I was there last night, they got the story a little wrong here on UG it seems. They did 5 songs before Axl walked off, all of which were performed very well, it was AFTER they came back on that the show went really bad. It was a half assed, boring performance for the remainder of the gig by Axl, he just stood there dragging himself through the songs, clearly pissed off. I'm glad I only paid 20 euro for this gig

Is Axl the bad boy rocker who breaks the rules and starts his shows late? Or just a crybaby who storms off stage when a few bottle hit the stage? What a turd; no wonder the real GNR lineup won’t get back together with Axl.

I remember a Pantera set where the crowd started a massive fight throwing trash, dirt, sod, and when it hit the stage do you know what those guys did? They started throwing it right back and played through the set, not even stopping when the cops started arresting people. That’s ****in rock and roll!

This is kind of sad. As much as Axl is historically a dick. To be fair, I'd jump in after anyone who threw a bottle at me during a show; however, Axl's conduct has been increasingly poor, or at least publicized, recently so continuing to act in such a way is unwise. You have to give him some credit though, he's making more money than even most famous musicians, and can still be as much of a dick as he wants.

Absolutely agree. Its just not worth it to stay out there and risk having a glass bottle hit you in the face, which could permanently blind you or worse. I'm no big fan of Axl... but he did the right thing by stopping the show and getting his bandmates out of harms way. WhyTF are they
letting the audience in with glass bottles anyway? If you wanna blame someone, blame the venue or the promoter, not the band.

First for the record....the curfew for a concert to end in the 02 arena in Dublin is 11! This is to accommodate the fact that there are people living around the area & the fact that the arena is miles away from proper public transportation!(which evidently ends between 11.30-12.00 in Dublin).

Now, I actually feel that it's the fault of the idiots who paid for the show. It's not GN'R it's "Ego-trip & the stragglers". Why would you go to that show knowing he was like that and then to test him by bottling him?

I remember months back, A friend in college asked me when I was wearing a GN'R T-shirt, "Hey mate, you going to the show this September?" reply: "So I can see Axl Rose walk off stage?" -psychic or common sense????

That's how it should be, and Iron Maiden doesn't treat their fans like crap, because without us, they'd be nothing.

1. He is more successful than any of you will ever be, just face that fact.
2. He didn't show up to have bottles and shit thrown at him, he came to put on a great show, and there is no way he can do that if he's being disrespected and not being able to enjoy himself.
3. He had a responsibility to stop the crap before it escalated further (e.g someone gets hurt, fights break out etc.)

Honestly if I were there I would be more mad at whoever the jackasses were that were throwing bottles than at Axl.

I guarantee you that if you put any band in this situation SOMEBODY in the band would stop it and do the same thing, because that's not why they became musicians.

With all respect to the g'n'r music, but axl is just being an ass, his stage act is insulting to rock 'n' roll and that hat on the guitarist is a cheap rip off from slash, even fans of current g'n'r have to agree on that and worst of all, they showed up an hour late so you had an hour to figure out people would be pissed and not just a little, but really pissed.

after reading and leeds i would have spent more time in the bar fully aware they would probably come on late. but when they finally come these people are ment to be fans of the band, why would you bottle them and boo after every song when this is what youve paid for. i was waiting for the part when axl sticks his finger up at the crowd and tells them to go **** themself, bu he doesnt, he just says that he wants to stay and play and politely asks people to stop or theyll leave.
you cant tell a band to **** off and then moan when they actually do. if you think theyre **** dont pay to see them

There is a way around this Axl goes on late crap. Insist of having the contract written so he pays everyone in the arena that is working for the overtime. They are there working they don't want to have to stay late just because some retard can't get up on stage at the appointed time. Not to mention that it pisses off the fan base. You think there going to buy your album now. I think not. Great way to increase your sales. Slash was right for leaving.

I don't blame him for what he did, (leaving that is). Whether it's Axl Rose, Metallica, Justin Beiber, or NWA, you're there to see them perform, not to throw bottles at them.

Of course, I do understand that people were throwing bottles because of how Axl made the crowd wait to see them, but still. Not only is that rude, it's highly disrespectful. When you hire a plumber and he arrives half hour late, do you pelt him with water bottles? Of course not, because A. He'll tell you to screw off, and leave, and B. He'll more than likely sue you.

K, my view on this. Axl was dead wrong to have kept the GnR fans waiting that long for no particular reason as ive gathered. IF they were having technical difficulties at the start, its excusable (I've been to a show which had a 40 minute delay from tech diffficulties. I was annoyed, but the band did a great job), but as I can gather, he had no reason to keep em waiting.
Second, Regardless of how late the band were, the FANS of the band shouldnt try to pelt bottles at him, jsut makes you as bad as he was.

Again, people didn't pay to go to the show just to throw crap at Axl. These are the fans that were probably excited to see one of their favorite bands that only come around once every few months and the band rolls in an HOUR late...not 5 or 10 minutes...an hour. That's even worse when there is a hard curfew for the show. Then adding insult to injury by, from several opinions, half-assing the show.

That doesn't excuse throwing things but it explains why they did it and I highly doubt they throw anything if they show up on time and even pretend to care. They shouldn't have thrown anything but the band didn't help matters by cheating their fans out of their money. If they didn't pay to throw bottles on stage, they sure didn't pay to hear a shortened show and a disinterested performance.

3. He had a responsibility to stop the crap before it escalated further (e.g someone gets hurt, fights break out etc.)

Honestly if I were there I would be more mad at whoever the jackasses were that were throwing bottles than at Axl.

1. Sure, the more successful you are, the more you're entitled to be a douche. Nice logic. Seems to be the trend though, sad but true.

2. Even though many people said here that they expect Axl to be late at concerts, that's no excuse to be so. If they came on time do you think the crowd would be as pissed?

3. See number 2.

Sure, the retards who were throwing bottles have a share on the blame, but you absolving Axl is just chicken s***.

I recall watching Faith No More's Video Croissant about 16 years ago, detailing their time on tour with GN'R - they actively encougarged a (Spanish?) crowd to throw bottles at them as they opened the show for GN'R (& possibly Metallica). One bottle had been used by someone who clearly needed the bathroom. Mike Patton ensured the audience were aware of the contents, stood on Axl's autocue monitor at the front of the stage, removed the lid and poured it over his head.
Rose needs to get a grip on reality.

Axl deserved it. Please, promoters, stop booking GnR. Every week we see that Axl showed up late, and now he half-asses a show and walks off. Who does he think he is, Beethoven? When did this start?

Pencil Man wrote on 09/02/2010 - 09:35 pm / quote |
Also, if I was a roadie I'd either be laughing my ass off or quitting, because that's a lot of equipment to handle after Axl walks off after 3 songs.

1. Actually, by that logic he should have a duty of respect to the people that granted him that success in the first place; the paying fans. He is treating them with disdain and virtual contempt. Sure, he's been going on stage late for nigh on 20-odd years - still not a valid excuse or reason. As for being more successful than anyone here... are you really certain of that - there's a reason people use aliases...

2. Sure, he did't show up to have bottles thrown at him. He was there to put on a show. For paying fans. At a specified CONTRACTED time. He has the arrogance to turn up late then he pretty much deserves to be treated in kind.

3. He could have easily stopped "the crap" much earlier. Going on stage at a reasonable time would have helped. As for fights and injurfy? It never seemed to bother him before... (St Louis, anyone).

Stop defending the fool, you are only making yourself look stupid.

Nido, Dave Mustaine is far more the professional than Axl ever was.

Someone needs to tell Axl about professionalism in music. Going on an hour and a half late when you are above the age of 40 is just horrible to do to fans.

Anyone remember when Soundgarden opened for GnR and blew them off the stage? I remember watching the payperview live from France. Soundgarden crushed it, and GnR mailed it in. Appetite was a landmark, the Use Your Illusions had their moments, but overall, GnR are one of the most overrated bands in rock history. Two decent albums and a history of shitty shows? Give me a break.

biff022 wrote on 09/02/2010 - 10:10 pm / quote |
Everyone defending Axl needs to get their balls together. THE SHOW STARTED AN HOUR AND 20 MINUTES LATE. In the US many venues are subject to curfew and this behavior would be even less tolerable than the bane it already is. To start that late is unacceptable and is taking advantage of fans who pay great money to see you.

biff022 wrote on 09/02/2010 - 10:14 pm / quote |

From what my touring buddies said, back then, G'n'R would purposely start their shows late. Why? Coz, Axl knew that they couldn't top the opening act. They would wait until the crowd died down, then they would start. After all these years, I guess the fans have caught on.

The fact that it appears to be an empty plastic bottle does make this look a bit absurd, but no one likes shit thrown at them, especially if you're trying to focus on performing and having to worry about dodging objects (how insulting is that?). You don't know if its gonna be a plastic bottle or glass one till after you dodge it. And if you give a warning or 2 and have to deal with this regularly you'd be pissy. What SHOULD be done is security in the front being professional and able to spot these *******s and throw them out and that should be the end of it. OFC I'm not denying Axl is a primadonna douche, but doing this just makes it worse from a late show being a late, cancled show.

1. He is only rich and successful because of the money generated by record sales and albums. So in other words the fans are the ones giving him his success. Face that fact.
2. Axl is a pansy. According to this article, there were at least 10,000 fans at this show, MAYBE 20-30 idiots decided to throw bottles. I am willing to bet a majority of the audience truly wanted to see GnR, so Axl should have just grabbed a pair and played the rest of the concert and not let down his fans.
3. It's not the bands responsibility to stop any hostility in the audience. What the hell do you think goes on during metal concerts?

In conclusion, I think the people throwing bottles and Axl himself are all jackasses, however, Axl is more of a jackass simply because there were legitimate fans in the audience who payed to see GnR, and got a whiny pansy walking off stage on the account of a few water bottles.

but thats not all..after he left he went out to the back gate and shouted abuse at the fans calling us 'wankers' and 'f*****g pricks' also the staff came out and the lights came on they then told all of us that he wasnt coming back and escorted people to the door.
When we got out and heard he went back on we tried to get back in but because of the greed of the o2 staff etc... they wouldnt let us diehard fans back in and now we have to go to a small claims court for a refund? absoloute joke! Guns 'N' Roses R.I.P 1985-1993....i hope slash comes back to ireland to do a all age gig at the o2 because he and myles respect the fans and give us a show we paid for.....btw the only reason axl came back out was because he was made to just watch the videos of after he stormed off....he really did not want to be there.

If bottles were thrown at me on stage I would refuse to play as well. regardless. I have only been to a few gigs and it has happened on more than half. It pisses me off so much.

Throwing things at the act (any act)-unacceptable

Stop standing up for Axel. He was an hour and a half late! Why people continue to go to his shows is beyond me. Axel N' Roses is a joke.

Awesome spelling and punctuation!
Maybe you need to have a mindset recalibration!

Also yes, people went to the show to piss him off on purpose.....

Let's look at the actual scenario, which is that Axl Rose once again in his tour was ridiculously late, which pissed off his fans who paid handsomely to be able to see him. I refuse to believe that it was an accident on his behalf every time. He was purposefully late, which lead to the anger.

Oh, and nice job blocking some of your swear words and not others. Maybe mommy and daddy should have given you money for education =] =D =)

you can all complain about them leaving the stage after arriving an hour and 20 mins after the support band. but 80 mins isnt that late reali it takes a good 30 - 50 mins to change over most bands and i dnt think iv been to a gig recently when the headline band was on anywhere earlier than 40 mins after the support act and what do u expect with guns n roses twice as long??? cos i would and to then throw bottles and complain when they leave just doesnt make sense your either there to watch or there to ruin it for those who are there to watch. so those who are angry be angry at those who threw bottles i wouldnt put up with it and would you if you was in a band. jus be happy they are there and enjoy the show while they are. and be angry at the people who threw stuff on stage. guns aint the only band to leave because of stuff been thrown on stage and you dont hear this fuss about them!!!!!

before i get the usual camps of old guns/slash against new guns and axl i have to say this
im a big fan of slash and axl yer old guns n roses may be better and maybe the new band shouldnt be called guns n roses but the new band are a great band in themselves if it was anyone else but axl fronting them they would be regarded that way too. dnt understand y ppl wont jus let go of what was and enjoy what they are making now

To be fair, it's dublin's fault. I mean, shouting "boo" and "**** off" the whole time and then throwing shit on stage, who the **** are you to complain when Axl goes home? Sure he came late, but he was there and you forced him off. Your bad...

ok all of you shut up. You act as though Axl has no right to do this but in fact I can give you various reasons why he has every right.

Well that's pretty irrelevant.
Legitimate fans? I'm pretty sure I, as a legitimate fan, wouldn't go to see my favorite band just to throw bottles.

Come on guys! Quit complaining! It's all the fan's fault for instigating! If it were any of you, would you stand to perform under a barrage of bottles?

And by the way, I'm not 100% sure, but there was a tech guy going up to the stage sweeping glass. So that kinda hints at the fact that they were beer bottles, NOT water bottles. But hey, my eyes maybe deceiving me.

I do NOT support Axl in any way though. I mean, the guy should expect some negative feedback after arriving an hour late. But beer bottles?!? Pathetic...

If Axl would have at least apologized for being late or giving some kinda excuse for it then maybe the croud wouldnt have been so pissed. I DONT CARE WHO YOU ARE, if you want respect in this life you must give respect in this life. Maybe someone should remind Axl that in the real world you reap what you sow.
