Guns N' Roses Hit Best Buy Bargain Bin

Best Buy is no longer interested in taking a bath on Guns N' Roses "Chinese Democracy", and is now practically giving the album away.

As the exclusive U.S. retailer for "Democracy", Best Buy is offering a special deal on copies of the CD; you can now purchase the album via BestBuy.com for just $1.99.

The retailer reportedly paid $14 million for 1.6 million copies of the album, according to Hits; to date, "Democracy" has sold just 614,000 copies in the U.S., based on Nielsen SoundScan reports.

Simple math suggests Best Buy has close to a million copies collecting dust in its stores and warehouses – no wonder they're looking to unload the album at any price; retailers aren't fond of stale inventory cluttering up their systems.

Released in November of 2008, "Democracy" was officially certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on February 3, 2009 for shipments in the United States in excess of one million copies.

As of October 2008 it's sold 28 million copies worldwide. So either Axl is a genius at marketing and was able to sell 52 million copies of an album from 1987 in the last 2 and half years or you need to check your facts. Also, the number sold doesn't equal the quality of the album. Shit, Nickleback has sold 21 million albums in the US, that doesn't make them that great.

Axl is an iight singer at best. AfD was their best album, and still most people find its not amazing. Anything after is mostly garbage.

Saying he's not is 100% hipsterism. Apparently, these days it's cool to blindly hate one of the most recognizable voices in rock based on the fact that he chose to keep the name that everyone else in the original band didn't really like anyway... and because he hires good musicians.
Appetite for Destruction is one of the best albums, front to back, of all time.

And to everyone who thinks it can't be good without Slash, or that Slash made GNR: I like Slash, but Axl Rose is a much better singer than Slash is a guitar player. Sorry. It's true. Also, Bumblefoot could play circles around Slash. Once again, I like Slash. I love the way he plays, but he's definitely not the best or most original guitar player. He's like a hard rock version of David Gilmour.

And I would bet that everyone ragging on the album hasn't even listened to it. Give it a chance. It's much better than that piece of garbage Death Magnetic that everyone seemed to be willing to suck James Hetfield off for a copy of. Don't expect it to sound like AfD, though. It's much closer to the UYIs style, but still far from that. If you listen to the album with an open mind, you will not be disappointed.

I just bought the album for $1.99. The cashier was surprised when it rang up $1.99. I was on the fence about buying it but it's just 2 bucks so who cares?

I've never heard the album, but when it first came out there were like four rows from top to bottom with five sections in each row completely full with the cds, and it was like that way for months, so I guess nobody liked the album.

Saying something sucks is an opinion, it doesn't matter if it has sold more copies. Like I think Michael Jackson's music sucks, but he's sold far and away more albums than the bands I love, like Anthrax. It's sort of like how I think Modern Warfare 2 sucks, but my friends say I'm wrong because millions of people play it.

Just because a bunch of people like something doesn't mean it's good. What you think is good is purely an opinion, so telling somebody who says something sucks that they are wrong is actually incorrect. You could say their opinion isn't good, but that would be your opinion. Anthrax is a very unpopular band, and most people would probably think they suck, but does that make it true? No, because I think they're amazing. And when someone likes something, that automatically means that it doesn't suck IN THEIR OPINION.

LET ME COMMENT SINCE I WORK AT A BEST BUY. I'm in control of the stores stock.

When this came out we got 900 copies of the album in on CD and like 15 on vinyl. We sold a total of 3 copies of the album. We literally had 896 copies sitting around for over 2 years. We didn't know what to do with them so we filled an end cap with as much as we could and it stayed like that for that 2 years. The rest we boxed up and stashed in the warehouse (near my desk actually).

We did a "media sendback" about 2 months ago. That's where we pull cds, movies or games, and send them back to a district warehouse where they're redistributed across the country to balance inventories or returned to the vendor. I personally pulled over 600 copies of this album and sent them out. Needless to say they were covered in dust. Considering that best buy was the exclusive retailer of this album and that they bought 1.6 million copies I highly doubt they had to balance any inventory anywhere. They're probably all sitting in their respective warehouses waiting for the offload. Either the record company will buy them back or the majority will end up being destroyed or peddled off to discount retailers and online sale sites.

I will say this. I got to hear this thing and hold it in my hands before it was released. We sent that copy out for product return after we heard how mediocre it was.

As far as the vinyls that we never ever sold. We actually broke most of them and sent them out for product return.

Best buy is honestly the dumbest when it comes to business decisions. This is one of their major ****ups.

This whole fiasco is like atari and their e.t. video game.

I do however find this hilarious. It took them long enough to realize this shit. I'm sure Axl is ****ing extatic about this news. And before he gets on his "lack of label promotion" shit I'll say the label did a great deal to promote. We had signs, posters, huge displays going on for some time in anticipation and release of this. Perhaps he should have toured and not taken 17 years to release a ****ing album. Also some press may have boosted sales buddy.

On another note we sold out of Slash's solo album 4 times and sold off all the special edition copies 2 times.

im not sure if anyone else already said this as i dont have time right now to read all of the previous comments but what amazes me about this is how a band can have a "platinum" album and only sell a little more than HALF a million copies!!!!! wtf?! that is so ****ed up! by that logic its practically determining an albums status by what its EXPECTED to sell as opposed to what it ACTUALLY sells. does anyone else find this messed up? i for one am blown away by this.

And as far as exclusive rights goes let me let you in on that. Best Buy was massively pissed at the amount of money Wal-mart (aka the downfall of humanity) made with the Eagles last album and AC/DC's black ice. The eagles was one thing but AC/DC gave them the snub. Those albums did serious business and made these companies serious money. So Best Buy thought it would be best to do whatever they could for the exclusive to the elusive. Obviously it failed miserably.

Wow! What moron of a purchasing manager pays $8.75 AS A WHOLESALE PRICE per copy of an album on a 1.6 million piece order? For that amount I'd expect to pay $2 per CD. $8.75 is the unit price a mom and pop will pay for a 10 piece order from a jobber, not for a 1.6M piece order straight from the pressing plant!

It's a very good album on it's own, you just can't listen to it thinking about Appetite.. they're two different things from two different time periods. unlike a lot of you I would have been mad if Chinese Democracy sounded like Appetite because it would have been nothing new and not original at all.. I'm happy with what I got and you should stop complaining about Slash not being there.. You want to hear Slash buy his solo album, which is also very good

Chinese is a very good album, at least in my opinion.
You can't listen to it like a 'Old Guns Record' they are some killers songs on there.

There was A Time is ****ing Epic.
The intro for Chinese Democracy the song itself is epic.
Better is ****ing hard.
The ending of Prostitute is also amazing.

And yeah I also loved Slash solo album.
These bitch fights about albums, it's just pathetic. You don't have to like Lady GaGa to acknowledge that she is a good song writer.
If it's not your style, that's OK but if you have a clue about music you can recognize good music when you hear it.
