Guns N' Roses Reunite With Izzy Stradlin Onstage

Guns N'Roses' singer Axl Rose was reunited with estranged guitarist Izzy Stradlin at Download Festival's close on June 11.

Midway through the set, according to NME.com, Rose introduced original member Stradlin for three songs, 'Patience', 'Night Train' and 'I Used To Love Her'. It was only Stradlin's second show back with the band in over a decade, following a shock appearance in New York last month.

But that was not the only surprise instore; for 'My Michelle', the band were joined by former Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach.

Guns N'Roses took the stage half an hour early, but Rose easily made up the time in a series of sensational walk-offs.

After slipping over during 'Sweet Child O'Mine', Rose annnounced that the band were experiencing "technical difficulties" and left the stage for five minutes while a guitarist played an instrumental version of 'Don't Cry'.

The singer had already abandoned the show once before, leaving the crowd with an instrumental version of Christina Aguilera's hit 'Beautiful'. And he threatened to leave the stage after 'Better' if the crowd persisted in throwing bottles. However, they did get to air 'new' songs 'Better', 'The Blues', 'IRS' and 'Madagascar'.

Guns N' Roses' set list can be found at NME.com.

Thats great He actually started the show early! Glad to see him stick it out and finish the show. I wish people would just eazup on the guy. Everyone knows hes a perfectionist and then the crowd expects perfection from him and that just makes things worse.

that's like saying you can put a different guitar player in Van Halen or restart the Jimi Hendrix Experience without Jimi!

While 'a' guitarist? That was freakin' Ron Thal! Who I might like to add is an ever so slightly better guitarist than Slash...

I saw this gig, it was pretty damn good

Axl didn't slip over during SCOM, it was merely a little skid :P And the bassist got hit by a piss bottle, threw his bass on the floor and kicked it towards the crowd then stormed off. Only to come back at the end of the song and apologise and explain he doesn't need to have piss thrown at him :|

And he didn't keep walking off in fits, the whole band kept leaving the stage so that the guitarist (there were 3) could each take solo's (usually instrumental covers of pop songs). He wasn't pissed off, it was just part of the show damnit!

Great gig

Would you stay on stage to have bottles of piss thrown at you? All he said was "If you stay and have a good time thats cool, but if you throw shit Im going home." Good on him.

I agree with you, they were all very talented, but Slash will always be my favorite. But face it, Axl couldn't (and still can't) sing. He's a good frontman and a good lyricist. Not a good vocalist.

And Velvet Revolver is better than Guns 'n' Roses anyway.

On sunday the 11th i witnessed the worst performance i have ever seen. the solos were all messed up. the drummer actually went wrong in paradise city and if a drummer does that he is not a drummer anymore. he also arsed up you could be mine. one of my favourite guns n roses songs.
I regret to say that they were the shitest band of the whole festival for me. Total Garbage performance.

The New GNR may now have a great songwriter, a great frontman, now they just need slash back. Slash is an awesome guitarist because he was so cool. I mean him rising out of the sea in the video for estranged was the coolest thing ever. If izzy persuaded slash, duff and matt to rejoin it would truly be a miracle.

Best. Gig. Ever.

Tommy threatened to leave, not axl, which is fair enough anyway - if some tit is throwing stuff at you, you shouldn't have to put up with that sorta stuff.

That article doesn't tell half the story of that show. It was incredible. And anyway, they didn't start early - they started bang on time, which was better than metallica, who were 45 minutes late the day before.

Axl was an absolute c**t and the crowd boo-d him so much he threatened to go home. How technical is falling on his ass on stage? He just acted like a little kid.

I don't know if anyone noticed, but he called a few members of the crowd f***ing ****s.. and they're his fans!! jesus!

The rest of the band played their hearts out (probably to make up for axl) so my utter most respect goes to them for putting on an amazing show.

You, sir are a grade A idiot. For starters, Axl never smoked or drank or did drugs. He was the only one in the band that was clean. Second, Brain didn't mess up Paradise City or You Could Be Mine, he just plays them different from Steve and Matt. Third why are you complaining? You got to see Izzy ****in Stradlin, even if the rest of the band sucked (Which they don't), that would make the show more than worth it.

Also, that article was absolutely off on everything. First of all, it wasn't a "reunion", it was Izzy jamming with them for 5 songs. Izzy actually did 5 songs, not 3. Izzy IS NOT in the band, he did the same thing at the 4th show in NYC. Don't expect Izzy when you see the band, you'll be let down. My Micelle with Bach wasn't a suprise for Download, they've done it at all but one show so far, both NY and Europe. They actually went on 5 mins early according to most people, not a half hour. The band actually was having technical difficulties. Axl didn't call anyone in the crowd a ****, that was directed at the sound guy for ****ing up. "A guitarist" has a name, it's Ron Thal. The Beautiful solo is actually quite emotional and heart filled. I wouldn't mind being "left with it". It was Tommy Stinson who threatened to leave if the crowd didn't stop throwing piss bottles, not Axl. Aside from those 4 new songs mentioned, they alos played Chinese Democracy

acrocks wrote on 06/12/2006 - 05:31 pm / quote |

Hey, i was at download and yeah ok, things didn't start so comfortably for axl but once they overcame those difficulties, then they were on form and oh yes, fantastic!!! If those idiots who obviously weren't true GnR fans hadn't have been so f*****ing stupid in the first place, then there wouldn't have been all the controversy....anyway bad publicity is still good publicity. Don't Cry solo by the hugely talented lead man.....absolutely bloody amazing. Ron thal too,, plays incredible lead work aswell., both extremely polished!! Big up to GnR, they rocked bloody well, and its been a hell of a long time coming....the 4 new songs were very good too!! Its not there fault the front of the crowd was full of arsholes!!

Velvet Revolver is definatly not better than GN'R, Izzy was the last original member to leave other than Axl, so if anyone should come back, it should be Izzy, cuz Slash is really over-rated, and is definatly replaceable, cuz he's been replaced like 3 times now and everyone puts way too much emphasis on Slash in GN'R anyways, he WAS important to GN'R 13 years ago, during the Use Your Illusion era, but not anymore, sure they play songs he did, but thats it, and it's freaking awesome that Izzy played with GN'R again, and perfection can take that long, and so what if he's late or doesn't show up at all? lots of artists have done that

Shame i couldnt go to Downlaod yesterday and see GNR cause i went to see Bon Jovi instead which was sweet! Was in the golden circle which we got the tickets for free. winterburn69, you say Slash is over-rated? You obviously dont know much about him and GNR. He has been replaced a few times..but has the band been better or as good wihout him? I dont think so. I would definetly say AXL and Slash are the most important or were the most importand assets of GNR. Slash has a unique style of playing the guitar which created that unique sound which we all know and love. And same goes for AXL to. Without slash the sound of the band is different which you can immediately notice. As with most bands, the only thing people notice and give a damn about is the Frontman and the lead guitarist. (AXL, Slash). Unless you have a band were the bassist or drummer is extremely good like Paul Entwistle who was very important for me in The Who. But the other members of GNR were not so much important because of their unique abilitys, but just because thats the line up we are all so fond of.

He has got older like most people do. It has been quite a few years since he was performing.

It wasn't the whole band, it was the two guitarists playing it, one playing chords, other was soloing and playing what would be the vocals notes on the guitar. I'll just say when GnR first went off because of technical difficulties (because the back screen had a loose connection and was ****ing up) that solo was incredible, it was so mellow I wish he played more for a futher 20mins. any body know his name?

Stop being pedantic, hardcore GNR fans are pathetic when it comes to this, the band was finalised with Izzy, Slash, Duff n co! Tracii and people werent in the finalised guns n roses, so actually YOUR wrong!! Stop trying to be a smart arse just because the band before them with Axl Rose in was called GNR too!

Word dude. And to the first person saying Slash wasn't in the original Guns N' Roses, you're kind of retarded. GNRs first album with Geffen = Appetite. Who was on it? Slash, Izzy, Steven, Duff, and Axl. Tracii Guns and Ole Beich were NEVER in Guns N' Roses. Your history of GNR is weak man. Embarrassing dude. Embarrassing.

You wanna know what's really embarrassing? The fact that this has degenerated to petty insults. Retarded? "So basically your gay" And anyway, Ole Beich and Tracii Guns were in the band. The only reason I can see why you can say that they were never in GnR is because they weren't in the famous lineup. In which case, you can't criticise his knowledge of it, because it comes down to opinion. So stop patronizing, and trying to make yourself seem like the oh-so-wise one... His knowledge of GnR seems stronger than yours.

And Ron Thal is NOT overrated!!

THe GNR lineup with Axl, SLash, Izzy, Duff and Steven is not gonna come back again, no matter media says... Steven is NEVER coming back, cause if I recall (please correct if I'm wrong) Steven got kicked out of the band for raping Axl's girlfriend while being under the effect of drugs...
Izzy is more important to GNR than Slash, since he met Axl in their hometown Lafayette, Indiana WAYYY before even Tracii GUns was in the picture. BUt it was the whole lineup on the Appetite for destruction -album that made them such a great band: everyone was in good balance(although I think Steven was a bit simple behind the drums) and the songs ****ing rocked!
And stop ****ing around you guys! Nobody cares which one of you is right or wrong about "what was THE original lineup?!" It's just ****ing childish; so argue about it somewhere else and leave this place for talkin about the actual ****ing column!!(even though this isn't quite right either)
Axl kinda looks like Mark Wahlberg with a wig, in that picture... lol!

Sigh..axl gets blamed for everything once again.
From what i've heard the status with Izzy is going to be much like it was in the early days of VR. He's gonna be there in the background, helping write songs but won't be going on full tours with the rest of them as Izzy hates touring. He'll probably make more one off appearances in the future but at least his craftsmanship will be there.
AlsoRon Thal is a great guitarist, he's not Slash (obviously) but he matches slash in technical ability AND writing ability. So it should be interesting. I'm getting more and more excited about this =]

You were close but what happened aside from his inability to quit heroin was that he gave erin everly a bad hit..she OD'd and was rushed to the hospital...that was pretty much the final straw for axl than steven was fired....As for who was in the line up at what times..it went like this...Izzy and axl started off in Indiana under the name A.X.L.....Izzy moved to L.A. then Axl followed shortly after...he regrouped with Izzy and started Hollywood Rose with Chris webber...that was it...Chris webber left, in came tracii guns...now you got guns n roses....meanwhile slash and Steven were in a band called "road crew" or road dogs I cant remember. They hooked up with guns n roses...but slash wasn't the official lead guitarist right away. Slash just showed up for rehearsels and when tracii would not show up, slash would fill in...eventually tracii split and slash took over...then Duff who was the last member to join...joined....now you got the infamous appetite line up.....the end.

Hahaha, that was funking hilarious. Should have used that idea for Fightstar.
I was near enough first row and I could see Axl having arguments with everybody. 30 minutes in, I was thinking they wouldn't last another song.
Getting Izzy on stage was amazing, though. Made everything better and eventually, the new band sort of won over the crowd.

Axl's an abominal singer, though. He just can't do it anymore.

Thats not what happened. When he slipped at download they put mats down. They came on 7 minutes early not 30 mins. He said nothing about throwing bottles. it was the bassist. He got hit by a bottle of piss n threw his bass across the stage hittin the camera man. then threatened to go home if anyone threw anything else.
I was there. Bell Ends.

I didn't think the show was that good. It just seemed to come across as a G'n'R cover band or the Axl rose travelling circus. Yeah the music was ok, they played the songs well but I saw G'n'R years and years ago which was very very good but this time around it wasn't the same at all. If you watch them and enjoy them, nice one, happy you did, but they are shadow of their former selves.
