John Lennon Sculpture Unveiled

The design of a John Lennon peace sculpture was revealed this week at the Shanghai Expo. Julian Lennon will unveil the full-size, 18-foot high monument in October as part of a two-month-long festival to celebrate John Lennon’s 70th birthday.

The sculpture, called "Peace And Harmony," is by 19-year-old American Lauren Voiers, who told the Liverpool Daily Post that her inspiration came from "combining the power of art and music. I think this sums up a lot about John Lennon and what he stood for. On a personal note, my passion is art but I also love music and I wanted to reflect this in the monument. Both art and music are universal languages."

The design incorporates doves, musical notes, a guitar and a keyboard and, at son Julian’s request, a white feather.

"One of the things my father said to me was that should he pass away, if there was some way of letting me know he was going to be O.K., it was by, in some shape or form, presenting me with a white feather," Julian Lennon said.

No you don't quite get it do you? Music, like art, is a form of expression. Death Metal is just as much of an emotional expression as the Beatles or even Mozart. Because that music is made from emotion. And that music is made to connect with others or express oneself through that music. And if you have to tune down guitars and sound "tough" to provoke what you are feeling, then it is art. You just happen to not like it. And that's fine because like I said, We express ourselves in different ways that others will not be attracted to

I disagree. Music doesn't HAVE to be an expression of emotions. You can write a tune purely on the basis that you had a good musical idea. I think it's fair to say some death metal isn't always wrote to express some kind of emotion. And why should it?

Like it or not all music is art. Even Death Metal. Art is people expressing themselves, and music is another form of expressing yourself. Some people prefer to express themselves through Death Metal. Therefore it is art. And as always, art is open to the viewer/listeners interpretation. That's why some people don't like it. It's the same with visual art. You could say Vince Van Gough was the 'Punk' or 'Death Metal' (though death metal isn't quite as good an example, as it isn't as much of a shock to people these days, as punk was back in the late '70's) of this, as everybody hated his work.

Its funny that you guys are fighting over metal when the article is about John Lennon.....Everybody has their tastes get over it. Although I do agree with some of the arguments that Metal lacks soul, not entirely true but many metal bands do lack soul. I'm not trying to bash metal though, because my favorite band is SOAD, which is considered metal, and my other favorite band is the Beatles. And the examples of soul that people have mentioned is humorous....if you want real soul listen to jeff buckley. besides the point music is art, but we have our own interpretations of art. If you go to an art museum you'll see something that you won't consider art, but other do. Everybody's view of the world is subjective.
