John Lennon's Murderer Reveals Motive Behind Fatal Shooting

John Lennon's killer Mark Chapman has explained why he fatally shot the former Beatle in 1980.

Chapman, 55, who has been incarcerated at Attica Correctional Facility in New York state since being convicted of Lennon's murder in 1981, told the parole board about his reasons for the shooting, reports BBC News.

"I wasn't thinking clearly," Chapman said, according to a published transcript of the interview. "I made a horrible decision to end another human being's life, for reasons of selfishness."

He added: "I felt that by killing John Lennon I would become somebody and instead of that I became a murderer, and murderers are not somebodies."

Chapman also told the parole board that he had drawn up a list of people he wanted to kill. Lennon was top, with actress Elizabeth Taylor and talk show host Johnny Carson also included.

In prison, Chapman works as a porter and a clerk in the law library. He was denied parole for the sixth time earlier this month.

I don't understand how people can say "the beatles suck". It's fine to say "I don't like their music", but they were pioneers in music in many ways. They changed their sound many times and have music that is still relevant today. Lennon and McCartney were master songwriters.

I'm totally fine with being insignificant within the universe as a whole. Way I see it, if you can make a direct, significant, positive impact on at least one other person's life, you're "somebody." Actually, objectively speaking, The Beatles were among the forerunners in the experimentation with the rock band format in music, and while I would never say something so ignorant as "they invented [favourite subgenre of rock here]", without their initial experimentation, rock music may very well have taken a different and alien direction than it has with them. Undeniably, their influence as being a mainstay of popular culture even during their brief flash of existence as a band, has swayed pop culture for decades in ways most people can't comprehend.

So while they didn't invent metal, and while rock music would have evolved without them regardless, they had such a big influence on both musical experimentation and popular culture that it WOULD be fair enough to say that most of the bands we listen to right now might not exist without The Beatles. But that's only because The Beatles were just a fairly big variable in a grander scheme of things.

I don't think I really appreciated the Beatles until I started playing bass. Or until I started writing songs seriously ... I forget which came first. It was about the same time.

Either way, this Chapman thing is old news. This 'information' is literally the exact same reason he gave when he first shot Lennon. For a long time, fans wouldn't even use his name: he was just 'that guy that shot Lennon.' The idea was that since he did it to become famous, they should deny him that fame. Hippies are so naive. Like it wasn't going to be all over the news. That's also why he's still in jail. If you hate your wife and decide to kill her, you could (potentially) become a person that is better at dealing with your anger. Disagreed. Punk was influenced by the Beatles the way that Charles Atlas was influenced by the beach bully's mother. Punk was a reactionary music scene; given enough time, it would have happened against something else. You might was hell blame Chuck Berry, since HE influenced the Beatles.

If you have to call out a single band as 'inspiring punk', it would be The Velvet Underground, we released their first album back when the Beatles were still singing about wanting to hold your hand.

I don't understand how people can say "the beatles suck". It's fine to say "I don't like their music", but they were pioneers in music in many ways. They changed their sound many times and have music that is still relevant today. Lennon and McCartney were master songwriters.

Wrong, because rock music had Chuck Berry, who was a much more "rock" musician than The Beatles. Saying that the Beatles created rock in it's current state is just wrong. One of them was he got mad at Lennon because Lennon claimed The Beatles (or he) was bigger than Jesus. Now it's because he wanted to be somebody. And he also claimed Catcher In The Rye inspired him.

In either case, he knew what he was doing. He could have shot Yoko Ono too but he didn't...he had a single target, he knew what he was doing.

He doesn't necessarily deserve to be let out on parole because he took the life of an innocent person, but with the current state of the US justice system, if he had simply killed Joe Everyman, he'd be free by now. I've listened to their entire discography several times and don't see anything particularly innovative or original about it. I hate Lennon's solo work with a passion. I like McCartney's, and Harrison's is alright.

Although those bands did have influence on the Punk genre, even the guitarist who is probably the one most renowned with Punk, Johnny Ramone, admitted that their songs were influenced by a lot of the 50's and 60's pop songs. Also; one of the main reasons they hired Phil Spector as producer for 'End of the Century' was due to the sucess he had with the beatles, which by the way, was one of Joey's fave bands at the time.

First and foremost, anyone who says that the Beatles promoted experimentation through their music is not entirely true. People seem to forgot the expansive underground progressive rock scene at the time which eventually came to fruition in the late 60's and 70's. That was the real music that promoted experimentation in the rock genre. In all honesty, the Beatles may have actually been one of the first bands to develop the idea of boy bands. That being said, unlike other boy bands of our time eg. say Mcfly lol, they actually experimented a lot more. In addition, if anyone actually listened to more contemporary music from that era other than the Beatles, they would understand that there could have been many other poster boys who could have taken the position the Beatles took up in music, for example the Beach Boys.

I'm not defending this guy on saying the Beatles suck because I like them a lot, but it seems to me like you have never read the Bible. Now, I'm a huge prog fan and I've invested a lot of time into researching it and listening to it. But around the time The Beatles were being among the first western bands to experiment with eastern sounds, bands like Genesis and Jethro Tull were covering Beatles tunes or playing blues-rock. King Crimson didn't even exist as a band yet. The only other real experimentation seen at that time was in Frank Zappa's music, and some of the psychedelic bands. I wouldn't say something as ignorant as The Beatles being the only innovators of their era, but they played a huge role in it.

I was about 15 feet away from this guy about five years ago when I was shadowing a CO at Attica. I was passing by some rooms with glass doors and the officer said "You see that guy, thats Mark Chapman. Looks like he's talking to a priest. You're one of the few civilians that will ever see him". It was just a weird feeling being that close to someone who killed someone so famous...

on a lighter note, an inmate had a guitar and amp in his cell! free room, free food, and all the guitar you want to play, talk about hard time

Haha. Well the punishment is supposed to be being in prison, unable to leave. Prison isn't supposed to be the punishment itself. I'm all for inmates picking up new skills in prison, whether it be a university education or jamming on their guitar. At least it gives them a skill that they can rely upon when (and if) they leave. Imagine how good you'd get with all that time to practice!
