Killers Offended By Green Day

The Killers' Brandon Flowers has criticised Green Day for what he sees as their calculated anti-Americanism, according to NME.com.

In particular, Flowers singled out the track "American Idiot" and the fact they filmed their DVD "Bullet In A Bible", which features the song, in the UK.

"You have Green Day and 'American Idiot'. Where do they film their DVD? In England," the frontman told The Word. "A bunch of kids screaming 'I don't want to be an American idiot' I saw it as a very negative thing towards Americans. It really lit a fire in me."

Explaining he was offended by the set-up, Flowers added: "You have the right to say what you want to say and what you want to write about, and I'm sure they meant it in the same way that Bruce Springsteen meant 'Born In The USA' and it was taken wrongly, but I was really offended when I saw them do that."

The singer added he felt the DVD was a bit of a a stunt. "I just thought it was really cheap," he explained. "To go to a place like England or Germany and sing that song - those kids aren't taking it the same way that he meant it. And he [Billie Joe Armstrong] knew it."

The Killers' frontman said he believed that his band's new album "Sam's Town" is a much better representation of America.

"People need to see that, really, there are the nicest people in the world here!" he declared. "I don't know if our album makes you realise that. But I hope it's from a more positive place."

I've got a few things to say, 1-Milton keynes bowl shows were green day's biggest and best shows ever(I was there) so why not film it here?

Here's what I think. I'm English, I love both The Killers' albums, I don't particularly like Greenday but to be fair I haven't listened to the majority of their music. I didn't take the American Idiot album as gospel truth and don't know anyone who had their minds changed by it alone, it's just another opinion that you as individuals have to decide whether you agree with it or not, I personally think that you can't possibly stereotype a whole f*cking nation. Same goes for Brandon, and I don't think the new album is in any way a failure, or that the band is a one-hit wonder (Hot Fuss is an album full of singles). So what if he promotes his album, I'm sure that's what he was being interviewed to talk about in the first place, and anyone else would do the same if they had any sense and any pride in what they'd created.

i disagree american idot was made to offend and was made to be a middle finger to the establishment. they are a so called punk band and heres a history lesson for you, punk was not started to be come the pop music of the states. it was started as a countermovement to the main culture. So when green day comes out with an album like this they are being true to punk (my personal feelings about them differ). I see what your saying Cameloxen. I agree with most of your political views and I know nothing is ever gonna come from musicians making their political views into music. If flowers would have said this back when American Idiot was released, i think 3 years ago , then i would have nothing to say about this. But to do it when your new album is released is a complete stunt. Also i see alot of people complaining that Green Day hopped on the bash bush bandwagon and that annoys me alot. Green day has subtle political tendencies since Nimrod (read Prosthetic Head) and had even clearer views in in their Warning album. But, at the same time though, it's just a song and Green Day doesn't carry the same political weight as the Clash or Bob Marley. Sort of a waste of time bitchin' about it, but I can see his point. Seriously. If Flowers would watch TWO SONGS MORE into the DVD, at the start of "Holiday" he'd loudly and plainly hear Billie Joe say, "this song is not anti-American.....it's anti-war!" I heard this story on the radio yesterday while listening to Preston & Steve and I thought, "Well I haven't heard from The Killers in awhile" but I also thought, "He's got a point". But at the same time, those who said this guy is doing it for publicity are dead on. The Killers, to me anyways, are the most irritating band I've heard since grunge.
