Kirk Hammett Jamed With Tool In Hawaii

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett reportedly joined Tool onstage during their headlining appearance at the Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu, Hawaii on Friday (August 18).

According to one Tool fan's eyewitness account posted at the ToolNavy.com web site, Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan introduced Hammett by saying, "We have a special guest tonight. He's not [unintelligible], and he's not Elvis. Well, maybe he's their bastard son, Mr. Kirk Hammett." "[Kirk] then proceeded to come out and play guitar on 'Sober'. I've never been partial to Metallica, and for those of you who are, I'm sorry to report that Kirk damn near butchered the song. His drunken so-called 'solo' was particularly sloppy and completely extraneous. Only the band coming back through to thrash the rest of the song out extremely hard saved it. Then he totally tripped out and flustered Adam [Jones, Tool guitarist] by grabbing him for his 'hug' and kissing him on the mouth! Only to return at the end of the show to the stage to perform the 'we're not worthy!' bow on his knees before the guys. At least he realizes."

In other news, a pro-shot video of Metallica performing the song "Creeping Death" at the Summer Sonic festival in Tokyo, Japan on August 12 has been made available for streaming at this location.

I'm not surprised that Kirk screwed up, sure he's good, but he ain't Tool good. Metallica and Tool don't mix, and they shouldn't go together again!!

I don't think that's true. Hell, Tool are a great band but Adam is not a good guitarist, especially not when compared to Kirk. Maybe his solo just didn't sound right with Tool's music because Kirk's style is too different for them but I doubt he sucked that bad. Hahah I wonder if he really kissed Adam? That's so weird.

You guys realize how many people were at the show. Not just the one guy. They wouldn't put it on the website unless they had more than one person tell them about Kirk Hammett being there. There were thousands of people that were there. If it isn't true then one of the people there would have heard about this story and said that it didn't happen.

I smell BS. Tool have only ever had close friends join them onstage so to suddenly allow Kirk doesn't seem very likely. Plus from what I understand Kirk has been sober for some time now. The fact that they were playing sober I believe is some kind of ironic twist conjured up by the poor sap who thought up this load of BS lol.

Not to say Adam Jones can't solo, he most certainly can but, hammett blows the guy away! Kirk apparently doesnt drink much. Anyone who watched Some Kind of Monster remembers when hes talking about surfing and how you cant surf hung over. He seemed pretty adamant about not getting wasted anymore.

I also doubt even if he was drunk he screwed up that badly.

Adam Jones is better guitarrist than kirk(both are real riff masters), but kirk's
solos are more complicated while adam's riffs and progressions are more worked.

I went to the show in question. He was there, but he wasn't drunk. The radio DJ on Star 101.9 was saying that the band was seen with Kirk at a sushi bar the night before, and me and some people up front caught a glimpse of Kirk during the bands opening number, Stinkfist.
The whole thing happened, as described, with Kirk ripping out a long and sick solo (I enjoyed it). I may have been drunk, and evidently blacked out by the end of it, because I don't remember any "were not worthy, or mouth kiss" episodes. What I recall is Kirk played, and then left the stage to enjoy the show from the stage right wing. The dj wrote a blog, and has a live audio recording of the second night on his page. www.malekosroom.com

i doubt kirk would mess up. also i think metallica and tool do mix well. they played together in asia and i heard it was awesome. i saw tool on sunday and it was the greatest concert i ever went to, better than metallica.

Its sweet that tool jammed with Kirk, but what he thinks of the solo and what he thinks of metallica is all that i remember after reading this, and his personal opinion on the matter made me hate this review. I get fu***n angry when some of you guys say adam jones (the guitarist of tool) is bad. if you didn't know, he's the one who writes ALL the music of tool. and thats no easy shit. Kirk's a good shredder and that's all, he can't write music.

Somehow I doubt that Kirk "screwed up" the solo. I mean, that's all he does, is solo. As for it sounding like crap, I'd believe that, seeing as I can't imagine how a Hammet-Style solo could even begin to fit with ANY Tool song (DEFINITELY not Sober). And just because everyone else seems to be doing it, I'll state my personal Metallica VS Tool opinion: The two are too different to compare, technically, but I certainly enjoy everything by Tool more than anything by Metallica.

And I agree with this guy. While most of Tool's music (the guitar, at least) is pretty damn simple (once you get the rhythm right), the greats aren't hailed as greats for playing what they played. They're hailed as greats for writing it. And in that department, Adam Jones is easily the best guitarist out there.
