Korn, SOAD, Ozzy Members Remember Dimebag |

During this past weekend's one-day Ozzfest in Dallas, Chris Steffen of RollingStone.com spoke to members of Korn, System Of A Down and Ozzy Osbourne about their memories of Pantera and Damageplan guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, who was killed onstage at an Ohio concert in 2004.
Jonathan Davis (Korn): "The shit he did, that's what got me into heavy music — 'Vulgar Display of Power'. I was only into Eighties music before that. The heaviest thing I listened to was Skinny Puppy and Ministry, but that wasn't metal. When I heard 'Vulgar Display', I was like, 'Holy shit, what the fuck is this?' The first time I ever saw them live, before Korn was even signed, me and Fieldy [Korn bassist] went, and it was Pantera and Sepultura at Irving Meadows in L.A. They came out, started the first song, the curtain dropped, and me and Fieldy just started crying. We looked at each other and we had tears in our eyes because it was so fucking intense and heavy and sick."
Serj Tankian: " When [System Of A Down] played with Pantera at the Forum, my parents had come to the show, and my parents are definitely not into heavy music at all. They were older, in their late sixties. What they were doing was very special, to a point where my parents, who are not into any rock or metal or any type of heavy music, really got them. I was blown away, and I said, 'Really? You're not just messing with me?' They said, 'No, we love them. You guys were great, but they are awesome.'"
Blasko (bass, Ozzy Osbourne): "The first Pantera song I heard probably would have been 'Cowboys From Hell', which I thought was cool, but I don't think I really got it until 'Vulgar Display of Power'. Then I said, 'Okay, now I get it, now I see what's happening.' When I first heard 'I'm Broken', I thought, 'This is the raddest song ever — the raddest riff.' It just makes me want to break shit. It was like, 'This is the song I wish I wrote.' That was the song where I was just said, 'Fuck!'"
A special one-time only all-star tribute to fallen Pantera/Damageplan guitarist and Texas native "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was held at this year's Ozzfest.
Fan-filmed video footage of Lars Ulrich of Metallica performing Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" alongside Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains), Mike Inez (Alice In Chains), Scott Ian (Anthrax) and Pearl Aday (Ian's fiancée and daughter of legendary crooner Meat Loaf) can be viewed at this location.
Thanks for the report to Blabbermouth.net.

stop complaining...dime deserves all the appreciation and gratitude the world has to offer even if it means paying tribute to him everyday..everyday dimebag followers are born...his music and guitarplaying remains powerful and still inspires to this day..theres times i would reach the point of boredom listening to pantera but it wont take long til you hunger to hear his playing then you feel like shredding the shitt out of your guitar again and again..i dont get that much inspiration from any other guitarist but dimebagPOSTED: 08/13/2008 - 02:53 pm / quote |

Guess what dude. Dime will never die in my heart either, he was a great inspiration but dude enough is enough. Just because i say that and Primus said what he said doesn't mean we didn't like him or whatever it's all about accepting reality and the reality is that he died and is not coming back and you don't need all this public attention and tribute crap which seems like publicity hype(coughRitacough) just to remember him, i can do that in the privacy of my room listening to some Pantera albums or jamming out their songs with my band. They do it because Dimebag has become much more than a man in his death. Dimebag has become a symbol of freedom for metal heads. He is the metal head's John Lennon. POSTED: 08/13/2008 - 06:58 pm / quote |
guitaringnathan
: i love dime to , i admire his music entirely in about every form, and i believe he does need to be tributed because despite what the rs say, dimebag was awesome, his riffs were sometimes complex and sometimes simple but they had a certain feel that it feels so many bands are missing despite how complicated their riffs get.
but that being said, i am personally a little tired of all these dime tributes as well. if you look, truly he was only a guitarist for a band and he did do a little charity work, but people who devote their entire lives to helping people only get 10 second spots on local news casts. at the end of the day thats all he was.
i think we should tribute him every once in a while like we do with rhoads, hendrix, cobain, and so on. but we should also tribute him by takin what we learned from him and pushing it to the next level. i think thats what he would want and not want us living in the past. : People will never ever forget Dimebag, just as people will never ever forget Kurt Cobain. They were both very influentual and when people with that much talent die early in their lives they will be remembered forever.
Now that being said, I don't see a reason for having an article on these bands remembering him, seems like a waste of an article when people remember him everyday.POSTED: 08/13/2008 - 07:19 pm / quote |

Having lost a friend of mine to cancer recently, my mates and i constantly talk about him and miss him dearly. All these tributes made on stage are from dime's friends and colleagues...you would deny them their grievance.
I'm no saying you guys are being cruel, but a death of someone you care about is something you will never get over. You can accept it but you will always miss them.

I love how people are always trying to look bad and mouth off bands and stuff like that. Who cares who is heavier than who...besides all those bands you mentioned don't even play the same damn thing. Stop comparing different genres, obviously thrash metal isn't the same as black metal...WE ALL KNOW THAT THERE ARE HEAVIER BANDS IN THE WHOLE WORLD, people just can't stop babbling about who is heavier than who.
But please, appreciate music as it is, Kreator, Sodom, Possessed, Decapitated, Morbid Angel, Opeth, Scar Symmetry bla bla bla I can go on and on, people have different taste in music, but you know what? Being humble is what makes a great musician, not being virtuous or anything, maybe you can learn from that.
By the way, I feel good for you because you hear heavy bands and you feel like a total badas$ because of that, I really do.POSTED: 08/13/2008 - 08:31 pm / quote |

Amen. Dean are arseholes for what they did with him. A sign of respect would be 2 signature models at most, an ML and a Razorback just for kicks. Milking as much money out of a dead man as they can would be making 33 signature models...OH WAIT.
I remember Dimebag too.. |
Agreed. It's wrong that people are milking his name to make all that money, especially Dean. POSTED: 08/14/2008 - 12:50 am / quote |

i love dime to , i admire his music entirely in about every form, and i believe he does need to be tributed because despite what the rs say, dimebag was awesome, his riffs were sometimes complex and sometimes simple but they had a certain feel that it feels so many bands are missing despite how complicated their riffs get.
but that being said, i am personally a little tired of all these dime tributes as well. if you look, truly he was only a guitarist for a band and he did do a little charity work, but people who devote their entire lives to helping people only get 10 second spots on local news casts. at the end of the day thats all he was.
i think we should tribute him every once in a while like we do with rhoads, hendrix, cobain, and so on. but we should also tribute him by takin what we learned from him and pushing it to the next level. i think thats what he would want and not want us living in the past. |
I definitely agree with that last paragraph. We should still tribute him (and the other musicians you mentioned, because they were all more than just guitarists), just not as zealously or with non-altruistic intentions (I'm looking at you, Dean).POSTED: 08/14/2008 - 01:51 am / quote |

: This is really great. I think another dimebag tribute is coming out. Every band out there misses him and I don't think any of us will ever truely get over what happened except for the people that just don't like him. I don't think they're over doing this remembering dime stuff at all. RIP Dime. Hope there's more tribute's to you to come.POSTED: 08/14/2008 - 02:27 am / quote |

: Agreed on the Dean comment. I have a Dean catalogue from 2004, its mainly focused on the Schenker model and like a few MLs, but ZERO DIMEBAG SIGS!!!
but now deanguitars.com is like the official Dimebag tribute homepage, with like 15 different Dime models. Love how the kiddies go "ooo I got me a razorback, im so metal!" but seriously...
Well I believe there are better dead musos that don't get enough recognition, but hey! Can't mess with the kiddies can ya? Dime tributes work, coz kiddies buy it. its a simple word called "Business".POSTED: 08/14/2008 - 08:24 am / quote |

: I remember being in my Physical Science class in the 9th grade and hearing that some Dimebag Darrell. I thought every1 was saying Diamndback Darrell, come to find out that was his name in the 80's. I first heard Pantera when the school used 'Walk' to introduce the football team at Homecoming. I was like "Who is this? What's the song called again? What album?" And then in summer school I heard CFH and the Domination solo but it was Cemetary Gates that really grabbed me. I HAD to know how he did that squeal on guitar! Now I got his tattoo on my right calve and miss him every day! Thanks, Brother! R.I.P.
