Lenny Kravitz Won’t Join Aerosmith

Cross Lenny Kravitz off the list of potential singers to fill in for Steven Tyler as he takes his two-year hiatus from Aerosmith: The singer — who recently rocked with Aretha Franklin and celebrated the 20th anniversary of Let Love Rule — took to his Twitter to address rumors that he might be joining Joe Perry and gang, saying his friendship with Tyler prevents him from accepting the role if it was offered.

“As much as I am flattered that Aerosmith’s camp would consider me to front the band, Steven Tyler is a family friend, and no voice could ever take the place of his,” Kravitz wrote. “I hope the band stays together. They are classic.”

The Kravitz rumors stem back to comments made by Aerosmith’s former A&R rep John Kalodner to Rolling Stone about Tyler’s potential departure from the band. “I was talking to Marty Frederickson the other night about this just artistically because he co-wrote ‘Jaded’ and worked with them for the last 10 years or so,” Kalodner told RS. “We were talking about how no one can replace Steven Tyler, but the only person he said and I agreed with that could even make Aerosmith anything would be Lenny Kravitz — which was a unique idea Marty had.”

As Rolling Stone previously reported, the remaining members of Aerosmith are weighing the possibility of continuing on and celebrating their 40th anniversary with another singer in place of Tyler, who revealed to the band that he hopes to take the next two years to work on “Brand Tyler.” “We’re going just look at all our options. Steven has made it pretty clear; he wants to go off and do what he wants to do,” Perry told RS. “But the band isn’t going to wait around … Aerosmith is too good a band to sit around and twiddle their thumbs.”

Thanks for the story to Rollingstone.com.

I really don't want to see another singer but Tyler, but I think Lenny could do a pretty good job. I would like to hear him sing walk this way, that would be sweet

We dont want to ruin Aerosmith. Liam Gallagher is one of the worst singers of all time in my opinion.

2 year hiatus? WTF? You don't have that many years left Steven Tyler. If you could get your head out of your ass, you could see that in 2 years you could release 4 albums with aerosmith, do 2 world tours, make more money, then retire to the nursing home.

If any1 but tyler is fronting the band they shouldn't call themselves aerosmith

Gibson Phoney wrote on 12/08/2009 - 05:01 pm / quote |
They should just release an instrumental album, maybe even collaberate with another band. Lets say they could make an album in collaberation with muse or someone then they dont need a singer.

reignofrock wrote on 12/08/2009 - 05:33 pm / quote |
There is no Aerosmith without Tyler. Don't bother trying another singer, I know I wouldn't pay to see anyone fill in.

I agree. When bands do this, it isn't the same band is it? A singer or guitarist are the major things that make the unique sound of the band.

The thing I wonder the most is that if Aerosmith does decide to replace Steven for two years isn't there a possibility he might be pissed about that and decide to leave for good?

Joe Perry sings and gets timbaland to produce. With all the voice effects and beats behind it no one will care about the singing. Aerosmith will be number 1 on pop radio Making every little girl forget about Jonas brothers. Steven Tyler will see all the cash flowing in and come back. BAM. Everybody wins. I could deal with one mediocre pop (probably crap) album if Steven will come back to do another album

So what's happening to this album they were supposedly writing? Are they putting that on hold, or (more likely) did they never even start it and have been lying to our innocent little faces all along?

Gary Cherone should fill in for a tour. Nuno's gonna be touring with Rihanna, so Extreme is gonna be on hold for a while let Gary do his thing. He never really was given a fair chance with Van Halen.

There are some things you can joke about, and some you can't.

No one can fill in for Steven Tyler, ever. He's like Highlander: "There can only be one."

Hungry_Hameds wrote on 12/09/2009 - 05:02 am / quote |
'Brand Tyler' what is he planning on doing with 'Brand Tyler'? Surely that would be something you'd do after 10 or so years with a band, your own thing, and then come back and rock again. But at his age? it just doesn't make sense! If he wants to waste a couple of years then the rest of the band have every right to do what they want, as they all seem to know that there arent that many albums and tours left in them.

Somebody mentioned Axl, now I'm sitting here imagining Axl singing "Walk This Way" with the Vox he used on "Mr. Brownstone".

Wait one moment please as I put on my flame-proof suit:
Okay!
I think Axl could front Aerosmith and do a good job of it.

He never said he was leaving for good and this article doesn't suggest that... in fact he said he was staying at a recent Joe Perry concert. (he also said he was a rainbow, so who knows)

I need to go find it.

replacing tyler in aerosmith would be like replacing mick jagger in rolling stones. it can never be done. better to call it quits now joe before you guys start looking pathetic and desperate. besides, there'll definitely be a reunion in the future so long as it doesn't take 20 years :
