Leona Lewis is set to cover the Nine Inch Nails' 1994 track "Hurt" on her forthcoming EP.
Famously covered in 2002 by Johnny Cash, Lewis will feature the song on "Hurt: The EP", which is set for release on December 9. The video to Johnny Cash's version of the song was named the Best Video Of All Time by NME earlier this year. Scroll down to watch it.
Lewis' EP will also contain covers of "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls and "Colorblind" by Counting Crows.
Originally set for release in November, Lewis' third album "Glassheart", will now be released on March 26, 2012. Lewis' forthcoming album sees songwriting and production from Emeli Sande, Ryan Tedder, Ammo, Fraser T Smith, Steve Robson, Autumn Rowe and Sandy Vee.
Confirmed tracks on the album include "Collide" with Avicii, "Trouble", "Mountains", "Glassheart", "Fire Flies", "Blank Page" and "Sugar".
Why... I bet she changes the lyrics... (although I'd love to hear her say "I wear this crown of shit, upon my liars chair" something tells me the lyrics will be more vanilla than the original.
Not a fan of her but interesting choice, might be worth a listen (although maybe no more than the one).
At least Leona is possibly the most talented contestant to come out of The X Factor. She's got an amazing voice and I'm loving those song choices for the EP to be fair.
Cash's version was amazing, it know its a NIN song but Cash just took it to a whole new level, you can hear the pain in his voice, I dare you to listen without crying. but it doesn't need another cover
I get bored hearing about people discuss Cashs version. Its a boring acoustic cover. NINs has awesome textures creeping underneath it making it the song it is, aswell as Trents great vocal performance.
NIN's version is a masterpiece. Cash's version was great in its own way, but I see no need to remake a song that's already been done right twice.
it's called a cover. Movies are remaked (?)
As well as being guilty of needless pedantry, you're also wrong: a 'remake' according to Apple Dictionary is 'a movie or piece of music that has been filmed or recorded again and rereleased.' Also I think you mean 'remade' (now I'm the pedant).
You know she's just going to make 'Hurt' sound exactly like that version of Snow Patrol's 'Run' that she did. If you ask me, if NIN's version didn't say enough, then Cash's certainly finished it off.
There are technically many other "better" videos out there. But with a fear of trying to sound pretentious the simplicity and beauty of his version of hurt is amazing. The ending is beautiful.
I love Hurt (both NIN and Cash versions) and Colorblind.
I hope she does well with them, they are both amazing songs. If she doesn't do well, then whatever, the originals still exist.
Although I think something along the lines of this true story from my first year at uni:
We were in a pub, and these two male barstaff did an acoustic duo. After the first couple of notes of Under the Bridge, a young lady down the bar exclaimed 'I love this song!...
Cash's version was amazing, it know its a NIN song but Cash just took it to a whole new level, you can hear the pain in his voice, I dare you to listen without crying. but it doesn't need another cover
The quivering in his voice is not from sadness, but from oldness. A common misconception.
please don't. people thinking cash's version was the original already makes me want to beat children senselessly. having whoever the hell this is cover it and younger people thinking this is an original will make me develop a rocket ship so i don't have to live on this planet anymore.
I like the song, and I'll listen to it with an open mind, but I definitely think that if you're going to link to a youtube video of the cover, you should at least link to the original. After all, it is their song originally, no matter how excellent any other interpretation may be.
This is why I essentially avoid covers entirely, most people have already beat you to the punch of recording the cover once you've gained exposure, & there's no need to over do it. The original by Trent is phenomenal, I thoroughly enjoyed The Johnny Cash cover, I'm not against people covering music that influenced & inspired them, I just feel the current material that's out there is enough, but the artist has a right to do it, don't know if putting it on an EP was the best way to go, but who am I.
First Snow Patrol and now this. All she does is sing miserable bloody songs. She's just a depressing jukebox. Good voice, yeah, but no talent or vision beyond that.
You would think if your gonna cover ANY song from a very influential band it would be a more obscure song than Hurt. At least do one that hasn't been heard before. She'd be better off picking a song from Pretty Hate Machine.

So much this. If I hear some kid raving about "Leona Lewis's brilliant new original song" i don't think i can be held responsible for my actions.
I think both versions are amazing in their own way...The NIN version has that awesome purposefully flat chord in the riff, which really makes that version. And Cash's version is just flawless, his voice, the drone note in the chorus, all of it is just amazing. Kudos to this Lewis chick for having the stones to even attempt to make a version that could hold a candle to either of the former covers.
i saw the title and quickly raced to comment,"ITS not a NINE INCH NAILS'S SONG, ITS JOHNNY CASH!! SORT YOUR SHIT OUT UG!"
...but then i was like oh wait no, yeah it was originally a nine inch nails song.. my bad

He's a Green Day fan, that's why.
I am curious to this cover. Never been that big of a fan of Nine Inch Nails or Johnny Cash (never hated them, just not a big fan), but I have heard Cash's version, and I thought it was really good. She better do it justice or else.....or else.....or else I just won't be a happy camper.

some people can't make a difference because of their intelligence, so they do it by their dumbness
Trent Reznor wrote the song and made it amazing, Johnny Cash did probably the best tribute to the song with his cover, i can't imagine this being any where near the standard or quality of Reznor and Cash's version.
Cash's cover of "Hurt" is, I must say, one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Of course, NIN's version is also great, and props to it for being the original. I have nothing against Leona Lewis, other than that I don't like her voice, but I just can't imagine her doing it justice.
On a side note, Between the Buried and Me did a fantastic cover of "Colorblind" and I doubt she'll beat that either.
Can't be doing with this woman. She's obviously a gifted singer, but she seems incapable of singing anything without it descending into melodramatic warbling in an attempt to make it seem passionate. It does my tits in

Not a fan of Leona Lewis, not to disrespect those who are...but why would she even bother? There's already an incredible cover out there (Johnny Cash), so there's really no point in doing this...
We already have two perfect, great versions of this song. We don't need anymore. Trent Reznor/NIN's version was great, and Cash's is arguably one of the greatest covers ever, at least in my opinion. Don't ruin it for us.
ok.I hate that she's covering "Hurt". Been done twice, both amazingly -- it shouldn't be done again, especially by her. But ALSO, "Colorblind"???? please God, no! that is such a deeply emotional and incredible song... I don't want anyone to f**k with that song. NO!
Here's the problem. She will try to make the song sound pretty. It is not a pretty song. It is an ugly song and I don't think she'll be able to do it right.

Or he's a musically oblivious 8th grader.
Or maybe he was jokingly trying to point at that the Johnny Cash's version is infinitely better, to the point it might as well be his own song?
Leona Lewis ruins everything she touches with her incessant wailing, complete lack of subtlety and scant disregard for any form of artistry. Yet she continues to work through every classic song she can find, butchering them and selling their sorry remains to the public, so ignorant morons can ask me "Hey, have you heard that new Leona Lewis song, Hurt?"
In short, stop Leona, for the love of God, stop.
NIN's version is dated sounding, the best thing that ever happened to it was Cash covering it, gave it a whole new lease of life. In a years time no one will care that Lewis covered it and Colourblind, as much as she cant possibly do either song justice, it's good to know that manufactured artists need to release covers because they and their producers run out of ideas for 'good' songs so early...
