Limp Bizkit's Silly Cover Explained

Limp Bizkit set a new creative low when choosing the artwork that would eventually become the cover of "Gold Cobra". Guitarist Wes Borland recently explained that the eyesore of an album cover was completely intentional.

You may or may not remember report on "Gold Cobra" being nominated as the worst album cover of 2011 by Popcrush.com, but just to re-iterate - we’re not the only ones who thought it was laughable. In a recent interview, Wes Borland told Artist Direct that the ridiculousness of the album’s cover was a conscious decision:

"We were thinking of Gold Cobra as a horror movie. That’s where the album cover came from. As far as the art goes, I was thinking of Frank Frazetta-type of images with the giant snakes and monsters with scantily clad really sexy girls under a guy with a sword. It’s that Conan-looking Frazetta art. That’s where a lot of the inspiration for the art came. I put it through my retard filter and it came out like it did on the album. If I had to compare Gold Cobra to a movie, I guess it would be 'Jaws' [Laughs]."

Borland went on to say that a new Black Light Burns album is already completed, but he is waiting until he can focus his attention on the project fully before releasing it - which will be when his time touring behind "Gold Cobra" is complete.

Gold Cobra was everything it was meant to be, and everything it should've been. The raunchy, corny, perfect blend of 90's nu-metal and rap that I could ask for in this day and age.

Also looking forward to new BLB too. That first album was spectacular.

I hate Limp Bizkit (the music anyway) and totally agree (never really gave it much of a chance) - this made me laugh out loud, as well - but there's no place for this on a news page, really

This isn't the first time. This is far more tame than that Evanescence music video article that bashed pretty much everything about the band. I agree. It's poor journalism.

I think their longevity is a symptom of the hate towards them really. If people kept quiet they'd have died out a long time ago. Worth a chuckle when you think about it.

Obvious bias is obvious, and also ironic since my favorite song on Gold Cobra is Shark Attack. I was never a huge Limp Bizkit (or nu metal in general) fan, and honestly I first listened to the album as a joke but it was surprisingly decent. LB doesn't deserve all the blind hate they get.

I like the album. Not as good as Chocolate Starfish, but still very enjoyable and fun.
But it was missing a lot of that dark melodic stuff that I like about Wes' guitar work. Only three songs(Walking Away, Loser, and Angels) were kinda in that style. However, now it's obvious that he saved all that good dark stuff for Black Light Burns. I just can't wait, bring it on!

I have always been a Limp Bizkit fan, and I was really excited about the new album. I was surprised at the response it got, so many people jumped on boat and started to praise Limp Bizkit. I thought the insturmentation of Gold Cobra was absolutely great. It was the instant reminder of that style Limp Bizkit had in the 90's, but Fred just didn't really bring everything to the table for me. He had his moments on the CD that were great, but as a whole I hope they continue to make music.

Point #1. I'm stoked as hell for the new BLB album. I'm so glad LB didn't affect that band.

Point #2. "Wah wah, Limp Bizkit didn't write serious, emotional music that pulls me through the tough times in my life." Stop bitching, reviewer. Since when was LB a band that tackled life changing issues? If you expected this album to be world alteringly deep, you're even more oblivious than your Jaws reference leads us to believe you are.

Point #3. Anyone who knows anything about Wes knows he's got an insane, tongue-in-cheek type of humor. If you thought this album cover was a serious work of art, you're out of your mind.

I must take back half of my previous comment. Ultimate-Guitar just borrowed this article from another website, so I'm sorry for calling bad journalism on their part (just for this article, many others are still guilty of terrible journalism). But hey, here's a thought: why not cover your own stories and write your own articles other than "The End of the Week as We Know It", which isn't even a news article. If I were guilty of producing middle-school newspaper-worthy stories, I would be doing everything I could do to fix it. The only reason I visit this site anymore is for tabs and getting a good laugh from these terrible news stories.

Who are you to say that? I thought that joke was hilarious. Limp Bizkit is a freaking joke, and everbody in here, including you, know it. I just think the joke added a humorous touch to the article. If you didn't like the joke, you can always just take the news as it stands for itself, and not get so angry about a guy joking about something that is (or at least should be) a universal truth.

Face it Wes Borland, the artwork is nothing more than a massive trolling exercise to sell more records. Gold Cobra and the album before it are equally mediocre, yet people hardly realize the album before it even exists. Basically, Limp Bizkit has settled for capitalizing on the shitty image critics have given them. Without such a lame cover, we would hardly realize they still exist.

And while some the information in the article is informational, most of it is just opinion and speculation. That's not news and should not be in the news section.

If this were in the review section, however, the author's opinion could be summed up with the same tone conveyed, just as rationally and professionally, in two words: This sucks.

I hate to be "that guy" (no I don't), but Limp Bizkit will die, probably in the next 30 years, because they are getting on in years. As a popular band, they are already dead, but in hate-comedy they live on.

UG has bands it loves and bands it hates. Iron Maiden is one they can't get enough love in for. Megadeth is the same. Unfortunately NO ONE can love Limp Bizkit.

Wow, you guys are serious about your journalism huh. I actually wrote that article for my own site Banana1015.com. UG copied it verbatim and posted on here, which is fine by me. But you should also note it is not their writing or opinions, they're mine.

This was actually a follow up to a story we'd done previously about the album cover being voted worst of the year.

BTW I'm aware that opinion based journalism is generally frowned upon. Sometimes I inject some opinion on an insignificant story like this to make it interesting. If you have such a boner for hardcore professional journalism, I hear there are a billion other sites and publications where you can get it.

My friend, your spelling is better than mine, that's for sure. The difference between us is that you'll have to Google the previous sentence to understand it and to even know what language it was written in... BUT, we do have a thing in common: we are rock music fans.

The only thing i do not understand is why do you write articles (but you're not actually a journalist) and they make news section (but they're actually just a personal opinion based on anything besides your musical preferences). You and your article suck. That's my judgement. But hey..who am i to judge your shitty useless job, right? well, i don't have that right, and you too have no right of doing it. Grow up and learn, and let people judge music, limp bizkit or whatever for themselves.
