Marilyn Manson: 'I Would Win A School Shootings Grammy' |

Marilyn Manson has hit out at the media furore that unfairly surrounds him when young people commit acts of violence in America.
The shock-rocker was speaking about his reunion with bassist and songwriter Twiggy Ramirez and said it’s important the name Marilyn Manson is synonymous with his musical output rather than the unjust links to tragedies like the Columbine High School massacre.
The 39-year-old says: “For Marilyn Manson, it seems to have become about the death toll, because we get blamed for every act of violence. They don’t have a Grammy award for school shootings, but I guess I would get one if they did, whether I asked for one or not.
“It’s good to have my partner back, who was the only person able to stare all of that in the face and not be afraid of it. He and I are like brothers in that when we’re together, we’re not afraid of anything. I think that’s how we’ve made our best music,” reports the Boston Globe.
Manson’s was blamed by some in the aftermath of Columbine for the shootout as it was thought that both Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were fans of his music. A point that was later contended.
Thanks for the info to GIGWise.com.

: I love the man, but he just plays favorites with whoever is with him. There is no reasoning to his quote that Jeordie was the only other one who wasn't afraid of anything. And as for Jeordie making his best music, he said that about Skold too.POSTED: 01/28/2008 - 12:46 pm / quote |

: not that i blame him for the shootings or anything but i cant see why he sounds surprised. hes lyrics seem to promote hatred of things like religion when it is in fact the establishments that cause all the trouble, not the religion itself.

What's wrong with having an opinion? I'm not a fan of his music, but just because his beliefs aren't mainstream doesn't make them wrong.POSTED: 01/28/2008 - 02:24 pm / quote |

: hey man your right everyone should be allowed to voice their opinion. And im not trying to cause an argument, but in my opinion he is blatantly insinuating that people with beliefs are slaves to their religion. whatever way i look at that, it seems like abuse of freedom of speech to me.POSTED: 01/28/2008 - 02:43 pm / quote |

: Manson is a good musician, he loves pissing people off! That's just him, you can't take him serious when he does that It's all a joke to him! And everyone has a right to an opinion, atleast he doesn't try to convert everyone or tell them what to believe It's just him an the music, He's not trying to force you to believe anything. I respect this guyPOSTED: 01/28/2008 - 02:51 pm / quote |

: Yet another problem with the fanatic Christian population of The USA. Fanaticism in any form is wrong. If you devote yourself too much to anything, it really can drive you off the deep end.POSTED: 01/28/2008 - 03:47 pm / quote |

: Well Manson does have the freedom of speech, and you gotta take into consideration that although he is a very intelligent man, he is also filled with plenty of hate, who, like EnterIbanez said, loves to piss people off, especially the the mainstream and hardcore Christians who make accusations such as saying "oh, there was a school shooting. This must be the work of Marilyn Manson!"
I'm not a huge huge fan of him, but I actually do quite love a lot of his music.POSTED: 01/28/2008 - 04:06 pm / quote |

: You know the only reason he does get this attention is because MTV put him out in that shock rock spotlight and thats the only artist the media knows whos "insane" You dont hear anything about black metal being put out there when their lyrics are all about hate and killing and sh*t like that, but thats only because its not maintstream like Manson is. But it's very good move on his part that he doesn't seem to ask for this kind of attention, but he sure is taking it for what its worth by making comments like this.POSTED: 01/28/2008 - 04:33 pm / quote |

: This is a really interesting topic. It seems that a lot of people consider it wrong to express hate. Johnny Mathis (right spelling?) helped people express their love through his music. Early Red Hot Chili Peppers stuff helped people express their repressed sexuality. In a similar way, I think Manson is helping young people to deal with the anger that so many young people feel towards their flawed society.
Hate is not a virus thats going cause bad things to happen, its a natural human emotion.
Pretending that you have no hate when you really do, thats what damages a society. I think Manson is desperatly trying to relieve the fear that American youths have of their anger.
"I can't be angery, thats evil" seems to be far too common attitude impressed on American youths. The bottleing-up creates an unhealthy tension in a society which usual bubbles out through some confused teenager who can't understand the wolrd around them. Thats when bad things like high school shootings happen. This tension is something that manson senses, and he's tryig to calm it before it bubbles out in even worse ways. I think he's one of the few people really doing the right thing to prevent highschool shootings and the like..
..just my opinion, but is anyone with me on this??POSTED: 01/28/2008 - 04:55 pm / quote |

: If Manson wants people to stop blaming him for shit like that, he should stop making pronouncements like this to remind the world how badly he's been wronged. For a guy who claims not to care how others view him...
Well, this isn't the first UG article I've seen written solely about some quote by Manson in regards to how people couple him with these things. Maybe they'd forget to if he didn't keep on reminding them, hm?POSTED: 01/28/2008 - 05:10 pm / quote |

: ^Because people keep asking him about it, he has to talk about it. It's stupid he was blamed for it though. Just because he voices his opinion... He has freedom of speech just like the rest of us. If you ever listen to the man talk, he's brilliant... Just because he doesn't believe in God and says it that doesn't make him a bad man. Oh well.POSTED: 01/28/2008 - 05:19 pm / quote |

thirdeye_15 what you've just said is one of the most idiotic things I have ever heard. I disagree, i think he knows what music is really about. But if you read the end of the article, it says that the Columbine boys weren't even definite fans of his music.. And did you just tell Manson to get the facts straight about what the lyrics mean in his own music? Music is interpretive art, but I'm pretty sure the artist isn't just WRONG when he thinks a song means something..POSTED: 01/29/2008 - 07:22 am / quote |

I mean, most of the people of america would forget about that that guy was blamed, if he could stop talking about that. POSTED: 02/15/2008 - 06:08 pm / quote |

: I think people blame Manson because they don't want to face the real issues here. If I recall correctly, these shootings were performed by kids who were rejected and alienated. If society wasn't so mind****ed, and these kids had been befirended/treated better or maybe if someone had taken the time to find help for them and whatnot, there's a posibility they wouldn't have done what they did. Obviously, this is only scraping the surface. I do not in any way support these shootings, as I think they are a horrible idea of a solution. But at the same time, these kids were probably pretty desperate, and maybe they had been mentally ill....I don't know all the details, but I think what it boils down to is a lack of respect in society. Although I fully believe that giving people a good Fu*ck You is healthy (and hella fun, who can even deny that? haha), and that expressing yourself and pissing people off is great... but when you're really, really hurting people you don't know if they're just going to take it with good graces, whether they'll be broken and cry, whother they'll use it to make themselves stronger people.... or whether they'll snap and do something drastic.
Now, as for the Manson thing....obviously, he's an easy target. I'm sure there is a possibiblty that if someone listened to angry music, they could interprate it the wrong way and be motivated to go shoot someone...but it's pretty unlikely, imo.And the key thing there is interpretation. Whether music is good or bad, it depends on that exact thing. Besdies, compared to some music, Manson is tame. He's got some good, pretty provocative messages, and I admire his art and stuff.....but people need to see it for what it is-A GIMMICK. Not that there's anything wrong with it being a gimiick, people just need to realize it, that's all.POSTED: 02/15/2008 - 10:30 pm / quote |

: Let me preface this by saying I don't respect Manson as a musician and I don't consider him an artist. He's commercially driven, fake and obnoxious...But,
We can't, as a society, hold "artists" responsible for the decisions of psychopaths. Just because Mark David Chapman had a copy of "A catcher in the rye" with him when he killed lennon doesn't mean that Salinger is responsible for his death. There are mentally unsound people in our society and if the choose to listen to some garbage that manson puts out and go postal it's not his fault. Sure if he sounded like Cher maybe his audience wouldn't be psychopaths (or maybe they would), but it's not his responsibility to censor himself. POSTED: 02/16/2008 - 06:14 pm / quote |

Usa is so strange with all the shootings and stuff! Thats the impact of the media who promote nothing but violence and fear (not movies, news,tv shows...) Scavengers of human sorrow thats what the media are! I never understood why there are so many shootings in schools in US? Last week 3 or 4. Its sad! Im glad i live in Europe!

Erm... "abuse of freedom of speech..." What are you talking about? I guess by abuse you mean aggressively assaulting religion, or something? If that is not abusing freedom of speech, then shouldn't religions assault on everything that is "evil" be considered abuse of freedom of speech (to the extent that the assault is expressed verbally)?POSTED: 08/09/2008 - 01:59 am / quote |
