Mars Volta Compare Being In At The Drive-In To Taking Crack

The Mars Volta's Omar and Cedric have compared their time in At The Drive-In to a "first sexual experience" or "the first time taking crack."

Speaking to Gigwise at Mercury Records HQ in West London, Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala said they're pleased to have forged friendships once again with their ex At The Drive-In band mates, but iterated rumours of a reunion are ill-founded.

Putting the record straight, front man Cedric said: "(The reunion rumours surfaced when) we took time to bury the hatchet with the other members. There had been a lot of shit talk, at least on my behalf, and I had stuff that I wanted to say. I wanted to be friends with the guys again."

He continued: "(A reunion) couldn’t happen any time soon because we have so much Mars Volta material."

Elucidating further, guitarist Omar added: "We’re smart enough to never say never as you don’t know how life is going to happen. It’s like your first girlfriend, you learned amazing things together, but do you really want to open that can of worms?"

Despite quashing ideas of a reunion (for now), Omar has nothing but fond memories for his At The Drive-In days: "The thing with At the Drive In was the excitement of the first time. Like the first girlfriend or sexual experience, you can never recreate that moment.

"You can have other amazing highs and learn all sort of things, but there is nothing like the first time when you don’t know what the fuck is going on. There’s nothing like the first time coming to Europe, nothing like the first time being on tour, or putting out a record. The first time smoking crack."

I'm not usually a fan of reunions, don't like moving backwards and they never turn out as good as the original, but in this case Mars Volta have floated so far into the ether that their music has become impenetrable. I ATDI reunion might bring these too back down to earth.

cedric and omar are basically just a couple of ****s really. i've read interviews where cedric pretty much said he hated what he did in atdi and that people are wrong for liking them. they show nothing but contempt for their fans.

Have you ever been to an actual punk show? In a basement? Where the singer spits on the crowd, throws a chair at them, and tells them to **** off? Have you ever seen a GG Allin video? ATDI is an unexperienced wet rag of a band that came from boredom and lack of comparisons. Anyone that leans to ADTI needs to lean quietly. Asking Omar and Cedric to play ADTI again is comparable to asking Bach to play chopsticks. Cedric and Omar hate ADTI because ADTI creatively sucks, who wants to listen to teens play instruments to a tenth of the instruments potential? Who the **** wants to hear a musician play down their ability... ADTI... get the **** outa here with that teenage angst shit, we're onto heavier and better times. Omars left middle finger has more talent than all of ATDI summed together and multiplied by 100.

There was very little angst in it, as some of there songs had socio-political connotations, odes to dead friends, and all the other songs were just strange acid jazz lyricism.

1/10th of the instruments potential? You do realize that by putting a cap or limit on an instrument, you kill experimentation and the splendor of mystery. Music is a vast and infinite concept.
