Sir Paul McCartney recently spoke with BBC Radio 4 about an unreleased Beatles song recorded in 1967 that he’s pushing to finally get released.
"Carnival Of Light", the 14-minute experimental track recorded for and performed at the Million Volt Light and Sound Rave, an electronic music festival, was never released to the public and in McCartney’s own words, "the time has come for it to get its moment."
"
I like it because it's The Beatles free, going off piste," said
McCartney in regards to the song’s unique sound. "
I said all I want you to do is just wander around all the stuff, bang it, shout, play it, it doesn't need to make any sense. Hit a drum then wander on to the piano, hit a few notes, just wander around. So that's what we did and then put a bit of an echo on it. It's very free."
McCartney reportedly tried to get the song released in the '90s for The Beatles’ Anthology releases, but was outvoted by the rest of the band. "I said it would be great to put this on because it would show we were working with really avant-garde stuff," he says.
McCartney is again trying to get the song released in some form, but he’s going to need the permission of Ringo Starr and the estates of John Lennon and George Harrison to do so.
