Metallica: 'Best Band On The Planet'

Metallica were named Best Band On The Planet at the Kerrang! Awards, beating out the likes of Slipknot, The Darkness, H.I.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers and Blink-182, according to Scotsman.com. Velvet Revolver, won Best International Newcomer, while The Darkness were named Best British Band. The spandex-clad rockers also won Best Live Band for the second year running.

Kerrang! said The Darkness richly deserved their double win. "They've sold more records, played to more people, been on the cover of more magazines and won more awards than anybody would have dreamed of just 18 months ago, and it's all thoroughly deserved for the band who gave rock back its sense of fun," said the magazine.

"Spirit Of Rock" Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian has commented on winning the award.

"Comrades, we won at the Kerrang awards!" Scott writes on the group's web site. "They gave us the award for 'Spirit Of Rock' which is given to a band that has changed the face of music and has been a major influence on others. It was really cool. The event itself is huge. I had no idea it was so big. They had a killer video presentation showing clips of our whole career, from 'Madhouse' to 'What Doesn't Die' with a voiceover giving our history. Rob and I had no clue that we were getting this. It was kept secret from us the whole time. I thought we were nominated in a category with other bands so when they announced this award and said this year's winners etc. etc. I realized they had picked us for the award. Rob and I went up and I gave a very excited and brief thank you speech and then we were whisked off to the press room for all kinds of TV and radio. It was really cool to be recognized by a magazine that I've been reading since before Anthrax. I'll have a more in-depth report in the new [Alpha Mail online column] I will write on the plane home tomorrow!"

The organizers of the Kerrang! Awards ? held Thursday night (August 26) at The Brewery in central London (read story) ? laid on 14,200 bottles of beer, 150 litres of vodka and 1,000 shots of absinthe as part of the refreshments.

    yeah i know what u mean man, singing is hard work to do so i guess that is a factor but its not liek james really has to consentrate to get his voice. his voice sounds like he's in a porno dirtytalking. second, the one solo is the perfect example of why kirk hammet is one of my least favourite guitar players. he won't step outside the box. he sticks to 3 scales religiously (except in that fag ass gay album i just won't even start on). i doubt alot of people will agree with me but sticking that closely to the same scales over and over again is boring, it shows a lack of creativity, and it shows what a prik kirk hammet is.

    ok, slipknot have been around a few years. nice point dipshit. see u might have missed an artical, or neglected to read an artical on the ug news where mick tompson talks about his playing. though slipknot have only been around for a few years, mick tompson has been playing guitar for 20 years of his life this year. he really got into hendrix stuff...well this story is starting to sound pretty similar to how kirk hammet started. only a few points. kirk hammet had way less expierience when he joined metallica then mick into slipknot. kirk hammet got actually into playing guitar cuz he thought it was kool hendrix didn't have to watch while he played. see where these 2 differ is that kirk went and took lessons for his whole guitar life before metallica. mick didn't, he was self taught. also, kirk hammet didn't do shit for metallica but bring tehm down. the one man who should get credit for creating thrash guitar is dave mustain. Mick wrote all slipknots guitars from square one, created his own style of drop tuned shreds and interesting octaves, and never let himself fall into the category of conventional metal guitar. mick also is very well trained in many different musical theories, including country, rock, metal, blues, ect.

    secondly, u stupid ***, did anyone say theres nothing to singing and playing at the same time? if u read, i said it IS hard to sing and play, even to do what james does, but it doesn't change the fact that james hetfield sings like a hounddog who just got shot in the leg

    ^im not quite sure you know this...but without metallica, there probably wouldnt be a slipknot, without metallica alot of the nu-metal bands wouldnt be around. Metallica is quite possibly the most influential metal band on the planet, if you look up alot of artists influences a good majority list metallica.

    As for the Master of Puppets riff, some of the best most well knows riffs around are very simple to play, ex. Iron Man, Smoke on the Water, Highway to hell, crazy tran, even duality is a very easy song to play. Sometimes the easiest riffs are the most well known.

St. Anger really brought them a little bit down the ranks of greatest band. There are plenty of other bands better than them.     i think green day have contributed more the music than most people think. sure they paved the way for bands like simple plan (of whom i despise), but that doesnt mean their a bad band and their influence can't be denied. You've gotta give them that.

    As for Metallica being best band on the planet, in my opinion...that's a bit of a stretch. Their probably in the top 10, but not number 1.

    And will people stop ripping on the Darkness!?? So what if the singer sings falsetto and wears some "fruity" cloths. If you cant get beyond that, what the hell are you listening to music for. Listen to the guitars, the lyrics are humorous, and the vocals arent bad once you get used to them. They are currently one of the best new rock bands out there, youve gotta give 'em that.

    Metallica should have won the award in 1991 after the "Black Album" when they actually were the best in the world. I'm a huge fan of everything Black and before, but after that Metallica really went downhill. They are NOT the best band on the planet at this moment. I had Chili Peppers in my mind for the award before I even saw that they were nominated. Because besides Metallica (I'm talking out of the nominated bands), they are the only band whose members are all extremely talented. There is no weak link in Metallica or Peppers.     ps. ok kirk hammet is a good guitar player. yeah i said lots of shit about him but it pisses me off when people call slipknot untalented. there not m,y absoulute favourite band but still there really talented. they don't have much at all for leads or solos, and yeah all the guitaring is drop tuned shreds but think about it. there not a big lead band. they have 3 drummers, bass, turntables and shit. there musioc is about heavy rythem and experimental music, not conventional leads. i don't know what dipshit at kerrang decided to put those bands up for best on the planet. none of them deserve it. if someone had to win it shoulkd have been rhcp. i don't listen to them at all, but still they appeal to the biggest audience of them all. gay crap like blink 182 though doesn't deserve the time wasted typing that name.

    man, if u look around today, everyone's getting back into zepplin, ac/dc, and other old 60's 70's bands liek the stones, sex pistols, a whole lot of stuff. so basiocly this new genberation of rock/thrash bands is inspired by the older bands, not metallica. and if its not the old bands that inspired them, the general fact is that most of these new metal bands are "nu metal", along with some black metal and death metal. the nu metal bands got there whole style of playing from TOOL, even if they liostened to metallica *** if that swayed their music writing as much as tool did. and all the black metal/death metal bands listened to other metal, like twisted sister, venom, alice cooper, sabbath, not metallica. then u can't forget grunge so basicly metallica had their biggest influence in the 80's with garage thrash bands that never made it to the top. today metallica has a fan base of the origional fans, of guitar players who loved their playing, or poser trash liek we have today who know about 5 songs from them outside of st anger.

    nu metal is inspired by thrash, so is black and death metal, it all stems from a harder metal, if you listen to classical metal like black sabbath you will see its not very heavy.. at all.. and if you believe nu metal is the predominate style today then your not looking..

It's not all that diferent then metal the only real diference is slightly less heavy guitaring, faster drumming, and in most cases the absence of solos, although a lot of punk bands are at least trying to but in a small amount of soloing. Personally i didn't use to like punk but this summer me and a friend of mine went to warpped tour and it blew my mind.     the thing about that is Scruufer is those bands are long gone by now, most of them at least. People just need to get over the fact the 60's and 70's are over and once they can do that they can recognize some of the more talented artist today like Muse, Jimmy Eat World, Thrice, Dashboard Confessional....and so on

    The reason everyone is bashing metallica is st anger. If you have bashed metallica listen to the Master of Puppets album, then come back and tell us what you think, Blink 182, HIM and the darkness shouldnt have been nominees for best band, insted of them 3 it should have been System of a Down, Slayer and Nirvana.

    Still, what went wrong at the awards? Where was SYSTEM OF A DOWN!!!! They deserve at least 2 awards, and one could have been the best band on the planet.

    The Cure Is one Of the Bands in to 80's who helped create Alternative music but it was diffrent then. it was slow and good The just arnt a huge popular band anymore even though their new cd they just put out debuted in the top 10 around the world. But they arnt a band who gets alot of airplay on the radio becuase they arnt what the stupid punk fags wanna hear they are good music and they arnt played on MTV well.... because MTV is either Reality shows or rap soooo Look it up and listen to The Cure They havnt sold out and changed their style of music 2 appeal 2 the masses they are the same and still one of the best bands ever

    Without Metallica there would be no real metal. Metallica came out in their street clothes and played. then anthrax and slayer and megadeth came and started playing. Black Sabbath made metal Metallica perfected it and Anthrax, Megadeth, and Slayer backed it up. Then other bands came into the scene. so Metallica does deserve the best band on the planet award.
