Metallica Guitarist: No Plans For New Album

Artisan News Service caught up with Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett at Jeff Beck's recent tribute concert to Les Paul at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York.

When asked for his thoughts on the upcoming "Big Four" dates featuring Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax, Hammett said:

"Well, it's gonna be a lot of fun. It's gonna be like class reunion for all us heavy metal guys. So we're all looking forward to it — looking forward to hanging out and talking and reliving old memories and battles and all that good stuff. It'll be pretty exciting, though."

Regarding when fans can expect to hear a new album from Metallica, Hammett said:

"We don't have any immediate plans. We are more concentrating on just finishing this tour. We'll finish it in November with a bunch of shows down in Australia and then we're gonna take a short break."

Watch the Artisan News Service report from the Jeff Beck tribute concert to Les Paul: Video 1, Video 2.

Thanks for the report to Blabbermouth.net.

Of course they're going to make a new album, he's just saying this so they have no pressure as to when it's coming out :P Also can't wait till they come down under in November. First post?

Don't worry guys...we will see a new album in about 5 years and it will sound like St. Anger. I love Metallica. I know people will rip me on this but, i wasn't that impressed with their last album so I really don't care that they, "don't have any immediate plans."

Dear UG,

Just because Kirk Hammett says that Metallica has no immediate plans for a new album doesn't mean there are no plans at all. Yes, there may be a new album in the future, but we don't know when. So, the title of this article needs to be changed.

I don't see how this title is misleading at all.... they have no plans for an album right now.

UG is not making any claims into the future, just talking about this present moment.

And quite frankly, although I absolutely love Metallica up to the black album, and I thought Load and Reload were solid albums in their own right, since St. Anger and Death Magnetic I've lost complete hope in the band.

I'm honestly really happy to hear this, I don't want to seem make themselves look like idiots again and James tell everyone the album's gonna be a comeback when it's just more blues-sludge-metal crap instead of their old, fast stuff. yeah a songwriting pouring his heart into a song about his mother's battle with cancer that she lost is pathetic. Close minded people who say music sucks just because it isnt their style, now thats pathetic. You might not be in love with all of their songs but despite what the people who say that cry sellout say, Metallica have always done things their way and released music that they wanted to make. Taking risks, evolving as a band and putting yourself in the line of fire without compromising your creativity is something to be respected in the music industry... and to think some uneducated critics praise an "iconic thrash" band that released the same album this year that it did in 1983 with the same cliche gore titles.

yeah, every time someone in metallica moves there's a news article about it.

Even though death magnetic wasn't incredible I still appreciate the step in the right direction. I firmly believe it's the best metallica has done since 1987. The only real issue with death magnetic is that james' voice is awful now. his rasp is gone. Other than that there were 8 minute songs with strings of harmonies and tons of riffs. Definitely not bad.

I agree with the very first comment. Kirk is being smart and not letting the press pressure them by always asking about WHEN the new albums coming out and WHEN are samples available. They will have at least 1 more album...i mean look at the band Kiss, they been around longer and still make albums. Metallica will more than likely make at least one more.

Anybody who gets offended by other people's opinions is immature. When he said it was pathetic, do you believe he genuinely thought that he was speaking on behalf of absolutely everybody in the entire world?

Learn self-control, and get beyond just reacting to others.

Somebody please tell me how this is misleading, please tell me what the title should be.....Kirk even said it, they do not plan to do an album now. Just because they do not plan to do it does not mean they are not going to do it, it just is not happening now.

Plus they are getting up there in age, and they have families and kids now. so don't be surprised if they do not make a new album. That and they made 9 albums with plenty of music. Not all of which are great but most of them are (in my opinion).

That was ONE song out of 9 albums that was over 10 years ago and everything they came out with afterward was not at all country. You fail

Wow. So much Metallica hate around here. Must be the cool thing to do these days.

Death Magnetic has become one of my favorite Metallica albums. I recently re-discovered St. Anger, and although I hated it the first time around, I actually like it now. I think of it more as a Metallica "side project."

I'm not sure why people would be happy at the notion of them not making another album... if you don't like them, don't listen. There are LOTS of albums put out every day that don't suit my tastes. But I don't celebrate when the artist decides they're not thinking about their next album.

Hell... why would you even click on this article if that's how you feel?

What's with all the hating on Death Magnetic? I thought it was a great step toward their old sound and a giant leap forward from St. Anger. You all bitch and whine about how pathetic St. Anger was (understandable) and they give you Death Magnetic which was leaps and bounds toward their old stuff (which they'll likely never reach again, for Christ's sake they're in their late 40's) and all you can say is, "Death Magnetic was crap, what a horrible album." Okay, so the sound was compressed but would you rather have had another St. Anger?

Personally I thought Death Magnetic was a great step in the right direction and I'll be patiently waiting for your next album.

I gotta agree with you on Death Magnetic, not a very likeable album, but i personally feel that St. Anger was an amazing record, just ahead of its time. The songs arent super thrashy, but they still rock pretty hard. Everytime i listen to it, i get right into it like it was my first time hearing it. Rag on me all you want UG, which is probably what is going to happen, but St. Anger was still a great album.

Wrong. Just because they made a personal song doesn't mean they suck. They can write whatever they want. But, James Hetfield isn't Metallica. Metallica is a band, and the band is an idea, and the idea is relentless thrash metal. To make songs that they have made since The Black Album is sick. If they want to do that, START ANOTHER PROJECT. What is worse, ruining the good name of Metallica or ending Metallica to work on more personal music? Death did that. He went forward with "Control Denied" instead of calling it "Death". "Death" is a band separate from what Chuck Schuldiner did, because the music doesn't work in the context of "Death". "Mama Said" isn't a Metallica song, and doesn't belong. After "Dyer's Eve", every song they've released doesn't deserve the title of "Metallica" because it ISN'T. It's the sum of the parts, not the whole.

Well, aren't you sounding like a total Metallica "fan" cliche. Is it pathetic 'cause it's not 280,000 bpm metal up your ******* til it bleeds out like an out of control fire hydrant? Gimme a break. Tell you what. How 'bout you throw out every Metallica album you have except Master of Puppets and you can just burn that one CD eight more times and you can call that your Metallica collection. I, on the other hand, happen to like a band with a little bit of musical diversity, 'cause a band that's just limited to one sound is not only pathetic, it's... well, Slayer actually. Load is an underrated album of theirs and lyrically Mama Said is one of Hetfield's strongest efforts, so I guess that doesn't make me a true fan then.

Don't worry, Metallica won't retire on Death Magnetic. They need to hurry the f*ck up and make the album though so that they will tour in the US and I can see them again.

And whoevers bashing Mama Said? That was a personal, heartfelt song by Hetfield, and if you dont like it, piss off.

Oh, And another thing? Kirk is definately not overrated, Kirk is among the best guitarists alive these days, if somone stole his wah pedal and he was forced to play without it? He would be #1

Black Album - Death Magnetic > 80s albums

They need to keep touring like they always do. They are and have always been a live band. They make an album, tour for about triple that. Why would they even ask about a new album. Death Magnetic was awesome, keep broadcasting it on stage!

HAHAHAHAHAHA so true, so true. as nearly everyone's pointed out, UG is notorious for misleading headlines. to be honest, it's kinda sad that they'll put "articles" like this one up which offer no actual news and not give some other band a chance to have a headline on the main page.

i love METALLICA just as much as the next guy (maybe even more...i actually see a lot of GOOD things in the ST. ANGER album) but i don't feel like i need to see them in a headline 2-3x a week.

yeah, every time someone in metallica moves there's a news article about it.

Justice... 1988 you fail. cause its the best metallica album IMO

I can see Mustaine and Metallica, or Mustaine and Slayer, or Mustaine and Anthrax or Mustaine and everyone having a fight and then canceling the whole shit before they get to anywhere other than Europe or USA.

If ..And Justice For All F.U.C.K.E.D the Black Album, It would poop out Death Magnetic. Which makes it a halfway decent album. But then Death magnetic gave ST. Gaynger oral sex and you get juvenile lyrics with great music!
So MetallicA's next effort, is hopefully an orgy of Master of Puppets, Ride The Lightning, and Kill em All. Maybe they should just make an instrumental album?? Oh yeah!

Well, aren't you sounding like a total Metallica "fan" cliche. Is it pathetic 'cause it's not 280,000 bpm metal up your ***** til it bleeds out like an out of control fire hydrant? Gimme a break. Tell you what. How 'bout you throw out every Metallica album you have except Master of Puppets and you can just burn that one CD eight more times and you can call that your Metallica collection. I, on the other hand, happen to like a band with a little bit of musical diversity, 'cause a band that's just limited to one sound is not only pathetic, it's... well, Slayer actually. Load is an underrated album of theirs and lyrically Mama Said is one of Hetfield's strongest efforts, so I guess that doesn't make me a true fan then.

Like the way you used your musical 'enlightenment' as a stick to beat people with and then reference a band that has no relevance to this topic to prove your point...

Superperfex's point may be narrow minded but your's is no better.

You say "Load is an underrated album ", I say that's your opinion

You say "lyrically Mama Said is one of Hetfield's strongest efforts" again I say that's your opinion...

wow...so much hate for a band that influenced all the metal we listen to. even if you don't like metallica or anything they've done lately, you have to admit that most metal that came after metallica has been influenced by metallica. without metallica, bands like pantera or fear factory wouldn't sound the same. everyone is entitled to their opinion, but i'm just surprised so many people are bashing metallica.

completely unrelated, but metallica put on the best show i've ever seen. their new music isn't as strong as their old stuff and james's voice isn't the same, but they can really rock your face off.

BwareDWare94 wrote on 06/16/2010 - 11:10 am / quote |
What's with all this hate for Mama Said? That's the best song Metallica has released since the Justice album and you want to know why? Because it's so unique and heart-felt. Honestly, Mama Said is one of my favorite Metallica songs and the absolute hate for it because it's got some mild country influence is just pathetic. All you country haters, I'd just like you to know that even the most simplistic country artist has more talent in their fingernail than you ever will contain in your life. Not to mention artists like Eric Church and Josh Thompson, who I'd rather listen to over most rock and metal any day of the week. Some of you people have no idea what you're talking about and your lack of intelligence makes me laugh.

What self importance and musical enlightenment are you talking about? Of course, it's my opinion. Just like everyone else stating "Metallica hasn't done anything worth a listen since And Justice For All and everything afterward was mediocre garbage" is just stating an opinion. I don't care if people give a shit about what I think or not. I'm just getting annoyed with all the Metallica hate 'cause it's overused, petty, and yeah cliche... Was that too self important for you. I'm trying my damn hardest not to state an opinion.
