MGMT Too Crazy For Jay-Z

MGMT's collaboration with Jay-Z was rejected because they "went crazy".

The duo admit they took the wrong approach to the track sent to them to work on by the rap mogul for his last album "The Blueprint 3" - and it was subsequently rejected.

Band member Andrew VanWyngarden said: "We were under the impression they wanted us to go crazy."

The duo - which is completed by Ben Goldwasser - has come under fire recently for their second album "Congratulations" not including any pop hits, akin to the songs which made them famous, including "Kids" and "Time To Pretend" - but they feel those songs were nothing revolutionary.

Andrew added: "We used to think about how to make the most stereotypical pop song and that's the ones we did. You can break it down. That repeating progression has been used in a gajillion pop songs."

MGMT also claim their stance on music is widely misunderstood, but have done little to help their own image.

Andrew said: "We were portrayed in a lot of articles as these partying-obsessed dance music fanatics. Which we thought was funny at first, and then we realised not many people understood what we are really trying to do."

I feel like I'm the only person in the world who thinks MGMT is only okay. I don't care for much of their first album (as MGMT, that is - not counting The Management), besides the singles - especially "Electric Feel". I thought that was great.
And the only song I particularly care for on the new album is "It's Working". I love that. The rest just doesn't get me. :/

Sorry for the double post, but the bands name is MGMT, it used to be "The Management", but that was taken, so they abbreviated it to MGMT, and now it doesn't even stand for Management anymore, it's just MGMT.

I feel bad for MGMT.

People are mad because they apparently changed their sound dramatically, but if you listen to the songs on Oracular Spectacular that weren't singles then you will realize that MGMT didn't just write club bangers. I thought people would have expected this "different" sound.

I am glad that Congratulations sounds the way it does.

I still love MGMT but I just can't get into their new album. Yeah I liked "Kids" and "Electric Feel" but I really liked their other songs, in fact when I first got Oracular Spectacular I skipped those songs because I wanted to see what else they had to offer. My favorite songs were "Of Moons, Birds, and Monsters" and "Weekend Wars". But so far the only thing that's really caught my ear is "Siberian Breaks" which I think is one of the most epic and awesome songs to come out of any genre in a while. I dunno maybe I'll find more to like from this album but who knows...

I dunno about all that, when your albums are going multiplatinum over a decade into your career, you're doing something right. And look at what MGMT and Ratattat (sp?) did for Kid Cudi and his song "Pursuit of Happiness". They probably would've done the same w/Jay-Z if he hadnt rejected the song. They made a second album which is true to themselves, and not that many people like it. Suddenly Jay Z (OMFG JAY Z!) wants to collab with them. They're like "dude, who the **** is Jay Z?". They do their usual crazy psychedelic stuff, and that rapper is like "holy **** this is too intense! people won't play this shit on MTV! **** that!". The song is then pulled. End of story.

Then they went back to boring played out hipster psych/rock/whatever junk that you could never convince a hipster is played out beyond belief because most of the "hipsters" these days only listen to things that someone else tells them is cool. They're just as bad as pop audiences, and I'd be willing to bet none of the people on here all up on MGMT's junk have any idea where dorky little scene or its costumes and haircuts came from. Anyone else remember when "indie rock" bands were just bands on indie labels, often a little experimental, and the best of whom willing to take influence from distant places and reign them into their own sound? MGMT is alright. Honestly, I don't get the hype about them and everyone will probably forget about them in a couple years when the next big thing blows up, but at least they have an album full of catchy songs that they supposedly wrote "ironically." And Jay-Z is still pretty legit. Among the better mainstream rappers for sure. None of his recent albums have been quite as good as The Black Album (and the Danger Mouse's Grey Album mashup was legit as hell, too), but he's still not bad at all. He has a fairly unique style and he's recognizable on anything he touches. That said, this whole article is silly. I'd be willing to bet MGMT just gave Jay-Z something he couldn't do anything with without mangling it beyond recognition.

That said, I find most of the discussion on this page to be mind-numbingly oblivious to the music industry or the culture that surrounds the people involved in making music. It sounds like a bunch of high school kids talking about how stuff that isn't mainstream is better than stuff that is mainstream for whatever arbitrary reason (commercialism, "artistic integrity," people who live in trailers sometimes liking it, whatever) without actually having any ear for what they're talking about, or any context by which to make their judgments.

MGMT's "congratulations" just blew my mind! I rememeber back when they were small even just a few years ago, and i saw them on MeTV During SXSW (i live in Austin ha), but they really stuck out to me, and the fact that after all that success they go ahead and make an album with no pop singles really impresses me. Alright, I take offense to this, seeing as MGMT has been my favorite band for the past year and a half, and your basically calling me a hipster (and everybody else that loves MGMT), that only listens to what the radio tells me to.

Dude, that's not why I, and a lot of other people, listen to MGMT at all. I listen to them because I love their sound. It inspires me to make music of my own.

Not everything falls into your own convoluted world view. And as MGMT's artistic integrity goes, from what I've seen, they've shown a lot of it, especially with this album. They wrote the main singles off of the first album 3 years before they wrote the rest of the stuff, which sounds a lot like the stuff you have on Congratulations. They could've gone and kept making stuff in a genre that they hadn't written stuff in for 5 years, or they could make what they had been writing more recently, which is what they really wanted to write, and then they stuck by it, even under criticism, because it's the music that they love to make. If that's not artistic integrity, I don't know what is.

I honestly couldn't give less of a shit about the culture around the band. It's the music that matters.

I'm not saying at all that all MGMT's fans are like that. I'm just saying that the hype is unwarranted and most of their fans will probably forget about them in another year and a half, which really, is nothing. Come back in another year and a half and tell me if you feel the same way about them. I sort of doubt it. To me, saying a band is your "favorite band" means nothing until they've put out... well... more than 2 or 3 albums over the course of a year and a half. And maybe seen some hard times that divided their fanbase on top of it. They haven't really demonstrated any staying power yet. Maybe they'll make me eat my words, but if the overall reaction to the new album is any indication, they'll probably end up with a few people who are REALLY into them and a hell of a lot of people who just don't care anymore. Just like every other band that was a lot of peoples' "favorite" for a couple years.

As for artistic integrity, I'm not saying MGMT doesn't have any. I'm saying I don't care whether or not they have any. It just doesn't matter. And I don't care if they don't. Note the word "arbitrary" in that sentence. As for my references to the culture surrounding bands and the music industry, I think it's a very relevant and separate thing. A band has an image they want to uphold. If MGMT gave Jay-Z psych rock for the collaboration, it doesn't surprise me he didn't use it. That's never been his thing. The discussion on this page largely seems to be making the assumption that MGMT is just "too cool" for Jay-Z or something. Or that Jay-Z just doesn't have any taste. I feel that it's pretty likely neither of these things is the case. You're pretty much taking me all wrong. R

I think who is right or wrong (assuming someone has to be right or wrong) depends not on your musical tastes (sorry forum flamers), but on how the original agreement was worded. If Jay-Z's guys just dropped off a tape and said 'have fun', then he gets what he gets. He doesn't like it? Tough shit, you should have been more specific.

If they agreed on what was going to be done and MGMT went loopy and did something else, then it doesn't really matter who has more musical cred ... not holding up your end of the bargain is not holding up your end of the bargain, regardless of why. If you can't understand that, then don't do session work.

MGMT = Original music. Those that say they aren't are just too upset with the fact that "Kids" "Electric Feel" and their other "pop-hits" sent them to the top. The BIG picture people aren't realizing is that MGMT or The Management have been out for quite some time now, longer than you would think. It took Kids a while to get some notice. They didn't just make these songs and become giants. It wasn't their plan in the beginning to get famous either, it all just happened. Of course you have read the reviews, they don't want that spotlight. I respect that. I respect them for not willingly selling out. These guys have stayed completely true to what they started in the beginning. The new album RULES.
