According to a recent Rolling Stone interview with Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock, Johnny Marr, best known as the lead musician behind British rock band The Smiths, has joined the indie powerhouse as a permanent member.
For their forthcoming release, tentatively titled We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, Brock enlisted the help of Marr as a collaborator in what he described as a "cautious commitment." Marr spent time with the band at Sweet Tea Studios in Mississippi recording for the album before deciding to also tour in its support, reports AZCentral.com.
"
Eventually it all came together, and it was a really good fit, which I think actually surprised all of us,”
Brock told magazine. “
Then he was pretty much a member of the band - not pretty much. He’s a full blown member of the band."
We Were Dead, due out on December 19th, marks the second partnership between Modest Mouse and producer Dennis Herring, who also produced the band’s last album Good News for People Who Love Bad News, which garnered significant commercial success upon its release in 2004.
Isaac described the new album as a "nautical balalaika carnival romp."
