Of course Myspace could have just used http://mobile.myspace.com instead of using a folder for their service.
I don't blame the band for being pissed off at the change, although it is quite insignificant.

If they had it under a url like www.mobile.com, and that was taken then it is diffrent than a www.myspace.com/mobile url. MySpace owns all the url's with their name on it.

Lots of issues can arise from this. Give out promotional materials with your websites URL have someone try to go there and find out that its not your band. Looks bush league and can lose you money. Have inbound links to your website which help increase your search engine ranking suddenly disappear and now your no where to be found on Google.

This actually can be a big deal for a serious band. Of course they need to get their own site as well, but that can cost a lot of money as well. Not everyone has the time, money, skill, or patience to do that.

They will keep the URL. If you go on www.myspace.com/mobile, there is a statement from Myspace stating it was a mistake...

The thing is...myspace terms and conditions say that you can never change the url once you have chosen it...

Nice to see how honest you are, Tom!

If this was in response to mine, I'm not saying they should have it as a separate domain, just a separate subdomain on their myspace.com site. So instead of having "http://www.mobile.com" it would be "http://mobile.myspace.com"

It could cause significant problems if you've printed out CDs with the previous url address written on it, as well as having to change links all over the web to direct people to the right page again.

If they rightfully paid for the url address then this would be news. Myspace gives the URL's upon their digression and can change it if they please.

Was UG really that pressed for some news today? It seems like this was only posted for the sake of a reaction.

CaMacKid :
The band should have thought of this when picking a myspace address. It's like naming my band "Terms of Service".

Myspace got full rights as well. If the band was using the address to advertise, they where stupid to promote their band's web address as "www.myspace.com/mobile".
They should just say "Find us on Myspace!" or something. Those addresses are very temporary because they [myspace] could for any reason change their address system like metallica.myspace.com or myspace.com/band/metallica or something.
