Nickelback To Join Live Nation

artist: nickelback date: 07/08/2008 category: general music news
Nickelback To Join Live Nation

Canadian rock band Nickelback has signed a global recording, touring and merchandising deal with concert promoter Live Nation, the company said on Tuesday.

Financial details were not disclosed but an industry source familiar with the talks said the deal was worth between $50 million to $70 million.

The Nickelback deal is the latest in a string of high profile, multi-faceted deals Los Angeles-based Live Nation has signed with major artists including Madonna, Jay-Z and U2 in recent months.

Nickelback, whose last album sold 10 million copies, has signed a three-album/three tour deal with Live Nation, as well as a deal for the company to handle all its merchandising, licensing, sponsorship, secondary ticketing, endorsements, DVD and broadcast rights, fan club, website and literary rights.

The band, fronted by Chad Kroeger, still has two albums left to deliver with its longtime label Road Runner Records before it records any albums for Live Nation.

But the deal between Nickelback and Live Nation could raise questions about the value of a deal Warner Music Group, struck in December 2006 to buy a majority stake in Road Runner Records for $73.5 million.

Though Road Runner also has hard rock names like Slipknot, Megadeth and Stone Sour on its roster, Nickelback is easily its best known band, having sold more than 26 million albums.

Live Nation said Nickelback's last North American and Australian tour in 2006/07 grossed more than $67 million.

Thanks for the info to Reuters.

they are a good live band because all they have to do is be able to play one of their songs good which in turn equals them being able to play every single song from their discography good

They actually put on a great live show, and you know while you guys were sitting in your bedrooms practicing scales and techniques, these guys practiced writing songs, and it's kind of obvious now who made the most out of that time... most of you guys couldn't write a hit song if you tried for 30 years. Nickelback keep pumping them out, and although I'm not necessarily a fan (don't own any of their music), I have tremendous respect for people who can reach out to so many people with their music. You can't learn how to write catchy, compelling songs from books, you know.

I never get the hatred of Nickleback. Im by no means a Nickleback fan, but to me they sound quite similar to the likes of Foo Fighters, who are ludicrously popular and loved by everyone so it would seem. To me there are a lot of bands out there who are a hell of alot more annoying. At least Nickleback arent emo.

With the exception that Dave Grohl is a brilliant musician who essentially shaped the sound of modern American rock. Chad Kroeger is just riding on the coattails of bands like the Foo Fighters, Nirvana, etc.

And anyway, I find Nickleback far more annoying than the majority of "Emo" bands

No. While we were all practicing guitar these guys were practicing writing THE SAME SONG that sells pretty well. These guys have less diversity than AC/DC. Everyone rips on them because you can't turn on a radio without hearing the same c0ck r0ck song over and over again. I liked their first hit song, but hearing it overplayed on the radio with every other similar sounding song they have is too much.

Finally, someone with a brain. I respect your comment so much more because you said you weren't even a fan, but you can take a reasonable standing on things. Half these posers in here are probably only slating Nickelback because it's the cool thing to do, and I really cannot see what's wrong with them. Musical integrity is what matters. Everybody knows a I-IV-V cadence sounds good. If you can't bring something original to the table then people who think like myself will shun them. People are right in saying that I don't have a thing on them because they've sold more records than I have, but just because it sells doesn't make it good. There are 6 BILLION Bibles in the world, but not everybody likes those.

For the record, I'm not on either side if that fuels a religious argument. Don't judge me.

Haha yeah, no. When people go to a show they go there to be entertained, and that is why it's the musicians' responsibility to make it worth the money. Otherwise people could just listen to the CD. For example I'm a huge fan of Dream Theater and own all their albums, I went to see them live and they played everything perfectly and it was boring, even standing 10m from Petrucci. You're free to dislike NB for whatever reasons, but they do everything they can to entertain a paying audience. And the audience is there because they liked the music. Nothing you post on a forum will change the fact that their music connects with people, which should be the primary goal of any artist, and therefore are and will be better than you at life.

Have a Nice Day.
