According to Blabbermouth.net, Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx was interviewed Washington D.C.'s Fox 5 about the band's upcoming co-headlining tour with KISS - dubbed simply "The Tour" - which will kick off on July 20 in Bristow, Virginia. You can watch the chat below.
When asked if he had any concerns about getting physically worn down by the upcoming three-month mammoth trek with KISS, Sixx said, "I've been worn down for so long, I've becom like... We're like soldiers, man - you can't take us out now. You do it long enough and you realize that you just get stronger and you get better - you're a better player, better singer, better performer, and you just go. You're like a war machine, to be honest with you. The longer you've been around, the better you get. And if there's anything that young musicians [should] take away from this, you can't look like a roadie and be in a f--king band. You've gotta be in a band. You've gotta be a rock star. You've gotta dress like a rock star, you've gotta play music that's important, you've gotta put a hundred percent into your lyrics, a hundred percent into your songs, a hundred percent into your show, your packaging, your marketing, and do it. It's time for new bands to step up because KISS and Mötley Crüe, Aerosmith, The [Rolling] Stones... we're not always gonna be here. Who's gonna replace us? There's no one out there. It's sad."
Mötley Crüe recently entered drummer Tommy Lee's studio called The Atrium in Calabasas, California to begin recording a new song that will be released to coincide with the band's upcoming summer co-headlining tour with KISS.
Speaking to VH1 Radio Network's Dave Basner following last week's press conference at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, California to officially announce details of the tour, Sixx stated about the band's new track, "We're gonna play it on tour. We just wrote it and recorded it. We're just finishing mixing. It's called 'Sex' and it sounds very much like it's off of the first record [1981's 'Too Fast For Love']. And that was definitely on purpose. I've been writing very simple riffs for the last year and focusing on how these riffs would work for Vince [Neil, vocals], basically, and took it in the studio with Tommy and Mick [Mars, guitar] and the thing just came alive."
Man I used to like Nikki but he's such a whiny ass now...and Motely Crue isn't near on the same level as KISS, Aerosmith, or the Rolling Stones, so I don't know why he even went there.
Nikki Sixx is awesome. Can't stand Motley Crue though... And what he said about there being no bands to replace the big classic rock bands is true, unfortunately. Like he said, it's sad.
I respect him for writing all of Motley Crue's music but seriously, I liked him better a couple years ago directly after the Herion Diaries came out. At least then he had a message.. All he does now is spout off meaningless crap to try and grab headlines.
so basically, he's telling kids to develop a large ego and dress like a faggot in order to succeed... I think his band should go back to their local roots and see how well that works for them.
You can, on the other hand, look like a woman who has just consumed 20 pounds of raw cocaine to dull her pain because she was catapulted through a homeless shelter's storage for old clothing.
He sure puts himself on a pedestal. I don't want anyone to follow in his footsteps. There's a reason hair/glam metal faded out. There's always new bands that are good, he's just still living in the 80's.
I don't think any one's really understood what he is saying. Everyone is always going on about how the titles are misleading. This one is no exception. Once you get past that one line and read everything he said in context you'll realise that he is basically saying this...
You can't be a great band without putting you're all into it. Dress up, put on an almighty show and live like a rockstar. I mean why wouldn't you. Very few people get successful as musicians you might as well enjoy it and give it everything rather than trying to blend in with the crowd (hence the roadie reference).
I understand where everyone's coming from, but he does have a point. Talent isn't enough to make it big most of the time. There are so many AMAZING guitarist that aren't signed it's a shame. You have to make an impression.
Yeah, because music is all about your apparence. Duuur...
Grow up.
Well, most bands make their money (ie their living) from touring, which means they need to be able to put on a good show and be entertaining. And part of that is how they look.
Being in a band is about more than just playing an instrument.
That said, I disagree with Mr Six. If a bands image is 'bunch of roadies' and it works for them and their fans, then more power to them.
But don't imagine any band don't care what they look like on stage. Scruffy performers look scruffy on purpose, and flamboyant performers look flamboyant on purpose. It's just naive to think otherwise.
I know what he's saying. Who are tomorrow's big bands with a great acts? While I like Nickelback, Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, John Mayer, and especially the Foo Fighters, no one puts on a show. Their are all great musicians (including Nickelback), but none of them do anything note worthy when it comes to their act. No running around stage, big lights, fireworks, fire, dressing up, etc.

It isn't. I go to a music concert to enjoy some music I like. If I want to see make-ups, nice hairs and leather, I go to a strip club.
I'll be wearing cargo shorts and a Florida Gators T-shirt at band practice tonight. Maybe I should just quit playing music since that's not dressing like a rock star and according to the BE ALL-END ALL on rock music, Nikki Sixx, that's not dressing like a rock star. Thank you, Nikki, for clearly showing me I apparently have know idea what the hell I'm doing playing rock music.

Fair enough, but not a single one of those bands you've gone to see walked on stage without caring what they're wearing. Not a single one.
If it wasn't for that wig, he'd look like a roadie. I love Motley, but they've made no news about their music for years. Image is great, but it will only take you so far and when that's all you've left you're a joke.
Fair enough, but not a single one of those bands you've gone to see walked on stage without caring what they're wearing. Not a single one.
Since I don't really pay attention to this kind of stuff on a concert... whatever.
Btw, I've seen Napalm Death live and they dress like normal people to a concert.
Same for 4986456546 punk bands I've seen live...
Did you read the 2nd paragraph in my original post? I wasn't saying all bands should have massive hair and eyeliner, just that they care what they look like.
Barney does indeed dress like a normal concert goer. That doesn't mean he doesn't care what he looks like. That's the image that works for his band (and his genre) and his fans.
You can, on the other hand, look like a woman who has just consumed 20 pounds of raw cocaine to dull her pain because she was catapulted through a homeless shelter's storage for old clothing.
Now that was funny. Someone explain to "Nikki" that tranny and soldier are not the same thing.
I dont understand what he's saying. You have to dress a certain way to play music? Personally I think fashion/image and music should be mutually exclusive.
I know what he's saying. Who are tomorrow's big bands with a great acts? While I like Nickelback, Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, John Mayer, and especially the Foo Fighters, no one puts on a show. Because none of those things have anything to do with good music? If those are the things you look for, you obviously don't think the band's music is respectable, or it's flying right over your head. And only little girls play "dress up".
Did you read the 2nd paragraph in my original post? I wasn't saying all bands should have massive hair and eyeliner, just that they care what they look like.
I did... and I replied:
Since I don't really pay attention to this kind of stuff on a concert... whatever.
Bands can wear whatever they want. It just gets shitty when they put what they’ll be wearing on stage over the music, like when you say 'You Can't Look Like A Roadie And Be In A F-cking Band'.
Btw, the thing about Napalm Death was more of a unrelated note, actually.
There are guys that "look like roadies" that are more talented musicians than anyone in Motley Crue could ever dream of being, and their bands are a million times better than Motley Crue.
If you're all about image and being a "rock star" then you're just a tool.
Fair enough, but not a single one of those bands you've gone to see walked on stage without caring what they're wearing. Not a single one.
I've seen dozens of bands that have gone on stage without giving a single **** about what they were wearing. Some people are actually in it for the music, not the fame.
Don't worry Nikki the band "De La Cruz" out of Australia is what your looking for in a band you claim just don't exist anymore. They are already loved by "Steel Panther" David Coverdale and "Megadeth" and a few other big timers. The dudes are a pure embodiment of Rock & Roll.

Right, and I completely agree that the looks should never matter more than the music. The music is always first and foremost, no matter what.
I even said further up I disagree with what Sixx is saying. I don't think bands have to look flashy or put on a theatrical show or do anything like that.
It's just that everyone puts thought into how they look on stage, wether that look is corpse paint and a bullet belt, or lipstick, or ripped jeans and trainers.
the music always comes first. But you need to have an image. a visual that goes along with the sound.
The best thing would be something like The Black Crowes in the early days or guns n' roses in the early days. where for them that was normal and they didn't know any better, yet they looked totally different from anybody that walks down the street.
I agree with what Nikki said, that there isn't really a band yet that's gonna take over once Motley, Kiss, Aerosmith and the stones are gone. although there is this amazing band from the UK called Heaven's Basement that could take over the world by storm(yes they are that good) and they have a rock n' roll image. Only time will tell

De La Cruz is a cool band, but I'm not sure if they are gonna be the next big thing in rock. I'm also not sure if megadeth likes em, since they are the modern day Dokken/Ratt kinda glam band, and megadeth kinda always hated glam.
I'm one of the few people who do admit that I like glam/hair metal, and I hope De la Cruz is gonna make it big, but again I'm not sure if they are gonna take over the world and sell out stadiums
to be fair a lot of roadies are in bands themselves, so don't they look like they're in bands themselves? meaning you should look like roadies cos they're in bands too?

you don't need those things to put on an awesome show.
Godsmack puts on an amazing live show
Machine head was another one that kicked asses.

One does not simply put the Foo Fighters and "no running around stage" in the same sentence.
Dave Ghrol is one of the most energetic people I've seen play live!
Okay, I don't agree with what he's saying about appearance completely, but no truer words have been spoken than "...you've gotta play music that's important, you've gotta put a hundred percent into your lyrics, a hundred percent into your songs, a hundred percent into your show, your packaging, your marketing, and do it." I truly believe that rock music cannot be half-assed. For whatever that's worth, I agree with him for the most part.
I don't agree with him, you can definitively be in a big band without looking like a rockstar, some people actually make music so good that it speaks for itself, and doesn't require tonnes of self-promotion and styling for the band.

Megadeth have played there videos at some of there concerts on the big screen/jumbotron, so they can't dislike them to much.
The other part only time will tell. There is already 3 record labels seeking them out and they already have several endorsements and getting more, not to mention being featured in this months "Classic Rock AOR". Not bad for a band that has only been around for about 5 months. They definitely have what it takes to be one of the greatest in the Rock world. It's been over 25 years since I could say that about anybody.

Dude. Have you ever been to any aforementioned shows? The rock bands you mentioned do put on a pretty kick ass live show WITH the running around, fire works, pyro etc.
I absolutely agree with him. I've toured only nationally but on and off for 8 years and it's insanely exhausting. It wears out your body, your psyche, and every relationship you have - whether it be with band mates or personal relationships.
Everyone dreams of the life, but there are VERY few who can actually pull it off. Talent is only a fraction of the equation.

that's cool, I didn't know that about Megadeth, that was a cool thing of there's to do. I know about the classic rock magazine thing, and that was cool. I hope they are gonna be big, because like I already said I'm a fan of there's.
having said that, I do thing that ultimately people are also gonna want a band that's more like guns n' roses or something, a band with more of a rough edge, and I think that's perhaps something where Heaven's basement fit's in. or hopefully something like black stone cherry will grow to become much bigger than they are right now
Tell that to Mastodon, Crowbar, Down, High On Fire, Metallica (the younger days), Slayer. Sorry Nikki, wearing eyeliner and teasing your hair doesn't make you a rock star. Some of the best shows I've ever seen were in tiny clubs with a stage full of talented musicians that looked like smelly dirt bags.
I learned from Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins to not be a "rock star." They look like normal dudes, and they are doing just fine. Id quite honestly rather be in Foo Fighters than Crüe
Man I used to like Nikki but he's such a whiny ass now...and Motely Crue isn't near on the same level as KISS, Aerosmith, or the Rolling Stones, so I don't know why he even went there.

Take a look at a picture of Metallica, Anthrax, etc...any thrash metal band. They care just as much about their image as glam metal bands do. Just because its different then Motley Crue's image doesn't mean they look like roadies, or look like normal people (which is what Sixx should have said to make his point more clear).
"you can't look like a roadie and be in a ****ing band"
Exactly right. Unless you don't want to be a gimicky band that is nothing special musically and is carried by image alone (aka every glam rock band).
True, but just barely. They're both sub-par gimicky rock bands, and this douche thinking bandmates all need to dress up as chicks to be taken seriously does nothing but make me lose even more respect, considering most great metal bands don't need stupid gimicky shit to be good.

At the risk of losing all credibility because of my nickname, he's wrong. He just can't see past the rose-tinted glasses of his style of music to realize that there's a new breed of rock and metal. There are quite a few bands that I forsee becoming massive, and just because they're not the same style as this G.L.A.M. doesn't mean they're not going to be big.
Great advice. If any of you want to go somewhere in the music industry, listen to it. If you want to achieve the pinnacle of artistic integrity, you might want to make a few adjustments to Nikki's advice...
Fox 5 is actually one of my local news channels, but I switched over to NBC when the GOP race started. Good gosh, Fox mews just makes me mad sometimes.
OT: I think Mr. Sixx's message was more along the lines of, "You can't be in a band and not care how you look."
As far as rock and metal goes, I don't really think appearances should be an integral part of an act or band.
I mean each genre has it's own image; glam rock with the outrageous glitter and spandex, black metal with black clothing and spikes. But all things considered, if a band says they're a black metal band, and make good black metal music, you're not going to give a damn if they just look like regular guys in t-shirts and jeans; the priority is the music, and how it sounds.
If we start paying close attention to appearances, we're a step closer to pop... And that's not somewhere we want to be is it?
wtf? i didnt know being in a band was about how you looked. how can this girly looking dousche tell anyone how to look if your to play in a band. hey nikki six, go **** yourself!
Someone needs to tell this guy the 80's ended 22 years ago. And yes Motley Crüe has a replacement, the Black Veil Brides that are just as mainstream and bad as Motley Crüe was in the 80's.
rock and roll isn't about wearing tons of makeup and banging chicks all day. its always been about the music and playing something that reaches people and inspires them. nikki six seems to have forgotten that.
I thought that mean one of the reasons Metallica formed was because they were sick of the hair metal and glam. They used to dress and still do like people you could meet on the street and ended up being a whole lot bigger than Motley Crue, not to mention a whole lot better.
What's gonna happen when Kiss, Motley Crue, the Stones are gone? Nothing. Absolutely ****ing nothing. We carry on and accept the Foo as the kings of rock.

Hey man, you forget that without the Black Album, like it or not, Metallica wouldn't be as big and successful now.
Hey, wait a second - why did Metallica decided to streamline their sound, and hire Bob Rock? Because they got tired of playing thrash, and because Lars Ulrich loved Mötley Crüe's Dr. Feelgood.
Know your facts.

I think Lars more or less liked the sound of the record. Of course, without the Black Album Metallica would not be as big but when Metallica was introduced to Bob Rock they asked what he had worked on and when the response was Motley Crue they basically said "Oh **** that" at first.
And another thing with the thrash thing, Metallica had pushed the boundaries as far as they could with Puppets and Justice so they slowed down, got HEAVIER and released a good ass record with the Black Album. I don't think they were aiming to be these mainstream rock kings.

“They had broken through to one level, but they still weren’t on mainstream radio,” says Rock. “When they came to me, they were ready to make that leap to the big, big leagues. A lot of people think that I changed the band. I didn’t. In their heads, they were already changed when I met them.”
"So I told them that on Motley Crue's Dr Feelgood, which I produced and Metallica loved, the band had tuned down to D. Metallica then tuned down to D, and that’s when the riff really became huge. It was this force that you just couldn’t stop, no matter what.”
he is right in that theres no one around to replace these guys but i don't think he understands why we like them in the first place. heres a clue its the music

well if my tv blows up and i only have a radio, i don't care care what you look like as long as your tunes are good...guess your shit out of luck Motley Crue, cause most of your songs shit me to tears...and how dare Mr Sixx attribute Motley to being in the same realm as Aerosmith, Stones...

Some of the best shows I've ever seen were in tiny clubs with a stage full of talented musicians that looked like smelly dirt bags.
And that's his point. If you look like a smelly dirt bag you'll just keep playing those tiny clubs and never "make it big".
That's been Motley's and Sixx's problem. They've always been talented songwriters, but their concern with their image (and heroin) always got in the way. That's why they died and came back a caricature of themselves with new material that's totally worthless. Of the Crue catalog there's probably a double album worth of decent material. The rest is filler.
He may come across as a little arrogant, but if you run the numbers, he's correct when he makes comparisons of Crue to Kiss, Aerosmith, and it's fair enough to include the Stones.
Look up Crue's album sales. 80 million world wide.
Kiss just over 100 million world wide, but Kiss has almost 7 years of band life on Motley Crue.
Aerosmith just over a 100 million. They formed 10 years before Crue.
The Stones, formed in 1962 have estimates that put them over 200 million in record sales world wide. Arguably the most impressive of the all the bands mentioned. Lets use their sales as a benchmark for comparing Sixx's statement, "It's time for new bands to step up because KISS and Mötley Crüe, Aerosmith, The [Rolling] Stones... we're not always gonna be here. Who's gonna replace us? There's no one out there. It's sad." and run some numbers using this equation-
Estimated record sales worldwide/the length of the career
The Rolling Stones estimate 200 Million/5 decades= 40 million a decade
Aerosmith-lets round up and give them 104 millon/4 decades=26 million each decade
Kiss-lets give them 109 million/3.9 decades=27 millions records sold each decade
Motley Crue-80 Million/3.1 decades=25.8 million in albums sales per decade.
Never mind that you don't like him or his bands music.
Nikki Sixx is such a diva. I have loved Motley Crue for over 25 years, but Nikki is such a poser. First of all, you wouldn't be here today without your Roadies. Second, when all of the above listed bands (Kiss, etc) are long gone, I will still be going to to the greatest rock tour to ever take a stage. RAMMSTEIN!
