Nirvana Bassist Comes Out Of Retirement

Former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic is coming out of retirement to play bass on the first tour in more than a decade by influential punk group Flipper.

Novoselic, who played in various groups after Nirvana's 1994 demise, put music on the shelf in recent years to concentrate on local politics in Washington state, where he has championed free speech and voting issues and even considered a run for lieutenant governor at one point.

Flipper tour dates:

12/01 - Seattle, WA
12/02 - Portland, OR
12/07 - Sommerset All Tomorrows Party's Festival
12/11 - London, England
12/13 - Manchester, England
12/14 - Glasgow, Scotland
12/15 - Belfast, Northern Ireland
12/16 - Dublin, Ireland
12/17 - Galway, Ireland
12/20 - San Francisco, CA

If you're a fan of this dude, please pick up the criminally overlooked self-titled cd from Eyes Adrift.

It features Krist on bass, Curt from Meat Puppets on guitar, and Bud from Sublime on drums. Rather than a self-indulgent supergroup cd, it's actually a finely crafted album with some great tunes and performances.

I'm still holding out hope that they'll put out another one someday...

They're a super badass punk band. They actually did a really cool cover of scentless apprentice for a Nirvana tribute album.

Anybody else fans of one of Krist's other post Nirvana bands Sweet 75?

first of all no disrespect to krist kurt or nirvana in anyway. but in forums about people like dime bag darrell or really talented people all they talk about is how they suck. but in forums like this one where the musicians abailities are equivlant to a 15 year old guiar player who has been playing for a year its peacefull and nothing but praise. now dont get me wrong i like the sound but its just to boring to play because it is so damn simple.

Music doesn't have to be mind bendingly difficult or fast to be good.

i don't think that another hardcore band that was on hiatus for like twenty years needs to go on a tour, along with an unoriginal lineup. (black flag and dead kennedys set the precedent)

People like Krist for several reasons - he was awesome onstage - many of his basslines aren't actually rootnotes, and Nirvana's music was never meant to be complicated so the simplicity works brilliantly - the simplicity comes from the fact that Kurt Cobain wrote most of Nirvana's basslines aswell as guitar parts and many a time played drums to show Dave Grohl what kind of drumlines he wanted on an album.

Hate Hirvana or not, Krist was awesome (he's much like Mike Dirnt in that respect) - a bassline who rocks hard live and really knows his theory. Now, I love Dimebag and will never slag him off - ever - but remember that everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

...And YAY!!! Krist is back ^_^ That makes me all happy inside - he's one of my biggest bass influences.

That's not true dude. Some of the best songs I've ever heard or played have been Punk songs which we all know are the easiest songs to play. There are some songs that are good because they are hard to play but some songs are amazing because they are simple. It's not about the difficulty level but the energy level.

Bass Cat wrote on 11/21/2006 - 05:36 pm / quote |
i agree with Alibiestroyed, music does not neccesarily have to be complicated to be good. overcomplication usually just makes for too much noise. i mean, look at smells like teen spiritits a song which defines a generation, and yet its very simple. Krist better not retire again!

Flipper is a punk/grunge/alternative/hardcore/noise band from San Francisco, around the same time as the DKs.

I'd see them but the show they're playing is 21+ WTF

Nirvana Bassist Comes Out Of Retirement

I like how they said that, if they were doing an article on kurt cobain the wouldn't say "Nirvana guitarist/vocalist", they say "Kurt Cobain". That just shows how many people don't know who the bass player for nirvana is.
Anyways I'm glad to hear that Krist is coming out of retirment, and to be with Flipper is even better. They are kickass band and they do a great cover of Nirvana's "Scentless Apprentice"

Yeah but if it sounds good it sounds good, regardless of how hard it is to play. There's also stuff out there that sounds like crap but that's really hard to play.

Its a case that Krist is more popular British Josh, and lets not forget reedwarren33that regardless of the fact how difficult something is to play, sound is very important! Krist had/has an awesome sound/set up! And well "IF" (And thats a big if) you become a better more respectfull & experienced musician you will stop ranting on like an upset teen about how Dimebags "METAL" guitaring is more "difficult" than Krists "GRUNGE" bass playing! The two genres & instruments are different!

dude seriously, either respect other people's opinions or keep yours to yourself..this article was in no way, shape, or form about Dimebag Darrel until you made it about him..he was brilliant..a legend..but this article is about Krist Novoselic coming out of retirement..and as for that I wish him nothing but the upmost sucess, and its glad to have him back!
