Noel Gallagher: 'We're In The Same League As The Rolling Stones'

Oasis leader Noel Gallagher has said his band are in the same league as The Rolling Stones now.

The guitarist made the admission during the band's current US tour.

"Everybody knows who we are. You have to see us in league with The Rolling Stones now," he declared. "Everybody's heard of the Stones, everybody knows what they sound like, everybody knows what they do. You either go because you like it or you don't. It's easy."

Gallagher also praised Ryan Adams, who is currently support Oasis in the US.

He told Rolling Stone: "I've got a lot of respect for the man. He's a great guitar player.

"He's a little eccentric. He wears stripy socks and platform shoes, but not everybody's perfect. I wouldn't be on tour with him if I didn't like him."

Thanks for the report to Nme.com.

Bah, the Gallaghers are just attention sluts who will say anything for a headline. You think it doesn't occur to him that comparing his band to the Stones will piss people off? Especially after the infamous Beatles comment.

And in no way is this band a Beatles clone. An inbred redneck step cousin, maybe, but the word clone connotes equality. Twats they might be, but the Gallaghers are no Lennon/McCartney. Hell, I'll take Ringo's Don't Pass Me By over Champaign Supernova any god damned day of the week.

Noel is the main culprit. Sure, Liam has had his controversies, but nothing that most other rock stars haven't done. If you call Liam an "attention slut", you must also lump 90% of rock stars in there.

Also, I'll go as far as saying Oasis > The Stones. Honestly, what good music have the Stones produced in the last 20 years? The Stones were good in their prime, but not as good as everybody makes them out to be.

Shame Oasis went downhill after their first album. You can't even compare Liam to Mick Jagger - Mick had charisma, a better voice and he actually has a personality. Plus he doesn't stand there droning under a mic, Mick's all over the stage even after 60!

And it's not like Noel's a virtuoso either, or even a particularly influentual guitarist, and stands nothing compared to Keith Richards.

Wouldn't even go that far. The Stone Roses are way better. Oasis owe so much to them anyway.

When he mentions "the same league as The Rolling Stones" he seems to be referring to the amount of recognition that the band get. Like it or not, they are incredibly well known and in that respect his comment is fairly valid.

If, however, he compares the quality of Oasis' output to that of the Stones then he is completely wrong. I don't really like anything the Stones have made since the mid-seventies, but I like them more than I like Oasis' records.

And please...stop calling them Beatles clones. They'll never get anywhere near that level of greatness.

/facepalm. Guys, Noel Gallagher is no better than a simple net troll. He uses the media to spark conroversy and it gives his band a little bit of gained limelight, but the fact remains. They had 2 good albums and have tried to recreate them every 2 years for the past 15

red star wrote on 11/28/2008 - 01:12 pm / quote |
jesus christ, oasis is no where near the same level of fame as the rolling stones. the rolling stones is known by young and old people alike and rolling stones apparel is sold everywhere including places that have nothing to do with music like wal-mart. even people who never listen to rock music or pay attention to rock media at all know who the rolling stones are. the same can't be said for oasis, whose two songs wonderwall and champagne supernova are probably more well known then the band itself. they're a limewire band, half the people who buy or download their music are probably just going for those two songs. people trying to defend noel's comment are fighting an uphill battle here, i can't see how anyone can defend this douche.

But then they go and say something stupid like this and I am reminded how much of a bunch of big head, arrogant tossers they can be!!! They just know how to **** it all up. If they didnt say stupid quotes like this and concentrate on the music, they would most probably have a lot more respect and maybe sell more albums. It's funny to see so many people slagging him off and saying their music is "shit" when in fact, calling any music "shit" is completely immature and just shows a lack of appreciation for music in general.

Whether you like Oasis or not, the fact remains that they can still sell out Wembley Stadium seriously quickly. Although they may not be as popular today, they were definitely the best thing to happen to popular music in the 90s. But today all you've got is this commercial rubbish churned out on the radio.

I think what Noel is getting at is Oasis are as widely known as the Stones now. How the notion that he is comparing their music can be extracted from that statement I don't know.

Before you go calling him an arrogant twat and calling his music "shite", think about why he is a multi millionaire. I think it's because his records have sold millions of units across the world perhaps? So if you make that immature statement that his music is "shite", there are millions of people in the world who would in fact disagree with that.

How many albums have you sold?

That's because the Rolling Stones are legends that were in their prime way back when, hence the t-shirts.

Noel Gallagher would be wrong to say he is a rock legend, just yet. But, what he has said shouldn't have sparked any of you peoples reactions if you had actually read more than the headline.

Exactly, all Noel is doing is exercising his earned right to be an arrogant rock star. He pretty much made Oasis what it was from the start so I'm pretty sure if any of you were in that position you'd be haughty and want to brag too. Honestly I would bet my life savings that most of you twats don't even know a thing about Oasis anyways and are most likely teenage guitar poser wannabes who think The Stones are the bees knees just because they're a big name and are classic rock. I mean c'mon, Keith better than Noel? The man doesn't even play with 6 strings on his guitar let alone knew how to play properly when he joined The Stones.

One more thing, I don't think you should not like a band because they are pricks. Is it just me or shouldn't the music come first?

On both accounts I think they fail miserably. The Rolling Stones have a far stronger back catalogue and they've had a profound impact on pop culture, far greater than Oasis could ever possibly lay claim to. I haven't really heard much from them since Wonderwall

They HAVE sold over 25 million copies of their first 2 cds alone (Definitely Maybe- 7.5 mil, Morning Glory- 18 mil) and are very often refered to as one of the biggest bands from the 90's. Tons of bands are influenced by these guys (like the arctic monkeys, Jet, The Killers, Kasabian, Drake Bell just to name a few, as well as almost every underground band to come out of Manchester in the 90's). The last time i checked, pearl jam and tool were big, but they weren't very influencial or really new-sounding... they were basically the result of grunge/post grunge sound.

Anyways on to the article, everyone here has to read it again. He says that Oasis is in the Stones' league b/c people recognize their name their sound as a band. Where I'm from (west. massachusetts), I'd say that's pretty accurate (not saying it's accurate everywhere you go, but still).

There's badarse self belief, which he and Liam had in the 90s and had every right to have. Now that they haven't written a good song in 10 years, saying sh*t like that is just wrong.

No to go listen to Champage Supernova yet again, reaffirming my faith in life.

On a side note: This has to be UG's best news day in ages. Blur and Jesus Lizard reuniting, Noel Gallagher being himself...so much win. All I need now is to hear Black Flag are reuniting with Henry Rollins, and I will be the happiest I have ever been in my life.

Oasis may not be the beatles or have shaped music in an influental way too much but its only obvious if you say they suck that you havent even listened to Definatley Maybe or Morning Glory. Noel writes very well written songs with a lasting quality that even after 15 years you can listen too and still sounds as good as it was then.

All of you are idiots too bc hes simply stating that Oasis are as known as RS are now which is true. But that doesnt say much about Oasis anyways bc the Rolling Stones have to be the shittist over blown band of all time.

You have to give them credit bc after 15 years they just came out with a new album and it did very well even in the US again debuting at #5 on the cluttered shite US top 40 along side with artists akon and fergie. Dig out your soul is easily the best rock album this year.

I'm sorry, but your remark about the Beatles was completely uncalled for, as they are one of the most revolutionary and incredibly inventive bands of all time.

On topic, I think even if he is in league with the Stones, it's a bit arrogant to say that. He's just a rockstar in his prime bragging about his band. John Lennon did it too ("We're more popular than Jesus now"). I like Oasis better than the Rolling Stones personally, but that doesn't mean I regard them in the same light.

i've seen oasis and the stones live, oasis was sloppy at best and the stones at least can put on an exciting and entertaining show. even in their older years they outplay oasis any day. liam's monotone voice bored me right out of the theater whereas mick, i couldnt stop cheering for, cause he knows how to entertain. and oasis are no where NEAR the same league as the stones. maybe in the same league as nickleback cause they both do the same thing and just re-hash the same song over and over again.

Oasis is an unforgettable band, i will give them that, like them or not you know who they are. and i think it's what he's trying to say. But there music is VERY forgettable. They have only had a couple singles that have had major staying power, but not any more then any alt-ballad of the 90s.

What the hell are you smoking man? I see a lot of ludicrous comments posted on this site, but this one is absolutely ridiculous. The best thing to happen to music in the 90s? I think Nirvana, Radiohead, Tool, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, and about a million other bands infinitely more influential and talented that Oasis would like to have a word with you...

The last time i checked, pearl jam and tool were big, but they weren't very influencial or really new-sounding... they were basically the result of grunge/post grunge sound.

it's funny how you didn't mention RATM or any of the other bands that mpeskett mentioned.
because Rage Against the Machine was both very influential and very new-sounding.

and tool?
how was that not new sounding?
i can't really think of any other band that has the same sound as Tool.

so, what was your argument again?
that they have sold a lot of albums and have influenced bands that sound almost identical to themselves?
wow, such a solid argument.

They have ZERO influence on music period as far as music goes. The only things they have going is Mick's showmanship (which anyone can pull off if they're drunk enough). Other than that pretty much all The Stones had going for them have left that overrated band. Other than that they've had NO influence on music in general. Anyone spouting otherwise is full of crap and is a classic rock sheep, end of story. Meanwhile Oasis has definitely had influence as people have pointed out, not to mention besides The Stone Roses and maybe Blur, Oasis was and is pretty much Brit Pop in general. Not to mention record sales show that they're quite popular (which Noel said in the article). Honestly most of you people are pathetic sheep who need to put down the guitar and get back in school because its not doing most of you any good.

Meh I wouldn't think so. I mean if you listen to Definitely Maybe that brashness really comes out, the first track, "Rock N Roll Star" alone shows where they're coming from. To be honest and fair I feel its just something he's exploiting because it comes with the territory. I guarantee you that given the situation most people would do the same thing (even though in the context of the article Noel was never in the wrong, he was just pointing out a fact).

And now that I think about it, it's a rather arbitrary article isn't it? Just a random piece from out of nowhere.

Yesterday (it was about 30 am) there was a MTV live special with the Chili Peppers and right after that Oasis in concert.
I couldn't sleep while the Peppers were playing, it was just an amazing show.
Then there was Oasis and after about two minutes I was asleep. Probably the most boring show I've ever seen in.

I was on one of the last concerts with the Stones. And they are older than both, Peppers AND Oasis, but they rocked the thing pitilessly.

Oasis talk the talk but haven't walked the walk for so many years and so many albums its actually become offensive. If you are going to talk so much shit Oasis, back it up with a good album...and if you can't....stop making music and let an original, more talented band take your place.

He's said that 'cos The Beatles are in the same league as the RS, if not bigger. Oasis are overrated. I saw them at wembley arena on tv, lyrics for songs in front of them. How average/mediocre is that?

These guys won't come anywhere near close simply because they're not original.

Oasis is in my opinion one of the most overrated bands EVER (maybe second to Journey). The Rolling Stones were amazingly influential and have a debt owed to them by every rock band since. Oasis preys on the styles of them, the Beatles, and Radiohead, and manages to make songs catchy enough to get on the radio and yet make no interesting contribution to the musical world.

I wouldn't hate them so much if they weren't so freaking arrogant! Come on, my favorite genre is PROG METAL and Oasis is STILL more pretentious. Now THAT takes effort.

I really don't think there is anything misunderstood about them because they're really not that hard to understand. They're just straight up rock and roll. Definitely nothing like Radiohead though, that comparison is completely lost on me. Old Radiohead, yes, maybe. But Radiohead has evolved so much since the 90's whereas Oasis has remained sounding pretty much the same.

It makes me laugh out loud that you ignorant death metals morons all sit here taking the rip outta the man from the band that is the very heart and soul of modern english music. Just because the music you guys are in to repeats the same "I am the devil, stab me in the head" theme over and over, doesn't give you the right to have a go at someone for being mind-blowingly positive. Why don't you get a grip? It doesn't take a gormless mong with a deck of synthesisers, a line-6 amp and a drop C tuning to think that life can be a drag at times, but it takes a lot more to go and write a song about everyday life on an acoustic guitar and appeal to the ordinary people, listen after listen.
I'm not saying that all metal etcetera is crap, because it obviously is a skill in itself to play correctly, but don't you dare call it music.

"Everything The Beatles did, The Stones did 6 months later." - JL.

Just thought i'd throw that into the ring seeing as people are intent on bringing The Beatles into this little debate.

Are Oasis as popular as The Stones were in their heyday? No.

Now, it would be pointless to raise the question of who has sold the more albums seeing as The Stones have been playing and recording since the 1800's or some shit. I do think Oasis have the vast majority of better songs but i also think Noel has yet to pen a song as beautiful as Wild Horses or a track as cultivating as Paint It Black.

Mick Jagger is a tool.

Noel Gallagher is a tool.

I think we can all agree this debate is a waste of time. I'm bored.

The posters comments saying The Beatles "suck" are *SO* Inaccurate & *Totally* *Ignorant*!!!! You don't know what you are talking about at all!!!! I have been a huge highly impressed Beatles fan especially a big John Lennon & Paul McCartney fan since I was 9, I got my first Beatles book for my 11th birthday, & I had every Beatles album by age 13.

I was only 5 when they broke up too. When I was 11 I had a music teacher ask us students to guess what music artists he was talking about, when he said they were genuises & they wrote 200 songs most of them great, acclaimed popular songs in just an 8 year recording career, & I said, John Lennon & Paul McCartney, The Beatles & he said yes thats right!

The Beatles are the most critically acclaimed, popular, *Rock* band *ever* & for darn good reasons, & they are the most covered music artists ever! Everyone from Motown, to jazz, classicial, rock, pop, & even heavy metal has recorded their great timeless music! There are many music professors at good universities who teach college courses on what brilliant, innovative, creative & prolific singer song writers they were.

One of them is award wining music professor & classical composer Dr.Glenn Gass at Indiana University who has been teaching a course on rock music & The Beatles brilliance since 1982.

Even Eric Clapton says in an online 1977 interview that John Lennon was a pretty good guitar player, & he would have known since he played live in concerts with John as a member of his 1969 Plastic Ono Band! And both John & Paul are also as The All Music Guide says in their excellent Beatles biograohy, not only such great song composers, but they were both among the best & most expressive singers in rock.

And many well known accomplished bass players including Stanley Clarke, Sting, Will Lee, Billy Sheehan, & Wilco's John Stirratt and other musicians recognize Paul McCartney as one of the best, most creartive melodic bass players ever! I could on with more information but there's too much to write that debunks the ignorant cr*p you said!

youwon'tseeme wrote on 01/25/2009 - 05:57 pm / quote |
I just noticed I made a few typing mistakes, I really wish there was an edit buton on here!

But I want to add that The Rolling Stones were good friends with & big fans of The Beatles. Mick Jagger was at 4 Beatles recording sessions & Keith Richards was at 2 of those with him including the TV broadcast of ALL YOU Need Is Love & A Day In The Life in 1967. The Beatles even wrote one of The Rolling Stones first hits,I Wanna Be You're Man in late 1963.Mick Jagger was also with The Beatles in Bangor in August 1967 to study meditation with the Maharishi when they got the phone call that their manager Brian Epstein was found dead.

Also The Beatles worked their a**es off playing 8 hoyrs a night taking speed pills just to stay awake & play in the sleazy rough clubs in Hamburg Germany, smoking, cursing,on stage wearing tight black leather pants & jackets. And they were very popular in these German clubs even with the gangster thugs who often went in them. And they were popular playing in The Cavern Club in Liverpool before their manager Brian Epstein created their fake cleaned up image.

Even Ozzy Osbourne says, That The Beatles Are The Greatest Band To Ever Walk The Earth & he says not loving them is like not loving oxogen.

The Beatles are very popular with people in their teens & 20's both guys & girls on Rate Your Music, Last.FM where their fan group has over 3,000 members more guys than girls, & the average age is 22 years old, & The Beatles were the 1 most listened to music artists on Last.FM in 2006,2007 & 2008! They are also very popular with people in their teens & 20's & 30's on YouTube. On all of these sites, many of these young people are calling The Beatles The Greatest Band Of All Time!

Bob Dylan still praises John and Paul as among the greatest singers and song writers ever and he praised George Harrison too as a great song writer also and Bob is still a big Beatles fan he said all of this just last year.

youwon'tseeme wrote on 01/25/2009 - 06:13 pm / quote |
And to the guy who said he thinks that John,Paul, George & Ringo's solo work was better than The Beatles as a group, well even though John, Paul and even some of George's solo work in the early-mid 1970's was very good & great, most people and just about every rock music critic says that the combination of the 4 of them but especially of John & Paul was when they were the greatest & wrote & played their best.

And I found over 50 former Beatles haters on different message boards who are now big Beatles fans! I never commmunicated with them, but they posted that they had a lot of ignorant misperceptions of them & hadn't even heard most of their great music.

youwon'tseeme wrote on 01/25/2009 - 06:26 pm / quote |
I meant to say that The Beatles played 8 hours a night in the German clubs for 2 years before they made it big. A musician recently posted on a message board, asking people to watch The Beatles Anthology Video series and see how massively talented The Beatles as a rock band really were.

Also on university of Indiana's music professor Dr.Glen Gass's site about his Beatles course it says the point of this course is to get students to have a better appreciation of this extraordinary group and their remarkable recordings and song writing partnership of John & Paul.

Dr.Gary Kendal's Beatles course at North Western University is the most requested course there too.
