rating: 0 / votes: 0

Oasis claimed the top three positions in a poll of the best British songs of all time.

Live Forever came in at number one, followed by Wonderwall and Don't Look Back In Anger.

A fourth Oasis song, Champagne Supernova, also made it into the top 10.

The poll was voted for by several thousand Xfm listeners.

Paul Jackson, group programming director for The Xfm Network said: "Oasis undoubtedly has one of the most significant catalogues of all time."

The survey was dominated by the North of England, with the Stone Roses, The Verve, Joy Division and the Arctic Monkeys riding high as well as Oasis.

Here are the top 10 best British songs, according to the survey:

01. Live Forever - Oasis
02. Wonderwall - Oasis
03. Don't Look Back In Anger - Oasis
04. I Am the Resurrection - Stone Roses
05. Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
06. Bitter Sweet Symphony - The Verve
07. My Generation - The Who
08. I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor - Arctic Monkeys
09. London Calling - The Clash
10. Champagne Supernova - Oasis

Dire Straits ? Led Zeppelin ? The Beatles ? The Police ?

And many more that should have been on that list.

Okay this list is a bit stupid, let's make our own! Here's some ideas:
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Black Sabbath - Iron Man
The Rolling Stones - Satisfaction
Iron Maiden - The Number Of The Beast
The Beatles - Hey Jude
The Beatles - Come Together (plus so many other Beatles tracks I could list)

Oh and John Lennon - Imagine

Part of me wonders if this was made just to anger people.. (as most 'best of' lists are)

The fact that the Beatles and Zeppelin aren't in the top ten says it all.

I will say though, "Live Forever" is my favorite Oasis tune... it just doesn't belong at number 1.

Yeah, that's pretty ridiculous. I would like to see a breakdown of the demographics of xfm listeners. My guess is that they tend to be young, in which case this poll is not only non-representative of the public at large (which is arguably the case with any poll), but also reflects poor education.

i think the list is retaining to the Brit-Pop genre, not just any british band. even then, that still makes this list shit. wheres blur? catherine wheel? feeder? or any shoegazer band? my pick would have to be Black Metallic by Catherine Wheel. it's such a great song, fits in with britpop, and was the bands biggest song.

EC_AL_JH_GH wrote on 05/26/2009 - 10:08 pm / quote |
*Cough*QUEEN*Cough* Anyways, I think that SeattleJEM7 is probably right, this list is directed at Brit-Pop... Which makes it sad that they claim that this is the best British songs.

This is why the music industry sucks these days because everyone chooses to keep looking back on the freakin past... Led Zeppelin... The Beatles... freaking hell its been at least 40 years since the start of most of those bands, move on!!!!! How irrelevant is that music to todays generation it says nothing to us!!! Sure pop music sucks these day but thats because the only people who are supporting the future are all the hip hop ppl etc.

Haha and I watched an interview where Oasis said they were better than bands such as U2 and way better than the chili's. Not try to be biased to Oasis but if you dont think they're good, they have sold more records than fleetwood mac and U2 and thats rediculous considering that oasis exist now in a time of excessive file sharing

Has any listener of Xfm ever heard of a) Led Zeppelin b) The Rolling Stones c) The Beatles or d) Every other band from Britain better than Oasis?

Is this Tim Lovejoy's list of fave tunes? XFM must be a total gaggle of sh*te if this is the best they could come up. No mention of Beatles, Stones, Police, Zeppelin. Oasis are fine but after a while i just wanna try self harming. BEST BRITISH SONGS EVER? You're all drunk.

nailsarecruel wrote on 05/28/2009 - 10:48 am / quote |
Best undisputed British song ever:
Pink Floyd - Time

Some good runners up:
Genesis - Entangled
Dire Straits - Romeo & Juliet.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Gallaghers think XFM's listeners are a bit soft in the head, though.

I must say, Live forever is a very god song, but its suprising to see it there.

plus i personally think Oasis are the best British band EVER to come around, they made britpop "Britpop" and they made english music "English"

Lol at all the idiots who can't get with the program.

Props to Oasis snagging the top 3 (especially happy to see I Am The Resurrection at number 4, The Stone Roses are definitely not forgotten!) Kinda surprised that Artic Monkeys made the top 10 but not Muse but oh well thats life.

Oasis are my favourite band ever and Live Forever is my favourite song ever, but I know other British Songs songs like Stairway to Heaven, Hey Jude, Tears In Heaven, Imagine etc. will always be recognised as much better songs.

Also Don't Look Back In Anger is much better than Wonderwall
