Paul McCartney Refuses To Apologise For Bush Gag

artist: paul mccartney date: 06/25/2010 category: general music news
rating: 0 / votes: 0

Sir Paul McCartney is refusing to apologise for a joke he made about former President George W. Bush during an appearance at the White House earlier this month (June 10).

The Beatles legend poked fun at the ex-leader's intellect as he became the first non-American to collect the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from Bush's successor, President Barack Obama on 2 June.

McCartney said, "After the last eight years, it's great to have a President who knows where the library is."

The comments infuriated top US politician John Boehner, who demanded McCartney make a public apology for the gag.

But the singer has now spoken out about the incident, insisting his comments shouldn't be taken so seriously - because it was just "a joke".

He says, "I said that on purpose. And now all this (criticism), like I'm going to care? It was a joke. Hello, anybody there? It's a joke.

"Has anyone ever watched Saturday Night Live? They joke about Bush all the time. As for a public apology, are they kidding? I was in two minds whether to say it and I actually waited until the President had gone because I didn't want to embarrass him or his family. But hey, come on, it's rock and roll. It wasn't a religious meeting and I'm allowed to make jokes."

Thanks for the report to Contactmusic.com.

John Boehner can blow it out of his ass. The Dems aren't much better but these Republicans act like a bunch of little girls most of the time.

"HE HURT MY WITTY BITTY FEELINGS!!"

Way to go McCartney, I tip my hat in your direction.

Macca gains much respect from me with this. Why should he have to apologise? It doesn't matter if he was joking or not because we have a great liberty in the west called freedom of speach.

No, going to a foreign country and accepting a prestigious award and then using the occasion to mock ANYTHING about that country is being a douchebag. This is to be expected from the retards in Hollywood but I held Paul to a higher standard. My bad!

Paul McCartney can just do whatever he wants. Even Kanye West got away with bigger accusations.
He'll look up class though. He knows the name, he'll look up the number.

And Obama didnt even read the ****ing thing. It was over a thousand pages! What idiots make a thousand page bill!

I agree, the comment he made was not a huge deal and it won't really affect anything, but I believe he would have been better off not saying it. Yes, free speech exists and we can use it, but it's a matter of being polite. It's not like he was on the street or being interviewed on television, he was accepting an award at the WHITE HOUSE!! It doesn't matter if everyone in the room agreed with his comment, you should take the high road and just say thanks for the award. Dont use that time to beat a dead horse.

Except that Britain developed the tank, which played a crucial role on offensives, as it made trench warfare obsolete.

To go back to your first comment, to say that America was the only reason that the Allied Force's won over in WWII is rather ignorant in my opinion. We did just find without any American assistance in the Battle of Britain for example.

1) As a Libertarian, I wasn't much a fan of Bush either (bailouts, the wild spending, no child left behind, medicare expansion, etc.); however, I'm fairly certain Bush doesn't give a rat's ass what McCartney thinks or what all the predictable ass clowns on here spouting "I hate Bush", "Bush was a moron", "Bush was stupid", "Man, Bush is why I'm proud to be Canadian" bla, bla, bla thinks. We get it. It's getting old. He's not the president anymore, and you're getting more cliche and longer in the tooth than Nickelback.

2) I don't think McCartney should apologize either 'cause it was a joke, and Boehner was being overdramatic... albeit a joke that strikes me as odd considering Laura Bush was formerly a librarian.

3) The Beatles have always been, still is, and always will be my favorite group... Paul McCartney is the most influential and most innovative bass player of rock and roll... That being said, I'd never take a political opinion seriously from someone who's most intellectually stimulating song was "Hello, Goodbye"... Hey, not hating the song, it's great, but even John Lennon said McCartney's songwriting style was just sissy granny shit.

Bottom line, that was a night where people wanna have fun, relax, enjoy the music, congratulate those awarded, and Paul had to say something we've already heard a million times before. I just wanna hear some Beatles tunes. I could care less what he thinks about Bush, but whatever, time to move on.

Let me just say, I'd take Bush over Obama any day. It's funny actually, because if he made the slightest remard about Obama, the President would be crying while Biden fixed him a cup of decafinated coffee. I know everyone hated Bush blah blah, but he's a good guy, and probably doesn't even care about this overrated musician's obnoxious remark.

Who cares if Bush is a good guy? (btw, killing thousands of innocent lives doesn't sound "good")

He ****ing sucked as a leader, how could you possibly take him over Obama. Obama actually has common sense and brains for that matter.

common sense and brains?! that guy hasnt done much since hes been in office. oh wait. he got a Nobel peace prize. for what? being black? i know MILLIONS of black mean who are more black than he is. the ONLY thing obama does better than Bush is speaking in public. he hasnt done anything he said he would do as president.

If by having done "nothing" in office so far you mean leading the congress in two of its most productive years in the past half century, then sure "nothing". As for the president only being a figurehead that signs the bills, this is simply a misunderstanding of the way things work legislatively, and represents the misinformation of the public, generally leading to the president getting to little of credit for the things he accomplishes legislatively, and all the while getting slammed for continuing to serve as the "figurehead" at times, even when there are disasters like the oil spill. Presidents are not super people, they still have to do stupid parts of the job, that doesn't stop with a disaster. Period.
As for what he has accomplished-
-The Stimulus Bill- Has kept state and local governments from collapse the last two years, and was not a "Bailout" for Wallstreet, The Tarp funds which gave the banks money was under George Bush so stop blaming Obama for it, especially since it was one of the most important things Bush actually did.
-The Healthcare Bill-
The first largescale healthcare bill passed since the 1960's, against a completely partisan congress, it is not perfect, but it is a huge accomplishment and if it had not passed it would have likely broken the presidency for the rest of his term.
-Financial Regulation-
Obviously needed after deregulation of the past 30 years caused the worst financial disaster since the great depression. Basically just returned regulations put in place after the depression but were slowly torn down starting in the 1980s with Reagan. Again passed mostly partisan, though a few moderates actually voted for it from the right.
These are just the large accomplishments and they alone amount to more than that has happened in the past twenty years easily.
Sorry for the rant I have felt the need to release it for awhile, and sorry for any typos its late.

President Bush set the record for most vacation time spent as a U.S. president. Bush wasn't as bad as he is made out to be at times so if you are going to try and defend him try to actually highlight some of his better decisions like the surge in Iraq which has proven to be a better decision than most thought it would be (including Obama by the way).

The way it seems from over here there are three types of americans (At least in debates - don't mistake this as being narrowminded, I'm just tryin to compare the likes of Michael Moore to G.W. Bush): 1) The Redneck Republicans; 2) The selfrighteous democrats 3) The rest who sit around and vote for pretty much annyone and have already realized how stupid it is to discuss such a matter.... If I were American I'd probably be the latter.... I'm Not sayin' that I'm smarter than y'all but it seems pretty ****in' stupid to argue over a joke that by some will be regarded as a mistake and by others a heoric act. I am very proud to be American, but it is people like you two who make that embarrassing sometimes. @Anatar. Americans do not go over and make fun of other countries because they know that it can be thrown right back at them. I love America, but because of Bush, and people like you and METAL MIKEY, we are a very easy country to poke fun at. So thank you guys, for continuing to give comic ammunition to people from other countries. Way to help your cause

also...

I love America and *****s like Bush have made me embarrassed to admit i'm from the states. Bush was a complete dipshit. In case no one noticed we're trillions of dollars in debt, every other country owns our ass, and the Bush administration metaphorically wiped their ass with our constitution. You remember the patriot act? We invaded Iraq with no reason at all. Just because Bush had a "hunch" they were making WMD's. The UN weapons inspectors did not find any evidence of this. Also to people who are saying Obama hasn't done anything have you ever heard of this thing called Congress? Well let me explain-Congress has to look over, edit, and approve bills. HALF MAYBE EVEN MORE OF OUR CONGRESSMAN DON'T EVEN READ THEM. Not to mention congress has only 4 sessions a year which means that it can take an exceptional amount of time to pass bills and by the time they are passed the whiny little bitches that we've elected have shaped them into something that doesn't even resemble the original document. Obama has at least tried to resolve some issues and as a world leader it's only common courtesy to meet with the world's highly regarded people.

As for Sir Paul, good job for not giving in. The people who say he should apologize are morons. Every little thing you think is offensive and shouldn't be said YOU are the ones who are ****ing this country and taking away our freedoms.

The thing is, no one is begrudging Sir Paul for having his own opinion, nor stating it in public. But honestly, making comments like that at the White House is in poor taste- that's all I'm saying. If he'd said it at a concert there'd be nothing to discuss here.

And another thing, resorting to trash language and calling people names like "retarded" and "idiot" just because they don't share your opinion is just sad. If the only way you can back up your position is to ridicule the other person, it says a lot about who you are, what you know and the level of your maturity. Not much more to say, I'm afraid.

While it is kind of funny, I find it to be tasteless and classless. While its obvious that Bush was not the brightest of our Nations presidents, the man did graduate from Harvard Business school, and Yale university. I dont think most people here can match those credentials, or would have been able to have do a better job running the country. Just reading the above comments shows me that most of the people hating on Paul are either insane(hassler) or totally uninformed about the past 8 years in American History (Phycopath, AicFaLife, Crazy Ty). Now I'm a German currently living in America so with that neutral perspective just let me say: Bush is so stupid it's not even funny, we all know it, he's responsible or thousands of deaths that he saw fit to throw away for Kuwaiti oil. He only got into Yale because his dad was governor at the time. Obama showed a lot of promise, hasn't quite lived up to it in the first year, slightly dissapointed, he did however make it in to Harvard Law school without a rich, powerful, well connected daddy, so I can't doubt his intelligence. Most Ugers are about 12-13 and American so this huge fight is to be expected.

First off let me say that I love Paul, always have. But this was just plain stupid of him. Bush wasn't even his president so I always thought it was strange that he felt the need to voice his disapproval of him in all regards. And it's not like Obama has been the savior many expected (myself included). He really hasn't done anything for us, I honestly think that we could've put anyone in the White House and Paul would have liked him better simply because it was a change from Bush.

You have less intelligence that a cold bowl of porridge.

As for the comments saying that McCartney had no place to make such comments - remember the fact that Bush's decisions, actions and inherent stupidty had a direct impact on the rest of the planet. It's not only American forces out there fighting and dying - but it is because of the American's that other nations are as involved as they are.

Every little thing you think is offensive and shouldn't be said YOU are the ones who are ****ing this country and taking away our freedoms.

so i didnt take the time to read all the comments but did anyone catch this?
This guy saying that the IRAQ war was to fight terror. Hussien ruled with an iron fist, Al-Queda was a threat to his power, therefore was almost no Al-Queda in iraq, anywhere. The Iraq war was and still is a waste of good men and women.

And i dont think people should care so much about what paul mccartney says, he's a legend, but is his opinion really gunna sway anyone, i hope not. If you make your political opinion based on a musicians then you need to have your head checked.

People have been using music as a means to address political issues for over 50 years now. You need to grow up and realize people are entitled to have their own opinions. McCartney doesn't like Bush, and he's entitled to say so. He'd be equally entitled to say he doesn't like Obama.

Yeah, McCartney has the right to say whatever he wants to say, but I wanna see people get after him on national TV like the liberals do when Ted Nugent speaks the truth.

Oh, buddy, they didn't give him crap about a hurricane. They gave him crap that he didn't act on reports he received 5 days before it hit that stated that the levies in New Orleans would give. They gave him crap because he appointed a completely unqualifeed man to head FEMA. They gave him crap because he let that man bungle the rescue operations for weeks. They gave him crap because his system of nepotism, cronyism, and habit of ignoring information that did not conform to his world view has managed to cost thousands of Americans their lives in a pointless war, not to mention potentially hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. It has also led to an immeasurable decay of institutions upon which succesful governance relies, such as the CIA (a shadow of its former self, largely due to Bush's negligence). Not to mention the incredible and unprecedented injury to the good name of the United States. Ask Colin Powell about that one some time. He'll give you an earful.

^ You forgot about the illegal wiretappings, the subversion of the fourth amendment, the illegal arrests of hundreds of innocent iraqis, prisoner torture, political firings, the appointment of an absolute thug to position of vice president, allowing that man to run roughshod over the idea of separation of powers, allowing that man to grant nearly unlimited military contracts to the company he was the former CEO of, repeated lying to Congress, repeated lying to the American people, and the fact that there is a significant chance that the election of 2000 was stolen, given that the state where the major conflict of vote counts was in Florida, which his brother was the governor of, and the fact that the first news anchor (on Fox News of course) to call the election for Bush in 2000 (John Ellis) was his cousin.

I personally can't imagine why people might want to insult Bush.

On topic, I think perhaps it was a bit of an error of judgement on Sir Paul's behalf, but honestly, if you can't realise (see the 's' there??) what a joke is, and not many people can these days, you need to take a good long look at yourself in the mirror and wonder where it all went wrong.
