Bit Harsh If I say so myself

in any interviews i've seen with Bono (Musically Speaking) he's been a down to earth guy, who can sing pretty darn well if you ask me, and yes, he does go on about poverty, but at least he keeps it aside from the music he makes with U2.

and im sure for $390 (£200) he isn't going to opt out of public life

what about Bob Geldof? and all these other famous charity workers?

C'mon world, you gotta be kidding with this one

Funny how just because their seen as 'mainstream', people rag on them just to appear like they know a lot. If you took the time to listen to all their material, not just the few singles that are released, you'd realise just how talented they (yes, Bono included) actually are.

Doesn't mean you have to like them, but come on, this is no Fall Out Boy; these guys are professional and skilled musicians who just happen to be popular. So what? Good on em. And Bono's charity ventures; so what? He's done far more to help dying children then any of us ever will, or the site mentioned for that matter. What a joke.

its a disgrace, theyre saying that the money is goin to charity when it obviously wont cos hes hardly going to retire.

Yes, Bono may get a bit preachy, but he does a whole lot more for this world than 90% of other musicians out there. He actually GOES to Africa. A lot. I don't think he would continue his efforts if it weren't doing any good at all. You guys can call him names all you want, but like it or not, U2 was a revolutionary band, and they make decent music. Bono uses the money that he makes to actually HELP people. God forbid, I know! Rather than complain about the world, he helps it.

This would never work for Bono, because he's a worthwhile person. I say we make a petition for Pete Wentz, though! That's something the world could get behind.

What a bunch of floppy dildos. I myself am a bit on the border with Bono's situation. He gives lots of charity money to African countries, and at least he,unlike others, cares about these people... but he's naive. How does he know that the grown distant, corrupt governments aren't hording all of the money? Also, bono uses this charity thing to sucker people into buy stuff.

Either way, I don't care whether he gets kicked out of public. But if they stop making U2 albums shits gonna hit the fan >

No. Bono works to eliminate poverty through support of the World Band and IFM, which, as any basic research will denote, make their money of continuing cycles of poverty. I'm not going to go into all the depth about this again, but I've done it before on this site on a review of his efforts to "help" impoverished nations. It boils down to one of two things: He is a knowing and complacent contributor to the problem or he is simply a postindustrialist sod who is swept up in a firestorm of false information and white guilt.

Wow. Let Bono do what he wants. He actually tried to do something with all his money and fame, and he has done quite a lot. People have no ****ing business telling him what he can and can't do. And I don't think he will retire for a measly $1000 to charity, when he give much more. Plus U2 is one of the only good consistent bands still around. Sure, they have some lame songs here and there, but for the most part, they keep rock alive.

This is stupid. Bono does more for the world than the majority of celebrities. People keep saying he's only in it for the fame, but I assure you, he's not. He's been doing this sort of work for two and a half decades already. It's not just some phase he's going through because people stopped listening to his music as much. I've heard he actually discourages African radio stations from playing U2's music just because of his charity work.

For the most part, he does keep his music separated from the politics. Live, he only takes away a couple minutes to "preach." It's really not a big deal. What he's trying to do is spread awareness here, and what better way than to use your own fame? If you let a minute or two of preaching kill your two hour long concert experience, your just way too sensitive. As far as I know, I can only remember one song that was directly related to his politics (Crumbs From Your Table, which I didn't really like anyway). He's not shoving it down anyones throats.

And you know what? The guy is an egotistical megalomaniac. Of course he is, he's one of the biggest rock stars in the world. Hell, if your going to hate him just because he comes off as cocky, theres hundreds of other celebrities you should be after that are a lot worse, and I bet most of those guys haven't even done half the work Bono has done.

And enough of the hypocrisy charges. He has never asked that you give up your lifestyle to change the world. He's a rock star, he's going to live like a rock star. He's a human being, not a saint. He only asks that if everyone gave just a little bit, we could make a huge difference.

He's not doing this to boost his own fame. He's using his own fame to boost awareness to the issues in Africa. I'm not going to say that everything he does over there is the best way to handle things, but he sure as hell does more good, a lot more good, than any possible harm people keep talking about. But people just seem to love to hate.

Anyone who makes a sweeping comment like that seriously, is ignorant. Bono talks about it, he doesn't really do much. Geldof loses a ton of money, like with Live 8. Bono starts caring when he's got a new album out soon
Draken wrote:

Geldof actually seems to care. He actually does something, like organise massive charity concerts. Bono just goes on for eternity about how everyone should do what they can, whilst he's living in grotesque luxury.

A successful doctor bullshitting like him? Yes I would. And music and politics can be combined. If a lyricist is politically minded they should just stop? Shut up.

Of course unless this petition raises more than $1,000 (about the cost of a pair of those fancy Italian boots Bono wears) he’ll argue that he can make a bigger impact remaining in the public’s eye. Of course, giving money directly to charity organizations is a much better way to help Africa. But RED is only supposed to give consumers another choice. If I'm going to buy a phone, I'll feel better buying the one associated with RED. No one is saying RED is going to save the world, it's just another little step in the fight against poverty. Yes, it's a very commercialized concept, but why fight the corporations, when you can get them to help a good cause? It's stupid to ignore such a good opportunity just because its considered some "evil corporation" by some people.

His music and his charity work are two different matters. Of course the commercials are sponsored by U2, the U2 frontman is involved in them. I really do doubt he's doing this work for the attention. But even if he is, it's a smart business move, and it's doing good for the world.

And no, he never tells others to do everything. That's simply not smart. No ones going to give everything to the work going on in Africa. He's saying if everyone did a little, we could make a huge difference. That's what the RED campaign is, a little bit at a time.

Apparently, if you want to find poverty, you have to be poor yourself. Also, because your a rock star fighting poverty, you can't live the life of a rock star. You can't make strategic business moves, or else you'll be considered a hypocrite. Never mind that you are more active than 99% of other people, including others who are just as capable of doing what he does. Never mind that at least you can put your fame towards a good cause.

Then go on a U2 reunion tour, and be not-retired anymore. What then mofos?

i cant be bothered reading through every one of these posts, but every one of you ignorant fools who claim this is a scam are ill-informed. i actually WENT to the site, and you do not pay the money up front - you pledge it. This means if bono doesn't retire as a result of this petition, the pledges won't be collected.

"We’ll all pledge donations to the Global Fund, but no pledges are collected until Bono retires from public life."

i support the petition, i don't see why it needs to involve money, because then the argument is that Bono will just donate more. If it was just a count of how many people wanted him to retire, then you'd see results.

Lolol.

Did any of you who are defending Bono actually read the information on the petition site?

What this man is doing to "help" the global relief effort is a disgusting display of commercialism at it's finest.

The one Dell ad in particular really makes me sick.

Why must the world buy into this RED crap? Just donate to AIDS research instead of wasting your money on a stupid phone or computer that's painted red.

Do you want to know something about the internet? Not everything you hear is the truth. To me, this seems more like a scam to get people to "donate" to "stop" Bono. I mean, why in hell would you not donate the money if he doesn't retire? Sounds like a whole mess of bullshit to me.

I'm not saying I'm donating money.

I'm just saying that I personally think Bono sucks, and his crappy little RED campaign is nothing more than a scam to garner more interest in his band.

Ever notice how all of the commercials and products are sponsored by U2?

Come on people, open your eyes.

Black Hole Sun, read this you dumb prick. No, not a huge fan of Bono, but he does more than all of us ever will. Sure, it may be for the image, but it's still something. If I save someones life because I thought he might reward me, you think it matters to that man that I did it for money? No, he's just happy he's alive. If he's doing it for the image, then he might as well not do it. It's sad that it takes "having an image" to get something accomplished. Either do something or don't, but don't use an image to guilt others into doing something.

Spreading awareness seems to be a double-edged sword for Bono. It requires that you get yourself out there, and that you grab the people's attention. He achieves this through his fame, and arguably, his music, but this causes people to accuse him of only promoting his self-image. I really believe he's tried to keep his own affairs out of his cause. But being who he is, a rock star, it's inevitable that his career is going to be brought up in interviews, promotions, etc. Like I've said before, his music is sometimes used as a tool to get his message out there, but it is usually kept to a minimum.

I don't care what Bono does as long as I don't have to hear his stupid preaching or his crappy singing.

Hey Bono why dont you move your recording back to the UK if you are so worried about poverty and exploiting cheap labour. Why move to a country to keep the wage price down so you can make more money?

If Bono wants me to help him with anything then I want him to give me his three private jets. Then he can sit with everyone in economy class and reflect on how great he is by not using so much fuel but sharing it with others.
