Phil Conalane For Velvet Revolver Lead Singer

A rumour has reached Classic Rock that the singer Velvet Revolver are seeking to recruit to replace Scott Weiland is Irishman Phil Conalane from Million Dollar Reload.

Conalane was apparently recommended to Velvet Revolver by ex-Guns N’ Roses drummer Steven Adler, and also by Stone Gods, the band formed from the ashes of The Darkness.

Stone Gods reportedly tried to recruit Conalane themselves when Justin Hawkins left The Darkness.

Classic Rock’s source, who claims to be in contact with an insider at Velvet Revolver’s management, tells us:

"Though a surprising choice, Phil is experienced but relatively unknown on the international stage, which would fit Velvet Revolver’s bill of fresh blood as they try to rebuild their career following the disappointing sales of their last album, Libertad, and the GN’R return that has left them reeling.

"Phil is also well known as a good songwriter, something that scuppered Velvet Revolver’s plans when previously they tried to bring in the less-than-prolific Josh Todd of Buckcherry.

"At the recent Classic Rock Awards in London, Slash was seen talking to Phil’s record company representative for quite a while."

Of course, we realise this might just be a crafty publicity stunt by Million Dollar Reload. More on this news as soon as we have it…

And I wonder who classic rock's source is; saying that Chinese Democracy has left them reeling. I doubt anyone in Velvet actually gives a damn about that record, at leats in a commercial sense.

Firstly, this is like the first mention of Stone Gods in a direct news article... thats a bit pathetic, they should have been mentioned ages ago. Secondly, Ritchie Edwards was hired as the Stone Gods singer 30 minutes after Justin quit The Darkness, Conalane was never approached by them.

i think itd be a good fit, especially if slash gets back to his bluesy riffing like he used to do in GnR. this guy has kinda the old school Bon Scott vibe to him which is sweet, and they need an unknown guy who isnt an arrogant prick

I really liked Lenny Kravitz when the rumour was going around but Conalane will do. It seems that they're going for the whole "super charismatic" frontman and I think that there are too many egos to begin with. Interesting choice though, we'll see how it turns out.

Whoa!? when did The Darkness break up? bummer. I really liked them. Justin had an amazing voice oh well. I really like this guy's voice though he'll fit in I just hope they can come up with an album that was as good as Contraband and out sell Axl please.

That's all well and good, but it's going to, in my opinion, take more than just a new singer. I think Velvet Revolver, Slash in particular, need to really go back to the classic rock roots that got them there. Libertad, if you really listen to it, is nothing more than an album of radio songs, not real rock and roll. Hopefully, this new kid will bring that sense of youth back to the band and revitalize them all. I love Slash, he is the reason I started playing guitar, but there honestly was not a single thing he did on Libertad that I like, and when that happens, a totally new direction needs to be taken, and like I said, hopefully this new guy will be the driver.

I agree. I'm pretty sure they will go in a new direction. I'm not a big fan of Libertad either, but you can't deny that Contraband is a very good rock album. It has those classic roots, but modernised to a certain point. I really liked Contraband.

Of course he will sound a bit like Bon Scot from AC/DC. The Irish and Scottish accents are very similar in certain regions of both countries.
