RATM Perform New Song |

After last week’s cancellation of the band’s surprise performance in front of the Republican National Convention in Minnesota, many fans left wondering if the band would still be able to play their show scheduled at the Target Center the following night. Well luckily the band performed as intended, but not without a surprise for those in attendance.
Midway through their set the band unveiled a new song about the people of New Orleans during the devastating Hurricane Katrina. The song was reportedly mellower than is usual from the band, but still displayed guitarist Tom Morello’s love of effects pedals. This only fueled rumors that the band is working on new material for a new record.
Rage Against The Machine broke up in 2000 due to internal conflicts. Since then vocalist Zach De La Rocha went on to pursue solo activities and recorded an EP with former Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore under the pseudonym “One Day As A Lion”. Meanwhile the rest of the band joined up with Chris Cornell to form the equally short-lived Audioslave. After the break-up of Audioslave in 2007, the band reunited to continue touring and have been dodging rumors of a new album ever since.
Report by David Lowe-Bianco.

: I was at the show and heard the song. It was great. Mellow and very powerful. Tom was awesome throughout. Overall, the show was definitaly top 2 shows I've ever seen. They played a 2 and a half hour set that nobody wanted to end. The had the crowd wrapped around their fingers.. There is not a chance anyone left even slightly disappointed. Even those who aren't fans would have gotten something out of this show, guaranteed.POSTED: 09/09/2008 - 11:46 am / quote |

How are they 'equally' short-lived? One Day as a Lion put out their first release less than two months ago whereas Audioslave was around for about 7 years.
Anyway, its awesome to hear Rage is working on new stuff. It still would've been nice to have them around for the majority of the Bush administration though.POSTED: 09/09/2008 - 12:05 pm / quote |

: "Equally short-lived"
I think 3 LPs, Grammy nominations, Gold albums, and a few tours thrown in do not equate to 1 EP. I could be wrong, I'm no mathemagician.
Don't get me wrong, I love the ODAAL project, but come on, give credit where credit is due.
All that said, the second coming of Christ will manifest itself in a new Rage album.POSTED: 09/09/2008 - 12:08 pm / quote |

: If this was played before born of a broken man, which I'm almost certain it was from checking the setlist, then they played this at Reading Festival 2008.
I thought it was just an extended intro/jam to BoaBM as the lyrics referenced his father. Something along the lines of "I'm coming to see you father"POSTED: 09/09/2008 - 12:46 pm / quote |

Now, I would say to stop arguing, but it does produce absolutely hilarious results. For example, someone responding to a guy calling RATM commies by saying "They played the republican convention, that makes them conservative, dumbass."POSTED: 09/09/2008 - 01:09 pm / quote |

: I read the interview in the LA times with Zach last week. Based on what he was saying I wouldn't hold my breath for a new album, maybe a single on a live dvd or something. Hes pretty dedicated to ODAAL and Tom has "The Night Watchman" thing going on so it might be awhile. Heard the show was classic.

: Well, for starters, calling One Day As A Lion seems like a false statement, seeing as Zach has said that he and John are trying to get a band together for things like live dates and stuff. Also, that new song just sounds like a jam. Its cool, but it doesn't seem... cohesive enough to feel like a proper song. Its hard to explain. Just sounds like a live jam to me, nothing more. I'd love to hear a new Rage album though.POSTED: 09/09/2008 - 02:32 pm / quote |

The band's name derives from an infamous black and white graffiti photograph taken by Chicano photographer George Rodriguez in 1970 with a caption reading "it's better to live one day as a lion, than a thousand years as a lamb."
