RHCP Nominated For Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

Funk-rockers Red Hot Chili Peppers are amongst the acts to make the shortlist for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Rock 'n' roll will never die, but to make sure it's not forgotten there's a handy museum. The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame contains artefacts and memorabilia from throughout the sixty year life of rock music.

Each year a number of new acts are inducted into the Hall of Fame in a lavish ceremony. Last year it was the turn of thrash legends Metallica, who performed with a former bass player at the induction ceremony.

Joining them were some of rock's most influential names. However the Hall Of Fame doesn't just celebrate straight forward rock acts with Run-DMC getting the nod last year.

In the 2009 shortlist acts such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, LL Cool J, and Kiss are set to do battle against returning candidates such as The Stooges and ABBA.

"It's a real honor to be nominated in our first year of eligibility" said Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith to Billboard.

"Obviously the Hall of Fame has excellent musical taste."

The final decision on inductees is expected to be made in January, while the Hall of Fame itself is set to celebrate a special anniversary. Turning 25 years old in 2009, the organisation is due to hail this milestone with a series of special shows.

The concerts are set to take place at October 29th and 30th at New York's Madison Square Garden with performances expected from the likes of U2, Metallica, Stevie Wonder and Simon & Garfunkel.

The RRHOF has always taken artists from genres other than rock. LL Cool J isn't the first non-rocker to be nominated, so don't act like he is.

Dream theatre aren't old enough to get in.
RHCP do deserve it, they have had such an influence on the modern rock industry. I agree rush should be in there, but they're not 'mainstream' which opens up the door for hundreds of other smaller bands to go for a place and clutter the hall up.

Run-D.M.C. and Beastie Boys deserve their place. Ahhhhh boo hoo they are rappers, so ****ing what!? They may be hip-hop, but they both had rock sensibilities and had an influence on some rock music, and their influence was profound on the fusing of the 2 genres, if not for them you wouldn't have your Rage Against the Machine. You try rapping their songs.

I don't know much about LL Cool J myself, I've heard his old stuff was good but he's not so good now, so I'll just not comment on him, because I wouldn't know what I'm talking about. But I'm sure you guys dissing him don't have a clue what you're on about anyway.

Also, I STRONGLY agree Rush should be offered a place. It's ****ing stupid that they haven't yet, they should have been inducted years ago.

Im listening to Frusciante right now, and I have to say my discovery of RHCP might have been one of the most influential moments in the last few years. From a technical perspective, ABBA should not even be on that list. Yeah Rock n'Roll died out in the 60's but it spread it's influence throughout the decades. After studying the genre myself, there is no link reaching out to ABBA.

The reason Run Dmc are there is because they combined hip-hop with rock (well Rock itself died out in the 70's).

I think it'd be cool to have the chillies there as they were the first band I ever got into.

When you're a band that has influenced the likes of Metallica, Maiden, Dream Theater, and just about any metal/rock bass player and drummer (and yes Lifeson influenced a pile of guitarists, but maybe not as much as the other two) you're not even considered an equal anymore. The Peppers deserve it, and the Stooges were arguably the biggest influence on all punk. I could see Kiss making it in just based on the impact they had on rock and roll, especially bringing that level of showmanship to it. I suppose if they count rap LL Cool J could get a spot. Other then that, we have some disco, some old Motown, some stuff I haven't heard of, and Genesis, none of which needs to be in the Hall Of Fame. I understand what you mean. Essentially, you're saying the music should be rock and roll as well as having merit. Given the institution's name I agree, though if you scroll through a list of past inductees, they're not all rock and roll as such. Madonna was inducted in 2008, for example.

What I said still stands though; many people on this website lambast music purely due to the fact it isn't rock or metal, and such attitudes are childish. Good music does exist beyond rock and metal. As I said, music should be judged on merit, and not on its genre. Pop and other genres have their fair share of shit and good music, and the same goes for rock and metal.

Disagree. Motley Crue isn't a technical band like Rush, but they pretty much spawned hair metal. Except unlike most of the other bands in that genre, they had a ton of hits, and have been at it longer, still touring and putting out music today. Yea nobody's going to be studying Nikki Sixx's basslines, and Vince's voice sucks without pro-tools, but they had a huge influence and were very popular, like them or not.

LL Cool J? Him getting in would be a huge fail. Yes to Rush, yes to Iron Maiden, and even though I hate them, yes to Kiss, the greatest marketing company ever that wrote some music on the side.

Agree with slaps76: It's more about influence than anything in the end. The only reason Kiss should ever get in is because of that.
