Ringo Starr says the Beatles were the first punks.
He makes the claim on the Martin Scorsese documentary George Harrison: Living In The Material World, where he also describes how the band reacted to hearing their first singles being played on the radio.
"We were incredibly grateful to be on the vinyl really. The idea of getting recorded … And then we'd be on the charts. We'd stop the car because you'd know when it was coming on. And then we'd listen to the record and drive on up to the gig."
In another clip,
Eric Clapton tells the story beind the Beatles song "
Here Comes The Sun" from the 1969 album
Abbey Road:
"George was a magical guy. We'd sat down at the bottom of the garden, looking out at the sun shining. It was a beautiful morning, and he started to sing the opening lines, 'Here Comes The Sun.' I watched it come to life."
Starr added his first impression to the classic track: "One day, George comes in and says 'Oh, I've got this song, it's in 7 and 1/2 time.' He might as well have talked to me in Arabic."
Starr said he didn't understand time signatures, so had to find his own way of remembering to play along to the famous introduction.
The documentary which traces George Harrison's life is released today on DVD. It was co-produced between Scorsese and Harrison's wife, Olivia.
