Sick! Kurt Cobain, Sid Vicious, Joey Ramone Advertise Doc Martens

It seems that dead celebrities can be used to sell more than pointless reissues and vacuum cleaners, notes PunkNews.org. Allegedly, a new print/poster campaign in the U.K. for famous punk rock footwear maker, Doc. Martens, has used four of the biggest names of the genre's deceased stars.

Kurt Cobain, Sid Vicious, Joey Ramone and Joe Strummer have been reported to all appear as angels wearing the famous boots. Writer Andrew Petch said the following of the add campaign:

"We wanted to communicate that Dr. Martens boots are 'made to last,’ and we discovered that these idolized musicians wore them. Showing them still wearing their Docs in heaven dramatized the boots’ durability perfectly. And, as images, they feel very iconic."

According to the article at the Daily Swarm, the images have been cleared for use in the U.K. only, in an arrangement with Corbis, supplier of the original photographs, which have been enhanced by photographer Dimitri Daniloff and retoucher Christophe Huet.

Check out the ads:

  • Kurt Cobain
  • Joe Strummer
  • Sid Vicious
  • Joey Ramone

That's pretty fu*kin' low...I don't even like Nirvana, but damn I feel bad for Kurt now...and all of 'em. That's total exploitation, and it's not iconic at all. It's bullsh*t. These companies don't care about the artists or their music, they care about advertising and making a buck. If they'd have said something to the effect of "Kurt sucks, the Ramones were horrible, buy Doc Martins," I'd be less pissed. Geezy Creezy.

I also heard that that 'Slush' company is planning to dig up their bodies, grind them in a blender, and market it as 'A taste of greatness'.
Kurt's purple and though they say tastes Grunge-tastic, is actually a bitter flavour of inept exploitation.

Its not going to bring into question the integrity of the individual, it will not make them anymore timeless than they already are... So everyone can get of their high horses now and stop acting holier than thou. Its a very simple ad campaign that doesn't really hurt anyone.

Don't sell them. If you sell them, someone else will wear them and support doc martin. Go to the corporate headquarters, stand on the steps and douse the boots in gasoline, and burn them. That'll make a hell of a statement. If peta can do it here (though I hate them so much), you can do it there. Good luck, bro.

Very good point. We shouldn't get caught up in the moment too much. I won't argue either side of that because I have no idea how the process the company went through to be able to do this.

BUT, I will say that the idea of showing Kurt in heaven deeply offends me, and I'm an atheist lol. It's like showing Jesus (not comparing the two.. just exagerating to make a point) wearing Docs.
What's next? "Wear Docs or go to hell, oh also great musicians wore Docs. Who didn't? HITLER, you're not Hitler are you? BUY DOCS!!".

Personally, I think it's a really good marketing campaign. It's controversial, but, at the same time, it doesn't make you think any less of the people they use, so it's not downgrading and disrespectful. The controversy will help sales just as much as the actual posters will.

I don't really see anything wrong with this at all. They must have the permission of the right people to use these people. All the people wore Docs at some point or another.

    Smart advertising. End of.

I'm so outraged at what you've just said. This sick advertisement pisses over everything real punks like those guys stand for. Joe Strummer would tear down every single poster of this sick PR stunt right down if he were alive. All Kurt Cobain ever wore were Converse. The black and white "classic" ones. Apparently...anyway, it's more about the fact that DEAD ICONS are being used to sell merchandise. Ever more disgusting is the fact that Cobain disliked the media, and Vicious ****ing HATED it! He would've gone crazy and burnt these damn posters, pissed on the ashes, and used it as paste to glue the mouth of the media shut!!!

This is actually NOT anything like Dimebag Darrell and Dean guitars. Dime designed the Razorback and Razorback V before he died and a lot of that campaign was supposed to happen anyway... it just didn't manage to make it out until after he died. So obviously, out of respect, they gotta pay some homage to his memory as well as advertise the guitars he created.

I think its hilarious that out of the four possible people they could pick, its four musicians whose fans i'd think would be most upset by this. Joey Ramone and Sid Vicious don't exactly scream 'corporate advertisement'

And for those saying that "well they wore them, and its just a shoe ad, they might have endorsed them if they were alive"... i drink Coke. That doesn't mean that i'd be fine with Coke dressing me up with as an angel with a can in my hand for an advertisement after i've died. Its a product, not a part of the person, and this reduces the person to something commercial. To do it to someone who's dead and has no voice to object is even worse.

,..First off, no. Kids who listen to pop garbage don't care about real musicians, and would probably lose interest upon learning who was being used to advertise the boots. Secondly, people wouldn't care about the ads if they didn't know who was in them anyway. Thirdly, congrats on surviving your own lobotomy--it is inconceivable that anybody with all of their brain in place would say something so asinine. Go back to your precious Fall Out Boy and leave the memories of real punks alone...and Sid, for that matter.

The bringing of a slow and painful death to all manufacturers who can condone such unconscionable advertising practices is the only justice that can come out of this grave debauchery. And the ad men, too, must go. Read Vance Packard's The Hidden Persuaders to learn about their other dirty tricks.

It's a common conspiracy theory that it was Courtney Love that killed Kurt Cobain, and that he didn't commit suicide. Google Kurt Cobain conspiracy and you'll find all sorts of theories.

anything that happens major is now seen as controversial and has a "conspiracy" theory to it, dont get me wrong, i firmly believe there's an area 51 but its obvious kurt killed himself, how many problems did the guy have in his head which reflected in his music and how many suicides have their been from people just listening to his music when they are in a bad emotional state?

I don't necessarily agree with this idea of using dead celebrities, but if people are stupid enough to fall for it and there's money to be made, I sure as hell would exploit it.

Don't blame Doc Martens for simply exploiting people's stupidity, blame the people like yourselves who create such attention to this campaign. You all realise you're giving Doc's what they want right?

Companies are not people, so stop bitching about them like they are, jesus cock sucking christ. Quite bitching like it's high school, or for most of you, keep that shit at lunch time while you coast on by thanks to the No Dipshit Left Behind Act, and start doing something productive, like dismantling bullshit & associated perceptions, boycotting, petitioning, protesting, etc... This companies actions will not be changed if people just sit back and laugh while it all goes to hell; in this case, i found most of it this shit funny, but there's something ****ed up taking Joey Ramone into the ad as he's only non-emo fag up there who *had* some dignity left. The stupid baby boomers that make up of most of these companies are the people to blame, not the companies-as-PR-entities,
and to sum most of those *******s up, George Carlin said it best:

"...the baby boomers: whiny, narcissistic, self-indulgent people who's simple philosophy: 'GIMME THAT! IT'S MINE!'...these people were given everything, everything was handed to them, and they took it all, sold it all; sex, drugs, and rock and roll and they stayed loaded for 20 yrs and had free ride, but now they're staring down the barrel of the burnout, and they don't like it, they don't like it so they've become self-righteous, and they wanna make things hard for young people, they tell em abstane from sex, say no to drugs, as for Rock and Roll they sold that for television commercials a long time ago, so they an buy 'pasta machines', and 'stair masters', and 'soy bean futures'.

you know something, they're cold, bloodless people. It's in their slogan 'no pain, no gain', 'just do it', 'play it hard', 'shit happends, deal with it', 'get a life!'. These people went from 'do your own thing!' to 'just say no!', they went from 'love is all you need' to 'whoever has the most toys, wins!', and they went from 'cocaine' to 'rogaine' and you know something, they're still counting grams, only now it's fat grams! and the worst of it is we have to watch the commercials on tv for levis loose fitting jeans and fat ass docker pants because these degenerate, yuppie, boomer cock suckers couldn't keep their hands off the croissants and the 'Haägen Dasz' and their big fat asses have spread all over and they have to wear fat ass docker pants. Fuck these yuppies, and **** everybody now that I think of it"

On the contrary, the great Cliff is dead...however I agree with you. We live in capitalist America--where its technically a fecund breeding ground for advertisers--so I can see why advertisers are exploiting the dead. However, I do not think that we should sit here passively and accept this nonsense. I am glad a lot of people on site actually responded with

If they'd have said something to the effect of "Kurt sucks, the Ramones were horrible, buy Doc Martins," I'd be less pissed. Geezy Creezy.

I see what you're saying, but have some respect for what they did. Nirvana basically started grunge...The Ramones basically started punk...and so on. You don't have to like it, but I still think that there is alot of due respect that is owed to these legends, whether or not you appreciated their music. Which is why Dr. Martens should be ashamed of themselves. Still, I suppose it is getting them exactly what they wanted...attention. I always hated those things though...I'd rather wear my skate shoes to be honest. Anyways, this is pretty much Elvis all over again. He was good, but I don't believe that he, or anybody for that matter, can be crowned "King" of rock and roll unless EVRYONE agreed on that...which is probably never going to happen unless someone brainwashes us all. Oh, and Elvis was mostly Gospel/Blues anyways, so I don't think he even counts in the first place. That said, it's the same story here. I liked the George Carlin quote...

Can't anybody see what's happening here? The best way to sell a product through an advertising campaign is to get everybody talking about the ads. It really seems to have worked in this case. I was and still am a Strummer/Clash fan. I also was and still am a Doc Martens wearer. Docs were an integral part of what was going on in '76/'77... and for many years before and since.
Whether you like it or not, this is a brilliant advertising campaign.
So, the more we keep talking about it, the more footwear Doc Marten are going to sell.
No commercial or advertising campaign is going to tarnish my memories of any of these great artists. Neither should it.
Let's get it in perspective. It's a ****ing footwear ad...

and btw, you guys aren't Vicious, Cobain, Ramone, and\or Strummer. Stop speaking for them.

Dimebag designed the guitar and loved his Deans and already agreed to do the ads before he died. These guys died much longer ago, and Kurt Cobain for one (I'm not too sure about the others) actively voiced his hatred of commercialism and this is literally the exact thing he wanted to avoid by killing himself, it's in his f**king suicide letter for chirst's sake! This is denying at least one dead rock legend his life's final wishes, and that is simply f**ked up by anyone's reasoning.

On a lighter note, suicide is a sin, so depicting Kurt in heaven is false advertising to boot. Hehehe...

I don't know if you were around for that but that is COMMERCIALISM... and don't even attempt to give me the typical "ohh well kurt never wanted to be famous blah blah blah." and if they were all still alive, we wouldn't be talking about this because they wouldn't be on those posters. And I am in no way rooting for Doc Marten's or for you anti-everything people. It was a clever marketing idea (everyone should give Doc's credit for that). So stop being such an ignorant F*CK. Just look around the room you're in and tell me all the mass manufactured stuff in your room... your fender (since you're punk), your pair of extra tight jeans and the gel in your mohawk. You're just as much of a corporate rump swab as everyone else.

I don`t see what the big deal is... what does "good taste" have to do with punk rock? Besides, if Sid, Kurt, Joe and Johnny were so "anti-commercialism" they wouldn`t pay $120.00 for a pair of boots. Especially not for a pair of Dr. Martens, they`ve become somewhat of a punk rock necessity. I could understand being upset if they guys were vegans or something, but offa the top of my head I don`t think any of them were.

Things like these just get blown up so fast by people who think they can speak in the name of these artists...

And if you consider Kurt Cobain to be a legend or hero, man I feel sorry for you. Even if he 'invented grunge' there was nothing special about him or his music. Kurt killing himself for not wanting to become a corporate product is nonsense, comitting suicide is a cowardly way to end your life because you can't bear it anymore.

In conclusion I don't support the ads, because you use people's status without their permission, but if any company wishes to do so, then so be it, life goes on..

Am I the only person who hasn't been swayed in either direction about the product? I don't really care about advertising that much. Also, I assume the people who design and make the boots are in a different department to advertising, so that just makes me care even less. If it came out that the shoes were made by children in forced labour dealies, then I'd be swayed, but this is a little bit of advertising.

The thing is, they should have realised that most of the fans of these bands are trying their hardest to be or actually are anti-corporate and stuff, so this will probably lose money for them, from that group. And then, there are people who primarily like rap and hip-hop, and although there is nothing wrong with that, the majority, that I've encountered, seem to see rock musicians and fans as inferior, so seeing the shoes associated with them, will probably lose business from that side of things as well.

if these holiest of musicians which you are all so quick to praise despite having no personal knowledge of them and how they really thought and felt about life (remember the anti-establishment attitudes of these people were marketed to you right along with their music)were so against money fame and success then why did they ever branch out to large audiencies in the first place? because they wanted ferrari's too kids...except maybe sid but he was retarded so we'll call him the x factor. all of your rock star heroes are and were real people too. quit telling yourselves they were gods walking the earth and realize they were human and had NO PROBLEMS making money with their talent...nor should they have, and whether you like it or not dr. martens have been a part of the scene (ESPECIALLY grunge, i was a teen when that shit went down and you were judged by the condition of your doc's and chuck's)so it makes sense to for the company to use an ad like this. i mean if dr. martin's had used jessica simpson in an ad then you would all be here ranting about how uncool that was. you just want to be upset for the sake of being upset and frankly i don't see why anyone on here feels such indignation on the behalf of these dead guys anyway. they were freaking rock stars and now there names and face ARE going to be used from time to time but you know what? it really does keep their legacy and music alive for future generations...provided people don't try to be a bunch of elitist a-holes and withold who these people and what they did from those who don't know just so you can pretend you are somehow more knowledged in some way than others...which would be pretty sad but i'm sure no one on this site would stoop that low. it's an ad, they are dead, and it does not concern you in anyway...

Listen, I don't think it would be such a big deal if the photos were of people that weren't so vocal about anti-commercialism. I except Kurt Cobain from that pool, however, because he did become quite taken with being a big star, where the others (Strummer, Vicious, and darling Joey Ramone) actually lived with integrity and stayed true to doing exactly what they wanted, creatively. Sadly, this is probably a big part of the reason Kurt offed himself. It's too bad these guys didn't get together before death, maybe he would have learned something about being true to yourself, and we wouldn't have had to say goodbye too soon.

Doc Marten advertises to sell product. They were way off-base with this, and the best way to protest is with your wallet. Don't buy the damn boots. You will make PETA happy if you do like these guys did and just wear your canvas Converse anyway. Better yet, go buy some used boots. I always thought punk rock was about the music and the attitude, not the expensive boots. Go figure.
