Slipknot Do Have A Future

Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison says the band will continue without bassist Paul Gray, and won’t replace him with a new full-time member.

Instead band members will play bass on new studio recordings, and they’ll look at options for a touring musician when the time comes.

But frontman Corey Taylor, who plays Sonisphere this weekend, is less clear on the band’s future.

Gray was found dead in a hotel room in May after overdosing on prescription drugs.

Jordison says: "There will be no other bass players besides Jim Root, Mick Thomson and me. Everyone plays guitar in the band so I think we’ll all play bass on the record.

"We’re not going to have anyone come in. Live - we’ll deal with that when it comes along."

But Taylor is less convinced about what happens next. He says: "We’re all talking. Everyone’s talking, and everything’s good - but we’ll see."

they may be able to pull off just about the same sound, but the live experience is where the 2 percussionists really come into play. they add a really cool element of stage presence since they're free a lot of the time to run around and jump off shit, interact with the crowd, etc.

chris fehn plays bass in a side project, last time i checked, i think he'd be ideal to play bass live. in the studio, i agree with what joey said in the article, if they all contribute to guitar, they may as well with bass.

As a long time fan, first off I hope they are all able to recover as people, before they recover as a band.

Yes they have an excess of members, but it seems kind of silly to treat it as if 4 members of the band are reserves for when one is unable to perform.

I'd rather see a new full-time bass player. Instead of using guns for hire, give someone new their time to shine, their own Jason Newsted if you will.

The bass is very diffrent from the guitar I know that it sounds like it will work out but the bass plays with the drums and gives it more of a feel to the songs give more soul or power to the music I don't think a guitarist can do that from just picking up the bass unless they take lessons or loads of practice

Hmm. paul gray was a great bass player no doubt about it. but i'm pretty sure the other members were all just too self obsessed to let him get more of the spotlight. Imagine if slipkno had a heavy metal version of Flea or someone who didnt just get downtrodden and told to constantly plod along behind the guitars for every song, and had the oppurtunity to become a superstar at the instrument on pure skill. He was pushed to the back of the band to much im thinking. And yes, one of them percussionist lads should get the bass cranking and stop hitting the kegs and stuff.

Do you even listen to Metallica? And Justice For All was a good album but with a ton of useless notes, parts, unnecessarily long songs and etc. That is why they went in the direction they did with the Black album. If think if you actually listened to a few songs off of it, you'd like it as opposed to just automatically hating something that's successful. Simple=/= bad. Saying Metallica sucked without Burton is the most cliche thing to say...he didn't effect their music THAT much ( James and Lars wrote most of the songs still ), he just meant a lot to the band as a person. You are defending Slipknot's decisions even though you have no clue what they're actually thinking, assuming that they are the messiah and not doing anything selfish. You are conforming. You think that bands with theoretical talent, complexity, and speed (which are MAJOR parts of the genre known as "metal") are conformists, and you don't listen to that because you'd be a sheep. You are conforming to anti-conformity, which is ironic considering you already conform to Slipknot, the ultimate form of conformity, and thus, the ultimate form of hypocrisy.

As a final note: if you maybe studied theory, you would understand that a band like Dream Theater makes music that far outweighs Slipknot. Of course, I don't like Dream Theater either, but I'll take intelligent thinking over mindless complaining any day. Maybe you should listen to some of those technical speed bands, because a lot of them are doing what Slipknot did a lot better. Oh, and Slipknot was part of the "Nu-Metal" fad of the 90's, so you are technically listening to a band that's 100% conformist. They didn't start the fad, they just lasted longer than most of the other horrible bands. Next you'll say that Lady Gaga is original (she's not, just in case you REALLY think she is).

2) Fenatyl is a prescribed synthetic, for relieving severe pain; i.e. coming out of a heroin addiction like Paul was. Morphine is also commonly used for treating detox patients. For a depressed guy who was clearly in a lot of mental turmoil from, yes, bad personal choices, and being that he was taking ridiculously strong painkillers...it's really not that hard a mistake to make. Given a choice between agonising stomach cramps and maybe a bit of relief from time to time...I would take the pharmaceutical path any day, fully knowing the risks.

For starters: morphine is highly addictive. Why do you think they use many other alternatives to prescribing morphine now? Besides, he had already been though detox and rehab some time ago before this happened...

Oh, and in my many years of studying music the "conformist" way I've never once had my information "force-fed" to me. My teachers have merely taught me what it means to be a musician (ie: playing musically) rather than just another guitar player or brass player or whatever.

For example: Kurt Cobain was just another guitar player. Pit him up against somebody with a degree in music performance (or theory) and he'd play circles around him; not just technically but MUSICALLY. He'd have better dynamics, rhythm, accents, phrasing etc. They wouldn't have taught music this way since the middle ages if it didn't hold some kind of precedent...

And I assure you that getting a degree in music performance is MUCH MUCH harder than you are trying to downplay it to my friend.

Lastly, I don't think you have listened to much of Dream Theater. They don't "'conform' to the speed war" in any sense of the word. Sure, they have some fast songs which are pretty popular, but if you listen to an album worth of material much of it is pretty slow fare. They really only go for broke when it fits the style of the music. And all this crap about "bands doing what they want to do because it's not manufactured or strained etc."; what, you think tech/prog bands all sound the same or something??? Listen to some Opeth, then some Cynic, then some DT and tell me they are just generic prog bands. And if you don't think DT is unique music listen to Octavarium and try to grasp the concepts behind that song. You probably won't give it a shot but I hope you will.

I'm glad there will (supposedly) be a new album, although replacing paul is still up in the air. I can see reasons on both sides to or not to. I think Chris Fehn should move his skinny tincan beating ass and play an instrument instead of playing ghetto drums. Let clown mess around over there.

As someone who has experienced problems with drugs, I can't even begin to say how disrespectful some of the comments here have been. Now let me just say, I have never been a Slipknot fan. Honestly, I can't stand them. But how are you going to say that Paul doesn't deserve sympathy? What he did to himself was obviously stupid, but you have to realize that when dealing with a drug addiction, a lot of things don't make much sense. Maybe he intended to kill himself, maybe he didn't, but it's clear that he was so addicted that he couldn't control his actions. Say what you will, but no one deserves to go through that.

Long songs are much, much more innovative, interesting, and generally better; if a song is short and has a repetitive structure, you're not hearing much original content.

If their bassist died and they decided not to replace him, I would guarantee you that all of their fans would be respecting their opinion and raving on about how great examples they are of humanity.

Better yet why don't you take a listen to The Dance of Eternity and compare the bass solo to anything that Paul has done musically (not hating on Paul btw) and you'll see if the so called self taught musician wins the battle. DT is and always will be unique compared to most bands these days. Any band who has lasted for over 20 years and hasn't really been noticed because they do what they want is already better than a commercially known band that'll probably last for only 10 years, again I show no hate towards Slipknot or Paul.

Yeah i'm 17 rite and i go to school with this guy who is a virtuoso on giutar, as opposed to me who looks like a first year student when I sit next to him an play something. So naturally, I invited him to be the guitarist in my band. I even moved to bass to accomodate him, Out of respect(I do enjoy bass though...Flea FTW). First jam sesh i just told him to learn a bunch of songs just to get experienced with the band,(a bunch of chilli peppers songs lol) then wed teach him the originals. he rocks up and unfortunately, he completely fails with the whole band thing. Sure he plays the music fine, better than me if i dont say so my self, but you can tell on his face he doesnt enjoy it. and there is no love of the music. To play music and enjoy it you need to love it, and he does love it, but just showing off by himself playing flight of the bumblebee really effin fast.
