Smashing Pumpkins: Reunion Will Be!

Smashing Pumpkins: Reunion Will Be!

Melissa Auf Der Maur, ex-Smashing Pumpkins bassist since 1999, has told MTV that rumours of the band's reunion are absolutely true.

Auf said frontman Billy Corgan has been working on material that will, at some point, surface in the form of a new Smashing Pumpkins album.

"From what I understand, Billy [will be] making a Pumpkins record over the next little while," Auf Der Maur told MTV News last week. "Everyone knows Billy doesn't need too many people to make a Pumpkins record, other than Jimmy [Chamberlin, longtime Pumpkins drummer] ? who he has [on board]."

A spokesperson for Azoff Management confirmed Thursday (February 2) that Corgan and Chamberlin have signed on with the firm as Smashing Pumpkins, and that the two are writing new music. A source close to the situation told MTV News that the duo plan to record over the summer and that the new Pumpkins could surface before the end of the year ? however, no definitive plans are set.

Auf Der Maur said she's not sure whether Corgan has reached out to guitarist James Iha or bassist D'Arcy Wretzky to complete the band's original lineup, but she said she's told Corgan that she'd be happy to pitch in if he needs her.

"My services are there for him whenever he needs them," she said. "Assuming I'm not on tour ? but even then, we can cross paths. I love the Pumpkins, and to play those songs again would be nothing but fun for me. It was a big part of my life."

Auf Der Maur said it wouldn't be a true Pumpkins reunion without D'Arcy's bass. "The coolest thing would be if D'Arcy was around, but I don't know where she's at and I don't think [Corgan or Chamberlin] do either," she said. "But I feel very comfortable being second best."

Speculation that Corgan's seminal rock troupe would be taking Coachella's stage in late April was at least partially quashed on Wednesday, when the event's organizers released the two-day concert's Pumpkin-less official bill. That same afternoon, rumors began circulating that the Pumpkins would be headlining Lollapalooza this summer. However, according to the source, if Lolla does come back, "You can take it to the bank [that the Pumpkins] won't be on it."

Whether or not she's involved, Auf Der Maur says she just wants the band's reunion to be done right. "I hope they don't rush it, 'cause the record should be the absolute best it can be. [And they should] then strategize, because as we know, grunge is about to come back: The '80s trend is almost done and we're about to hit 1990 again. It's scary to think, but very true."

This is the best news in for the music industry I've heard in quite a while. I can't wait for this to happen, and the new album, wether it's true to it's roots or not, will be a masterpiece in it's own. I'm sure it will be wonderful, knowning Billy. This is absolutely amazing.

Maybe she meant they need to strategize because they're going to hav to work harder because grunge is coming back, and they aren't grunge. If grunge is popular, it'll take more strategy for a non-grunge band to do good. But ya know, it's the smashing pumpkins. Tell the world a cd is out and you won't need much strategy besides that. Who doesn't love these guys?

well theyre sort of a more radio friendly grunge band. They still have the whole 'quiet, loud, quiet, loud' thing going on which is what grunge is based on. Just listen to 'cherub rock' or 'today'.

Dude give me a break. Exhibit A: Their appearance on the "Singles" Soundtrack alongside Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Screaming Trees. In fact because of that album many would mistake SP for a Seattle band
Exhibit B: Billy talks about what equipment he used on Siamese Dream in the official tab book. Among his gear was the Big Muff, which he also talks about on his website. This classic pedal was also used by Kurt Cobain and epitomizes true grunge tone...
Which takes us to Exhibit C: Butch Vig produced the Pumpkins' first two albums, along with Nirvana's Nevermind, which I am sure you have heard of.

Yes in fact SP was influenced by grunge. Maybe they were not a grunge band per se, as Billy once said (this is not a totally accurate quote) "We could do what ever we wanted. The band could change with the times" So in this sense they were a Grunge band because of when they were in existence.

OH MY F***ING GOD!!!!! This made my day, my week, whatever! This will be great, i wouldnt mind seeing melissa on bass. James should be there as he is a kickass guitarist, but the big guy is there along with his best band companion. Man i started to like the pumpkins around 2002 when my brother showed me(i was twelve). Since then it has been on my top three favourite bands, with billy corgan being my idol as a composer. But i could never go to a concert. Now perhaps i can! This is so awesome. Billy Corgan and the pumpkins are absolute awesome.

dustafust wrote on 02/03/2006 - 03:55 pm / quote |
I saw a quote from Billy Corgan once,, it said something like "before nirvana, we were considered a retro band, but after nirvana, we were considered a "riding on the coat-tails" band,, so we effectively went from ripping off the past to ripping off the future"

always liked that

and just because someone uses a cirtian pedal, doesn't make them a cirtian brand of rock, SYH_Fan

I think it's very important that James be a part of any reunion. Billy has often said that the essence of the sound was the guitar interplay between him and James.

It's not there on SD, but it is on Gish and PI. Mellon Collie features of lot of James' guitar playing and on Adore and Machina he was given a pretty free reign to play, with results i really like.

I don't know whether d'arcy is essential, in fact i'm an auf der maur fan (her solo work is great and she's a very energetic performer), but James has to be involved for it to really be the pumpkins to my mind.

That said, Billy and Jimmy can pull off a "pumpkins" record on their own and it will sound great. But it just won't be the same in manby ways

THis will be sweetness IF:
1) Iha and Chamerlin join crazy chic and Corgan. The best drummer of the 90s by far in Chamberin and Iha is a lot better and essential to the Pumpkins than people think
2)It sounds like Gish, Siamese Dreams, and MCATIS. Those alums were soo good, the stuff they did afterwards, IMO sucked. It was void of the great octavey grungy guitar and got too almost new wave sounding.
3) Corgan doesnt cock it up and have some blowup and call it off. That could def happen.
Anyways one of my favorite bands from the 90s, when music was grand. Cant wait to see what happens

I completely disagree, I'd say I know a fair bit about the Pumpkins and their music and I believe James Iha was possibly the largest influence on their sound. James's guitar created their unique music and his experimental work also contributed towards their individual and dynamic sounds. Think about tracks where Iha uses the e-bow and such, just all the little things he consistantly used to create atmosphere in the music made it special.

Also further more to his credit, anyone who knows anything about the Pumpkins would know that he wrote some of, what I consider to be, their best songs, such as Soma and Mayonaise.

So as far as I'm concerned buddy, you're a ****ing moron to discredit James.

james was great, but to say that he is the largest influence on their sound is just overreacting to the other guy's statement. yes he cowrote a couple of their best great songs, but almost everything else was just billy. the biggest sound in the band was his unique voice and guitar tone (which is also due to james), but after that almost everything is him. Live it's cool to have them trade off solos, but he wrote those too for recording purposes, and was phenomenal at it. I of course want to see Iha join in this reunion, but it's absurd to say that he shaped the sound more than billy.

anyhow, one of my favorite bands, this is great!! If i see them, that's as close as i'll come to seeing my top five bands. I can't see the beatles, but saw mccartney. Saw Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan, RHCP, and now hopefully SP (i did see zwan, so this is an upgrade in that category).

The point I was trying to make was that even though they were hugely influencial and a big part of the Grudge/Alt-rock movement their sound was so much more expansive than that. You can definetly see the grudge elements in Siamese Dream & MCIS but the first album was very much a 7o's based Psychodelic album, because it wasnt until the SD album that they started using the fuzz effects pedals that would come to define their sound. Later they made Adore and Machina that nobody apart from me seems to like which again sound nothing like SD,MCIS or Gish. It is impossible to put them in any catagory.

Yeah i think Adore and Machina I & II were so underated, songs as wonderfull as 'For Martha' and 'With every light' compeletly passed the majority of people by! Its true Billy was in a goth-pop cure inspired band called The Marked before the pumpkins! Does anyone know if or where you can find any recordings from that band?

a new album wouldnt be bad either.

but to the guy who said they were grunge just because they had MUFF pedals, i think you have failed to realize that santana and hendrix used muffs too. santana and hendrix weren't exactly grunge in my opinion.

Okay so the Pumpkins are hands down my favorite band of all time so this really would be fantastic if it happened... ironically enough Iha's also my favorite member. I heard that Iha's working with that Stipes guy from REM on a Covers album or something, can anyone confirm that?

So if he's busy with other stuff, he probably won't come back, and if he doesn't come back, then trust me, live, they would sound sooooo different. Iha's the mastermind behind that wonderful wailing tone you hear in most of their songs, and he does some crazy shit live, like disgustingly well placed harmonics and beautiful pickslides and probably the best lead work to come out of the 90s.

I can't wait. It's going to happen, it has to.

very true, however it'd be cool to see a revival of the same sort of movement. Take some ground back from rap and emo.

I so glad everyone here likes them! I dont think they will get D'arcy is you remember last year he said in on of his blogs that she was a "Bad natured drug addict". I dont really mind is they get melissa auf der maur instead of D'arcy. Melissa is great bass player and has a great attitude and is true Corgan fan! Thats what Billy needs to make a great album! Although I would love to know where she is 'cause D'arcy was amazing in her day.

Gman400 wrote on 02/05/2006 - 11:28 am / quote |
D'arcy is haawwwt. The pumpkins used to be my favorite band...when I was like 11. I still have some respect for them but IMO compared to metal they just don't match up. Still glad they're getting back together, Zwan and Corgan's solo stuff is disghusting at best.

But ya I hope it's not happy poetry like Billy's been doing recently, but I also hope it's not to much adore/machina esque either.

Okay Im a retard for thinking Jimi was grunge??? NO you retards he's from Seattle. Jimi was born in Seattle. The movie Singles was set and filmed in Seattle. The only people who were on that album were people either directly related to the movie, people from Seattle, and grunge bands. Im not an idiot I know that Adore, for example was not grunge. But to say that Auf Der Maur is wrong for saying the Pumpkins can and have done grunge, I think, idiotic. You cannot dismiss their influences. It transcends "disagreeing with labeling" and into "failure to coherently recognize sound/and or significance". Or maybe you guys are right and I did think Jimi is grunge and the big muff is JUST a sustain pedal (the Santana remarks) and cant be used as fuzz distortion, and a former Pumpkins bassist doesnt know what she is talking about when she says the Pumpkins were at one point grunge. Yeah.

Seriously, **** off. Quit trying to label this shit and put it in a box. I don't limit my diet to one food group and I don't limit my tastes in music to one genre. Billy Corgan doesn't experience just one type of emotion, and Billy Corgan doesn't write one type of song. He wrote songs (and well, of course he still does) in a way that was natural to him and his songwriting was quite diverse. I wouldn't say that songs like 'Luna' and songs like 'Geek USA' could be placed in the same genre, yet they still appear on the same album, and I'm not going to judge a band, or an album, or a song based on some label that somebody tried to apply to it so they could sum it up. If it's honest, pure music, it will be an expression unique to whatever artist who created it and that's that. Besides, if all a style of music comes down to for most you people is a location the artist was from, or what type of pedal they used, then you're really missing the point.
