SOAD Guitarist Form New Band

System Of A Down guitarist Daron Malakian has told Gary Graff of Billboard.com that he is in the process of forming and writing songs for Scars On Broadway, which will start operating in earnest once Ozzfest wraps in mid-August. The band is shooting to have its debut album out in the summer of 2007.

"I'm still kind of getting the whole band together at this point," Malakian told Billboard.com. "After I get back home from Ozzfest that's pretty much what I'll be focusing on.

"I think a System fan will be able to relate to the music, but there's a few different directions I want to take, whether it be a little bit more ethnic or sometimes electronic," he added. "There's just a few artistic directions I want to take with Scars that I haven't taken with System yet."

I'm happy for Daron, maybe he'll find another way to express his music, but they've had plenty of commercial success and wahtever else they want or don't want, why take a break now? Why WOULD they want Serj singing? I like SoaD but Serj gets annoying very fast. I think Daron rocks singing and playing guitar. I hope he takes a more metal direction in the new band but i doubt it. System is nice but the lyrics are retarded and the vocal style is very painful to listen to.

couldn't agree more, serj's voice has way better quality to it, and all i see daron do on his guitar are drop tuned barre chords and the occasional arpeggio. If anything daron's singing got annoying fast, too high pitched and whiny sounding for my tastes, and yeah toxicity > newer albums

Actually, the lyrics that Daron wrote are a great deal more retarded than Serj's. If you don't believe me, look at the songs Serj wrote for the earlier albums, and compare them to newer songs that Daron has written.

As for his voice, I find the sound of nails on a blackboard to less whiney.

i think it is going to be pretty lame. im pretty sure that serj and john made the band, which is not to say daron doesnt have talent. I just think that seeing as how i can play almost every SOAD song relatively well and ive been playing guitar for 3/4 of a year, it cant be that special. SOAD should live on.
Darons guitar is very creative and unique, but songs like lonely day just sound bad.
Oh, and Shavo is the coolest. And as for everyone who thinks Mesmerize sucks, u r wrong. it is one of their greatest albums. Hypnotize killed mezmerise.

Daron has talent, that's for sure, he's excellent though, nowhere in the league though of guitar legends like Dimebag, Page or even Slash.

And yes, he did kill SOAD when he started replacing Serj as the lead vocalist. Tell me, who IS the lead vocalist here? I mean, starting Steal This Album, their downfall was imminent. Sure they had a few stand-out songs but they all had Serj covering the lead.

Well that sucks Daron is leaving SOAD. But it maybe a good thing for SOAD though. Daron isn't really that good. He's just alright. I admit that he makes interesting riffs. I don't see why people have got such a problem with SoaD's vocals and lyrics. Its what makes them unique and sets them apart from most other bands. Yeah some songs would have fitted Serj's voice better but when they're both working together it sounds awesome. And I like their lyrics, yeah some of them don't make sense, but when they do they're either funny (Johnny) or making a serious point (Soldier Side). But I think that a break might make a difference, when they do come back together, because some of their new songs just sound tired out(Dreaming)

I think either Serj will go on his own exploits or System will find a new guitarist, I don't think the original line-up has a whole lot of new material left in 'em. As for SOAD's singing situation, Serj is brilliant on lead and Daron is brilliant on backup, but Daron singing lead (mostly the last two albums) has been a let down. Whatever happens, I wish Serj, Daron, Shavo, and John the best.

No one should have to worry about the electronic thing, I was a huge System fan (especially before Hypnotize) but when it comes down to it, Daron isnt that special or innovative. His idea of electronic will probably just be a keyboard intro on one song, before tearing into another run of the mill power chord/open chord fiasco. It'll probably just be another 12 Lonely Days, but coz he's gotten so full of himself now they'll all just be called "Daron Is Better Then Serj Parts 1,2,3 etc" Rest in peace System, Serj, Shavo, John: it was good while it lasted

Daron is a fine musician and creative, but the guy is not an especially talented guitarist, and he is a VERY weak vocalist, he cant hit one note live, theres even two off pitch sections on Hypnotize, honestly, how can you put out an album with vocal mistakes on it. i like system of a down and im sure i'll check out Scars on Broadway, but Daron is incredibly overrated and has a HUGE ego. I can't stand Daron's vocals at all. Especially when you have somebody like Serj with the coolest vocals around. Serj has a very distinct voice, while Daron is just whiny and annoying, in my opinion.

Good; I hope Daron leaves and doesn't come back. He's a control freak and the last albums were shitty. Sorry. I love SOAD, and the first two albums were amazing. After that, it wasn't System of a Down anymore; it was System of a Daron, and it blew. Maybe the next SOAD album we see will be with a new guitarist and we'll actually be able to HEAR Serj sing again.

hey hey, daron has a pretty good voice, its high, but great. even in toxicity his backing vocals on "chop suey" were absolutely amazing. listen 2 the chorus', especially the last 1, cuz it kicks ass.

i hav faith in SOB but its not gunna be like SOAD! i like all of SOAD's material. the last 2 werent as staong as the others but i still love listening to them. i hope SOAD doesnt break up (yes im goin to ozzfest cant fukin wait) if they do....at least they end when they were still great...all great things eventually coem to an end....theres still alot of bands out there that jus dont kno when to quit ((metallica, rolling stones, etc.))

Daron isnt a good guitarist at all. Compare him to people like John Petrucci of Dream Theater, Alexi Laiho of Children of Bodom, Kirk Hammett of Metallica, there are so many other bands (guitarists, bassists, drummers, vocalists) out there that are better than SOAD.

Also, I noticed that people only started listening to them because they heard BYOB on the radio, and everyone went crazy because they were talking about politics. All the people I know that listen to System only have their Mesmerize album, so I think it proves my point in a way. Their overrated, and need to stop making pathetic albums.

It's funny, most people aren't aware that Daron was singing before their 98 release. (Uranium Interview 05)

Daron's vocals add range to System of a Down. Their first album wasn't even "all that" and that was the first album I listened to.

It's amazing, people are saying that Daron is getting cocky, but I've yet to see anything coming from the band...if fact, interviews have said they WANTED him to sing more. So people really need to stop with their little stories they make up in their head about the band.

If they don't have a problem, then I don't have a problem. And every album kicks much ass.

Daron won't leave SOAD it means to much for him. SoB is just a side prodject and maybe if the system breaks up is a backup plan to stay in music. I'm not saying SOAD's going to break up.

I would need to disagree; Daron is most certainly a good guitarist, and is one of the best guitarets in recent memory. While I agree that those people which you mentioned are better than Daron with guitar, Daron is still an excellent guitarist and every single one of SOAD's members has excellent technical and creative skill(except perhaps the bassist.) SOADs music is pretty technical and complex in basically ever field.

And no, this is not coming from someone who started with BYOB. I own every album as well as many of their b-sides.

As for Daron being too cocky and contributing too much to SOAD lately.. I would agree somewhat. While I think Mezmerize is fine and Daron doesnt OD on that one, I agree with the people who say that Daron is great to backup Serj but is bad as a lead vocalist: I do not remotely like Lonely Day; it's just not what SOAD is supposed to be. Daron is a decent singer but let Serj do the lead vocals. Serj Tankian's distinct voice is one of the key components of why SOAD is one of my favorite bands.

I think that Daron is a pretty good guitarist on his older stuff (SOAD and Toxicity), but he is a horrible singer, i really hope he doesn't sing for the new band. Also, I really hope that System comes back together, cuz if they don't, that would just suck.

Umm.. to all the people whp say it's gonna suck because Daron is writing it, screw all yall. Daron wrote ALL of the songs that they ever did. Serj does have a better voice than Daron, but Daron, while not an amazing guitarist, is definitely a true musician, not a virtuoso, but is very capable of making good music. I hope they get back together soon, they will do something again, but probably not until 2008-2009. Very sad. Oh well, I look forward to this.
