Steven Tyler Quits Aerosmith?

For those that don't know, the members of Aerosmith have been going through troubled times. Last weekend, frontman Steven Tyler stated he might pursue a solo career while the rest of the band worked without him.

"I don't know what I'm doing yet," he told Classic Rock magazine. "But it's definitely going to be something Steven Tyler: working on the brand of myself - Brand Tyler."

Although there haven't been any signs of a dispute on-stage, there have been some incidents away from the spotlight. During the band's past three shows, Tyler didn't join his fellow colleagues until the opening song of their set. Now the band has decided to talk with each other soon to discuss playing without their frontman. Since Tyler is thinking of starting a solo career, it only seems right for the rest of Aerosmith to disband or find a new vocalist.

"I'm not sure how good that would look, it would largely depend on who we could get and who would want to do it," said guitarist Brad Whitford. "That's big shoes to fill. Nobody could replace Steven or imitate him -- he's one of a kind. But if somebody was willing to do it and the chemistry was right, why not?"

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry said he arrived home in Boston on Wednesday and read on the Internet that Tyler planned to leave the band, reports Lasvegassun.com.

"He has had no contact with me or the other band members," Perry said.

He says he hopes to keep Aerosmith together, with or without Tyler, but he was so stunned by recent developments he doesn't know what's going to happen.

"Right now I'm adjusting to how we're going to go on," Perry said. "Aerosmith is such a powerful band, I mean it's like a steam locomotive. You just can't disregard 40 years of four guys who play together as well as they do. We're just trying to — at least I am — trying to figure out what direction the band should take.

"As far as replacing Steve, it's not just about that, it's also four guys that play extremely well together, and I'm not going to see that go to waste. I really don't know what path it's going to take at this point, but we'll probably find somebody else that will sing in those spots where we need a singer and then we'll be able to move the Aerosmith up a notch, move the vibe up a notch."

I'm not really an Aerosmith fan, but they should consider doing something different than still calling themselves Aerosmith and working with a different singer.

As for the rest of the guys in Aerosmith...well...all good things must come to an end? Maybe some black guy'll pop up out of nowhere and sing for them, thats what usually happens.

Honestly this article makes Steven Tyler look like a first class douche bag. He tells the press he's leaving before he even talks to his bandmates. If I were Joe Perry I'd think about whether I even wanted him in the band or not.

And as far as the four people playing together, I think he means the guys in the band who actually play something vs. singing.

EREV777 wrote on 11/09/2009 - 12:08 pm / quote |

cant really replace tyler as the music is good not only down to his talent but his dtyle. almost any member of any band can be replaced a apart from a world class and individual singer. if other member leave bands can go on playing the known songs with a member emulating the sound of an instrument but cant do that with a voise without it sounding copy cat.

if tyler wasnt going completely solo it would be good to see him in velvet revolver, they could make some great music!

oh and the guy means 4 of them that make great music as tyler has left!

Joe's referring to himself, Whitford, Hamilton, and Kramer - implying that the four of them play very well together and should continue on without Tyler.

This is sad news though. I don't think that Aerosmith will ever be Aerosmith without Steven Tyler. They are all amazing musicians, but they each make up a small portion of the awesomeness that is Aerosmith. Take one member away and the band isn't the same.

Sad to say, but this does sound like the end of Aerosmith. If both of the toxic twins aren't in the band I don't think it's really Aerosmith. Joe Perry and Steven Tyler are the very sound of that band imo.

This is either another publicity stunt or an acute case of douchebaggism/crazyness on Tyler's part. I mean, who on earth would buy a Tyler solo album? A decrepit, stage-falling Tyler at that? He must have hit his head really hard that night.

Still, I would love to see Plant joining Aerosmith, just to **** with Jimmy.

Page: But you refused to do Zeppelin!
Plant: I never said I would't do Aerosmith.

This is the worst news I have heard all year. I hope Steven Tyler's solo stuff is good at least. I kinda have no hope for Aerosmith without him, I know that the others majorly contributed, but to me it's always been Stevens voice and just general Steveness that made the band what it is.

By coped I assume you mean sucked. For me, Once Izzy and Slash were gone it became kind of dumb. Then when the pictures of Axel Rose dressing up like a rapper on stage started surfacing on the internet it became dumber than mental retardation.

Miles Kennedy for the save. Plug him into Tyler's spot, continue on.

IMO, and this is definitely opinion, Tyler was always the weakest link of the band. There are better people who could replace him.

Chris Cornell could probably do it too.

double-0-eck wrote on 11/09/2009 - 05:20 pm / quote |
No. Fucking. Way. Tyler can not be replaced, and that's not an immature schoolboy response to this. Tyler and Perry ARE Aerosmith, they're the Toxic Twins. If Whitford thinks there's going to be that kind of "chemistry" with anybody else, he's evn iller than he looks. No Steven Tyler, no more Aerosmith. I hate to say this because Aerosmith are outright my favourite band of all time, but I think it's time for them all to hang up their boots. Hepatitis, stage falls and cameras knocking the shit out of you are just tiny factors in what will eventually be the ultimate humiliation. Besides which, I've been waiting for Whitford to Tommy Cooper it for ages so best to just preserve some dignity at least for his sake.

here is wat i think...The band should change the name if they change singers. i guess that would exist in a perfect world, but they probably have too many legalities to think about. if the rest of the band has to carry on without him then thats gonna have to happen. it is a shame but if anything we should jus let them carry on with wat they are doing. im sure if anything steven will have a sound too identical to aerosmith and realize he cant live without them or vice versa.
its jus gotta be left to time and we'll see what happens. either way good luck to both of them
who knows? there might be a reunion eventually

It is upsetting to hear this, but these folks are 60 and older. They probably should have stopped with the Aerosmith brand a few years ago. Also, they released the "Rock in a hard place" Album in 1982 without Joe Perry. Brad Whitford only played ryhthm guitar on 1 track "Lightning Strikes" They were replaced by Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay. (Not sure whatever happened to those guys) Actually, not a bad album. I personally thought it was much better than "Permanent Vacation" that album was so damn commercial. In contrast, the Beatles were finished by the time they hit 30 years old and they are and were the biggest band ever. They definitely shouldn't call the band Aerosmith, that is ridiculous if they do. Maybe Steven is just pissed because Joe is releasing or has released another solo album. Lets face it folks, all of our musical heros will not last forever entertaining us, just like we won't last forever. We have the music and the memories.

Dude, these are the guys that influenced many a young rocker. This is really it. The best-selling hard rock artist is down for the count. This is textbook rock drama; however, I remain optimistic for the future of the 'Smith. If Tyler were to ever rejoin, then there just might be hope.
A few of you guys also mentioned that there are five of them before; well, there were, but now that Tyler is out, that only leaves the other four to speak of :P

(i apologize for the cliche statement but..) its so true that some rock stars burn out in the spotlight like john lennon, jimi hendrix, jim morrison, and keith moon... then some really take too long to fade away like this. Dont get me wrong I've seen the recent Aerosmith shows and they're great plus Joe can still play his ass off but some off this band bickering is just immature attention grabbing ie. Tyler posting his intent to leave the band online which justs starts a ****storm like this

I highly doubt Steven would sing in Nirvana for many reasons but the most prominent ones being that Their singer/songwriter/guitar player is dead, their bassist is a writer and politician in Seattle and Dave the drummer is very busy being the vocalist and main songwriter for the foo fighters

No, Steven Tyler's many health problems (drug related and not) are what started a shitstorm like this.

I love Aerosmith and think that Perry, Whitford, Hamilton, and Kramer shouldn't continue to call whatever musical direction they go in "Aerosmith" without Tyler, but he's just had so many problems over the past few years that it really doesn't surprise me that him and the band are parting ways.

Steven goes back to Aerosmith so Axl is like "Hey, f**k this... my career is goin nowhere these days. Time to go play with Slash and the boys". Viola. GnR reunion. Just like that.

Pffft. All Arnel is good at is pretending he's Steve Perry.

It's not Aerosmith without all of them there. Joe, Joey, Brad, Tom, and Tyler. I think the instrumentalists forming a new band could be awesome - but it's not gonna be Aerosmith without Steven.

Wow. Pathetic.
Of course so many people think like this but of all places to find them.. a GUITAR forum?
A true musician will know how different and unique other musicians can make their instrument sound as compared to others.
(Of course there is an exception in terms of generic new age rock music since everything is crap and anyone can play that.. but we aren't talking about that garbage.)

Since this is a guitar site, I'll talk specifically about electric guitar.
Do you seriously think Van Halen would have made it without Van Halen?
Santana without Santana?
Do you think Led Zeppelin would have been the same without Jimmy Page?
Angus in AC/DC? Hey. This band actually changed singers and still were the same band.
Metallica without Kirk Hammet?
Hey, even Scorpions without Matthias Jabs would have sucked ass.
Or how about no Frank Hannon in Tesla?
Dream Theater without Petrucci? Ew.
Even Rage Against The Machine wouldn't have been the same without Tom Morello.
What about Guns 'N Roses? Slash was a huge part of that band and obviously without him (and the rest of the members as well imo) the band sucks.
Seriously, do you think Chinese Democracy has all the instruments replaced perfectly?
Not one new member sounds anything like the old.

Don't know man...

RTL, MOP, AJFA, TBA without the solos he made for them? No thanks, I love those solos and I know they're not technical, but it doesn't matter cause they're perfect the way they are. Kirk isn't a great guitarist, at least in terms of technical skill, but he has still made great solos.
